A hand-tamed pet rat makes a smart and friendly friend that likes to cuddle. They make a great companion for people of all ages, including respectful kids. They are playful animals that desire human companionship, as well as to socialize with other rats.
A powder-coated wire cage with a solid floor base makes an ideal home for your pet rat. It will allow good air circulation but still be comfortable on the rats' feet. The minimum cage size should be 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet per rat, but bigger is always better. Because rats like to climb, a multilevel cage gives them both exercise and enrichment.
Within the enclosure, provide toys—especially chew toys as rat’s teeth grow continuously. Also, add a nest box.
Which toys does your rat enjoy playing with?

Some people might think bunnies make boring pets, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Rabbits love to play with people they trust, however, it’s important to have a basic understanding of how rabbits think and play. Since rabbits are prey animals, they have very different mannerisms than cats or dogs, whose play activities often come from their hunting instincts.
Always make sure you respect your rabbit and their personal boundaries and remember that not all rabbits will like every game you start playing. Try out some different ones as well as some different ways of interacting with your rabbit to see which ones they like best.
Again, a rabbit is a prey animal, so standing above them creates anxiety. Get down on the ground with them to play. They are generally more likely to want to play during dusk and dawn as those are their most active times.
Some games your bunny might like: Reverse fetch – Rabbits love to pick up objects and toss them away. You retrieve the object and let them launch it again! Tug of war- very gently try to take away their chewy toy and watch them pull back! Create an obstacle course for them to hop over and crawl under. Enjoy watching them explore the area you’ve made just for them!
Your bunny may not want to play immediately, so keep in mind that the more you interact with your rabbit, the more they’ll trust you and be willing to play more. You’ll get the best results if you can make playtime part of your rabbit’s daily routine, so set a time and stick to it.
Which toys and games does your rabbit enjoy?

It is important not to skip your dog’s grooming appointments in the winter months. Owners often, mistakenly, based on good intentions, think they should allow their dog’s coat to grow during the winter to give them some extra warmth. In actuality, regular grooming habits are important all year long.
If your dog goes without professional grooming in the winter, you risk that fur becoming matted. What an owner may think is adding extra cold-weather protection will actually be doing just the polar – pardon the pun-opposite. Fur that’s matted doesn’t insulate; it traps cold water and ice. So, instead, it provides discomfort, pain, and often leads to hot spots. Matting can also lead to infections under the skin -translation: expensive vet bills.
So, keep your grooming appointments throughout the winter to keep your pal healthy and happy!

Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is happening in Manhattan starting this weekend! The performance (Agility, Obedience) events on Saturday will be followed by the famous dog show on Monday and Tuesday.
While Westminster is an American dog show, Canadian dogs rock the Garden each and every year. A Canadian dog has won Best in Show at Westminster 6 times!
Most recently, it was the adorable Miss P in 2015! GCH. Tashtins Lookin For Trouble made history as the 6th Canadian Dog to win Westminster! Miss P was owned by Eddie Dziuk, Lori Crandlemire and Kaitlyn Crandlemire. She was handled by Will Alexander.
The Canadian Pet Expo wishes all Canadian dogs headed to NYC the best of luck!

If you’re bringing home a cat from a shelter, here are some pointers for the first few days: Before you bring home a new cat, be sure you have chosen a room for them to decompress and feel safe in. If you give them a quiet, calm area to explore without other pets or a lot of noise and people, they will have time to adjust to their new surroundings. Prepare the room in advance with food, water, a bed, a litter pan or box, a scratching post and some cat safe toys. When you bring your cat home, put their carrier down in their room and open the door. Let them come out on their own. Patience is key! If possible, make an effort to keep things as familiar as possible at the start so the transition will be as easier on the cat. Provide the same food, litter and possibly a toy or blanket they enjoyed in the shelter. The cat is likely a bit stressed and shy from the moving experience. They may hide for the first few days. This is common. Don’t let it hurt your feelings and please avoid dragging them out to socialize. Let them come to you when they are ready. You can encourage them to do so with treats and toys, but do not force them. Sometimes, quietly reading in a chair or the floor will motivate them to come over to you.
Do you have experience in bringing home cats from a shelter or humane society? We would love your tips! Share them in the comments below!

A simple, but important winter safety tip is to always keep your dog leashed near icy ponds to avoid a horrible situation. Even if frozen, ponds are likely to have weak areas unable to support your dog’s weight. It’s simply not worth the risk.

Bettas are native to Southeast Asia and are popular pets with a big misconception – that they should be kept in a small fish bowl! While, in the wild, the betta lives in shallow streams, rice paddies, and puddles, many of these areas are still quite expansive in water volume. Your betta needs room to both move around as well as places to hide. When it comes to tanks, the absolute minimum size for a healthy betta would be 2.5 gallons with the recommended size being 5 gallons or more. Please keep in mind that larger tanks are easier to maintain nitrogen cycles and temperature and require less frequent cleanings. Don’t fill the tank right to the top as betta fish need access to the water’s surface to gulp air using their unique labyrinth organ. The labyrinth organ allows them to extract oxygen from the air and not just the water via their gills. Make sure your tank has a lid as bettas are known jumpers! Show us your betta set up and tell us about some of the products your fish loves!

"Catio" cat enclosures continue to grow in popularity as many owners see them as a safe solution for allowing indoor cats the opportunity to explore the sights, sounds and smells of the great outdoors without any of the dangers associated with it.
Catios range in size. They can be as small and simple as a balcony enclosure, or as elaborate as a huge backyard outdoor cat playpen.
Do your felines have a catio? Did you make it yourself? Or buy one pre-made? Any brands you would recommend to other cat owners?
