Sunny with a chance of ticks?

With temperature fluctuations at this time of year,
checking your weather forecast helps you decide if you
need sunglasses, snow boots, or a sweater! But what
about ticks – could ticks be active in your area today? Visit
www.tickmaps.ca to get a 2-week ‘tick risk forecast’ or check
what days in the last 12 months had potential tick activity.
Regardless of the time of year it is important to remain
vigilant and recognize that ticks may still pose a risk to pets
and people.

Today is the first day of National Tick Awareness Month.

Though it is still winter, ticks can pose a risk to pets (and
their people!).

Ticks can be active even when there is still snow on the ground - and the risk in Canada continues to increase.

Fear not! You can take action! Over the month we will be walking you through the three layers of tick protection to help keep ticks out and your furry friends safe!

Congratulations to Dr. Alison Smith who recently received a Masters degree in Advanced Clinical Practice from the University of Edinburgh.

To obtain this degree graduate veterinarians study topics in greater depth than they did when in veterinary school. Alison concentrated on small animals doing courses in areas such as neurology, anaesthesia, feline medicine, and pain with an emphasis on pain management in both dogs and cats. She has been working on this degree for four years while working full time at South Peel.

She has found that this new knowledge has been valuable in treating more complex cases that she often sees at South Peel. She feels that the added knowledge gained during her degree programme will greatly benefit South Peel clients and their pets.

🦷 Approximately 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of 3 have active dental disease which is why oral hygiene is so important for our fur-babies!

Here is a great before and after photo of our latest dental patient Tucker!

This week .the.golden.goof came in for a routine dental cleaning. Despite their best efforts, his pet parents have a tough time reaching the back molars in his mouth. RVT Julia did a wonderful job scaling and polishing his teeth! Now Tucker has fresher breath, and his parents can maintain his oral health with daily brushing and dental kibble!

The very adorable Ocean met Dr.Williams today for her first kitten check up and vaccines! 🐾

She was a super patient and also had a kitten Mani Pedi while purring up a storm in Joanne’s arms (one of our awesome Animal Care Attendants).

We are so happy to be part of your journey Ocean, and can’t wait to see you at your next visit!

Heat stroke is something that we commonly see in pets over the summer months.

The best way to prevent heat stroke in your pets is by allowing them access to areas where they can cool off, giving them breaks from the heat, and keeping them inside on very hot days.

If you are concerned that your pet is experiencing heat stroke DO NOT place them into a cold water/ice bath as this rapid cooling can actually trap heat within the body putting your pet at greater risk of severe complications. Instead, call us or a local clinic in your area immediately for further instructions.

We are one day closer to the weekend!

Just a friendly reminder that if you plan to bring your pet swimming this weekend please ensure they are supervised. We recommend life vests for all pets near water, as even the strongest swimmers can become fatigued and struggle to stay afloat. Feel free to share this post on your page to spread awareness about the value of life vests for our four-legged swimmers!

Spring is here and so is parasite season! To keep your pets safe, make an appointment to talk to your veterinarian about parasite prevention, including options to help protect your pet from heartworm, fleas and ticks.

Will you be hiding treats around your house this weekend? Make sure to place your hidden treasures in areas your pets can't reach. Small items can be choking hazards for pets, and sweet treats such as chocolates and candies containing xylitol can be toxic if ingested.
