Did you know that the Veterinary Oral Health Council provides a full list of all products that have been clinically tested to be both safe and effective at removing plaque or preventing dental disease?
Any products listed with a VOHC approved sticker is a great recommendation 🦷🪥

We figured it was time to introduce two of our newest team members:

(Left) Dr. Myles
(Right) Alysa, RVT

Both Dr Myles and RVT Alysa graduated this year and were quick learners at our clinic. We are super proud of their accomplishments and eager to see where this next year takes them!!

🐾 Please take a moment to help us welcome them to the team and read their bios in the captions below. ❤️

Here at Maritime Animal Hospital we are very lucky on accident, that many of our staff members enjoy similar activities.
Some of those hobbies or activities being reading and hiking!
So much so, our staff has a “book borrow” where we exchange books for lunchtime reading and a little hiking club.

Recently, some of our doctors and technicians got together on two different weekends to hike the Dobson Trail. And of course, they brought their dogs along.

Below is some wholesome footage of their travels.

We want to know some of your favourite hiking spots, dog friendly activities and book recommendations are. Comment below!

With the scorching hot weather and heat warning in affect we thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone of the dangers of heat stroke in your animals ‼️☀️

Just like in people, animals can get heat exhaustion that may develop into heat stroke. If overheating occurs, it is best to act quickly and gradually bring down their core body temperature.

-Bring indoors to a cool area or air conditioned building
-offer a drink of cool (not cold) water. We do not want the animal to go into shock from extreme temperature changes.
-Offer shade
-Apply cool, damp towels behind the neck or groin area

Unable to cool themselves off with their limited sweat glands in comparison to people, they are at higher risk for developing heatstroke.

Symptoms of heatstroke may resemble:
-Excessive panting
-excessive drooling
-difficulty breathing
-vomiting
-seizure activity
-weakness or stumbling
-collapse

Note that heatstroke is considered an *emergency* & you should call your veterinarian or seek emergency medical care immediately if any symptoms occur.

Be sun smart and pro active. Exercise at early mornings and late evenings when temperatures and humidity are at their lowest.

The other week we had a canine patient come in with a primary concern of limping on the left front leg and restlessness. He presented extremely painful and non weight bearing, he was also uninterested in eating his regular diet. It was very clear that something was off.
Dr Gaunce initiated an intramuscular injection of a strong pain control prior to the physical exam to help keep the dog comfortable.
Beginning diagnostics were a radiograph which showed no abnormalities. After further discussion, it was also noted a tick was pulled off of the patient roughly 3 months prior.

With permission of the owner, we ran what is called a “4Dx Snap Test” from one of our reference laboratories called, IDEXX. This test required only 3 drops of blood and can be interpreted in only 8 minutes! 🩸
While our laboratory has various types of snap tests, this one specifically tests for vector- borne diseases.

After the results were ready, the test clearly indicated a positive result for Lyme Disease- a tick borne disease carried by the ‘Black Legged Tick’ / ‘Deer Tick’ / Ixodes Scapularis.
This disease can affect both animals AND people. The Black Legged tick is the most common tick found in New Brunswick and can be a small as a poppy seed! 🔎

The patient went home on a variety of medications- most importantly, antibiotics. As well as an extensive conversation about a follow up with a test known as, Quant C6 and some parasite prevention.
A little less than a week later and our hospital is thrilled to hear the patient is already doing so much better!

This case serves as a fantastic reminder to check both your pets (dogs and cats alike) and yourselves for ticks. A variety of ticks are common in our location and can easily spread diseases like Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and many more depending on geographical location. Ticks are also active above 4 degrees, which can easily happen even during winter months.

While a Lyme vaccine is a great option to include in your annual vaccine scheduled for your pets, it does not protect against all strands of Lyme Disease or other tick borne diseases (as mentioned above). Your best bet is to keep your animals on a monthly parasite prevention to help deter ticks from engorging and limit any contact time required to pass along disease or illness.

