Finally getting around to announcing the names of our newest pigs. Please meet Anita and Jenny. They are named after two of the finest activists I know !! Anita started the Save Movement which is now a worldwide organization and has followed that up with The Plant Based Treaty. Encouraging citizens and cities worldwide to adopt policies that are better for the environment, healthier for humans and of course kinder to the animals. Jenny is a force of nature always at the forefront of actions to raise awareness about animal cruelty, from pig farming to fur farming. She has put herself at risk many times trying to expose the animal cruelty hidden behind the shed walls of factory farms. Both of these pigs have settled in well and are doing a great job advocating for their kind. They had been breeding pigs, a horrendous system of moving the mother pigs between gestation crates, while they are pregnant and farrowing crates for birthing and feeding their piglets for the short time they are together. Once their production declined they are sent to slaughter in the USA. A long trip with no food or water. We managed to rescue Anita and Jenny at the sorting facility. They have been part of some barn tours and have done a great job advocating for their kind :)

Last month we rescued two mother pigs. They had been in the factory farm system in Ontario and used for breeding. Pigs used for breeding are commonly administered PMSG to increase the number of babies they have. PMSG is derived from the blood of pregnant horses, the collection process is unregulated and abuse of the mares is rampant. Because breeding pigs reach maturity, the regular slaughterhouses cannot accommodate their size. These two mama pigs were being shipped for slaughter to the United States, we are not sure exactly where, but it can be as far away as Texas. They have no food or water on the trucks . They had spent their pregnancies and short time as mothers (7 to 20 days depending on the system the farmer uses) in crates so small that they could not turn around. They would have spend 2 to 3 years in these crates before being culled. I had to pick two ladies out of hundreds, it is so sad. Our lucky ladies are enjoying their new home and getting to meet Margaret and Justice. They need names. I look forward to your suggestions !!

Following on from the previous post, these are the horses that need names, they are all completely unhandled:
Pinto mare, she is very distrustful of humans. When we bid on her we didn't know that she had a foal that had gone to auction also, it was just good luck that of the hundreds of horses that were auctioned, we happened to bid on her foal as well
Bay filly with star, mom paint mare, she is sweet and curious about humans but also fearful
Black mare with crooked blaze, she is a big strong horse who is very fearful of humans
Chestnut gelding with star. The previous owner who took him to auction wrote 'Friendly. Meat horse' on his paperwork. He is quiet and wanting to engage with humans but unsure. I look forward to your suggestions :)

Last fall Meadowlarke rescued 9 horses at auction in Alberta. We found a home for one of them in Alberta so he stayed there. These horses were sold by the pound as they were destined for slaughter. Some of them had some training and even names, others are quite wild. In this post I will introduce the horses that have names, and the next post I will introduce those that need names.
Iris is a quiet black pony mare, she has had a foal and only knew how to lead, she has learnt how to lunge and had a saddle on for the first time last Friday.
Kita is the bay mare with star and snip. She is quite nervous but has been ridden before, she has calmed down a lot but is still a work in progress.
Princess is the bay mare with the blaze. She is very pushy, so we are working on her handling, she has been ridden and driven in the past but needs to relax and improve her manners, she has improved a lot but still needs work.
Chester, the chestnut with white markings on his neck. He arrived with severe eye injuries, the vet came up and he needed intensive treatment, he was on his way to a full recovery when very sadly he passed, we think from a heart attack, as it was very quick. We are very sorry about Chester. Rescuing animals can be rewarding but also heart wrenchingly sad. Rest in Peace Chester

Thank you everyone for your name suggestions. People taking the barn tours also gave their suggestions. The rooster is named in honour of Wayne Hsiung. He is an american lawyer and activist who spent time in prison for rescueing chickens from deplorable conditions on the factory farm. Betty is named in honour of Betty White who was a passionate animal advocate. Tabitha and Betty have been to the vet for lameness issues. This is common for these chickens that have been bred to grow unnaturally fast for profit.

A very big THANK YOU to Will at Good Will Good Karma for all his wonderful fundrasing. Will rode at Meadowlarke as a young boy, and enjoyed a special relationship with Big Red. That year Will started his rescue and fundraising. He very kindly included us as one of the receipents of his fund raising drive. The funds will go towards recent vet bills with one of our rescue turkeys who has an injured eye, and also Destiny who had to go to Ontario Veterinary College to be treated for colic. Its just amazing what can be done with kindness, campassion and determination. Great job Will and everyone else who helped in this effort !!!

Hello Everyone, we have some new birds that need names ! The turkeys and chickens were raised for people to eat, so they are very lucky to be still alive. Chickens raised for meat are killed at 6 weeks old and turkeys at 4 to 6 months, depending on the demand for different size turkeys. Four are hens and one is a rooster. We hope he grows up to be as wonderful as Russell was.
