Today, as we celebrate the beauty and wonder of our planet, we’re reminded of our commitment to being stewards of the environment and caring for all its creatures, great and small!

At Park Animal Hospital, we believe in not only caring for the health and well-being of our furry friends but also in preserving the planet they call home. Here are a few ways we’re staying green:

🌿 Eco-Friendly Practices: From energy-efficient lighting to digital medical records, we’re reducing our carbon pawprint wherever we can.

🌱 Sustainable Products: We choose environmentally friendly products and supplies whenever possible, because a healthy planet means healthier pets.

🌳 Community Outreach: We’re passionate about educating our community on responsible pet ownership and environmental conservation, because we know that together, we can make a difference.

🌎 Every Small Act Counts: Whether it’s recycling, reducing waste, or opting for greener transportation, we believe that every small action adds up to big change.

We would love to have you join us for the world premiere of The Paw Project’s film, “American Cats: The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly” at Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto on April 28 (11:30a), with a second screening on April 29 (8:30p).

The Paw Project is an organization based out of California that has been working hard to end declawing across North America for the last couple of decades, and our very own Dr. Fenger is the Ontario director 😻

Let’s fill the theatres to show law makers that Ontarians LOVE cats and want to end declawing here too (the last province in Canada that still has not banned it)! 🎬🍿

🐶 Some puppies have stubborn teeth that don’t want to leave on their own and may require extraction. Deciduous teeth - found in puppies - are long and thin which make them subject to breaking. This can cause painful exposure of the pulp and the best treatment is removal 🦷❌

Cute snoot but a big problem! Did you know that fractured teeth can be a serious concern for our four legged pals? Here’s why:

🦷 Pain - a fractured tooth can be very painful for your dog, just like it would for us humans.

🦷 Creates a gateway for bacteria to sneak into the gumline. This increases the risk of infection, which can lead to more significant health issues if left untreated.

🦷 Impact on eating habits - ever noticed your dog avoiding certain foods/treats or struggling to eat? A fractured tooth could be the culprit. They may even favour one side to chew on. Changes in eating habits might be a sign that your pup is experiencing dental discomfort.

Extracting fractured teeth is the most common and effective solution!

Did you know?💡
The most common disease in pets is periodontal disease. By the age of 3, up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal disease.

🦠🦷 Poor dental care affects more than just your pets mouth - bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and damage your pets vital organs. A proper dental care routine can add 3-5 years to your pets life!

Recently there has been a lot of talk about a potentially life-threatening respiratory disease affecting dogs. In the words of Dr Scott Weese, Professor and Chief of Infection Control at the Ontario Veterinary College, “Despite lots of media attention and associated fear, we’re still not sure what’s going on with all these coughing dogs, or even if there’s really a story at all. This could be something new, but more likely, it’s the usual suspects doing their usual thing (possibly at higher rates in some areas, as fairly commonly occurs periodically).” You can read the full article here https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/

What we recommend:
1. Prevent what you can - keep your dogs up to date on vaccines to reduce the risk of co-infections. Especially puppies, seniors, brachycephalics and anyone with a chronic respiratory disease or compromised immune system should have the “kennel cough” vaccine (ideally one that provides protection against both Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza virus). If you are one of our clients, you can check your pet’s vaccine status on our app which you can download by going to the front page of our website – scroll down and look for the cute little dog with a ball between his paws.

2. Avoid exposing your dog to sick dogs.

3. Avoid exposing your dog to dogs who have recently traveled outside of Southern Ontario.

4. Monitor for signs of illness (especially coughing and lethargy); if you notice any, book an appointment and keep them away from other dogs.

5. If you haven’t already, consider getting insurance BEFORE anything happens (pre-existing conditions are not covered). Best case scenario if your pet gets sick they will need an exam, chest x-rays and bloodwork; worst case, they will need to be admitted to a referral hospital for intensive care if they develop pneumonia.