Check behind ears, armpits, between toes, hair and other areas. Remain on cleared pathways and avoid tall grasses or leaf litter.

A common misconception we’ve been hearing as of late is that “it’s tick season”

Reality is, any season can be tick season as long as it’s 4 °C out. With the weather remaining more consistent in temperatures suitable for ticks, it’s a great reminder to refill your preventatives.
Below is an image of an engorged (blood fed) black-legged tick. This is one of the most common types of ticks in New Brunswick and a carrier for Lyme disease.

Protect your pets and protect yourself by staying up to date on prescribed preventatives and checking yourself after spending time outdoors.

Last week one of our technicians found what’s known as a sucking louse from a canine skin sample.

It was determined to be what’s known as a case of “Sucking Lice”- identified through its smaller head in comparison to its wider thorax/body. (Pictured on the right of second photo)

Other types of lice such as “Chewing lice” (Pictured on the left of second photo) are much wider in head and body.

Both types of lice can cause a bad case of the itchies!
Good news is, after a few rounds of topical prescribed treatments, cases can resolve.

Fun fact: Lice are actually species specific.
For example, you cannot be affected by your dogs lice, nor can your cat and vise versa.

Reminder about our upcoming holiday hours ~

We will be closed this upcoming Monday, December 25th for Christmas, Tuesday December 26th for Boxing Day and January 1st for New Years Day.
We are closed on the weekend as normal.

Should you need to scoop up some more pet food, waiting prescriptions, test results, etc prior to the holiday closures, please phone us to coordinate a pickup time and to discuss what you and your pet may need.

As always, we thank our incredible clients for the several delicious treats we’ve been receiving, your kindness and most importantly- your patience during this busy season. We strive to provide exceptional care for each of our patients and appreciate the clients who respect the dedicated time it takes to carefully juggle surgeries, out patient appointments prescriptions and more.

We understand that this is often a very cheery time for most, and while we are just as excited, we understand for many it can be just as equally a difficult time. To any individual or family and our neighbouring veterinary clinics struggling this holiday season, please know you are not alone. You are appreciated, valued and loved.
It can be hard to give compassion when you give so often or wind up in ‘busy mode’, but it is important to note a little bit of kindness can go a long way for some.

Wishing you all a very happy (early) Holidays and New Year!🎄❄️❤️

Thank you Cynthia at Pawsio for the sweetest box of chocolates🎄🐾

Cynthia Babineau runs a Canine Rehabilitation Clinic to aid dogs on their healing journey often pre or post surgeries, with mobility issues and much more. It’s been awesome to refer our clients in her direction for some added care and dedication- because sometimes dogs need physio too!
She also recently received her diploma and noted that clients using Trupanion pet insurance are now able to use their coverage. 🙂

This week at Maritime Animal Hospital we are celebrating our CSR’s, VA’s and DVM’s. Join us in taking a moment to thank and appreciate these incredible individuals who play such pivotal roles in the lives of many pets.

To our Customer Service team- Thank you for being the first friendly face clients encounter. Your patience, empathy and dedication to ensuring excellent client care and communication are commendable. You handle various situations and inquiries in such calm manner and help navigate any challenges or concerns that may arise. Your genuine care is unmatched.

To our Veterinary Assistants- You guys are truly skillful heroes. The care and compassion you take to ease stress for both clients and their pets does not go unnoticed. You have an extraordinary way with words and comfort even when helping technicians or doctors to restrain in difficult situations. You know the tools the team needs before we vocalize it, and take immediate action to help, scrub in, keep organized and the workflow smooth.

Last but not least, to our Veterinarians- Your expertise, endless knowledge and profound dedication to the welfare of animals is inspiring. We know you work tirelessly, often dedicate time after regular work hours to complete what clients need for their pet and have to make critical and often difficult decisions. This field may not always be easy in many ways, often emotionally, but you provide your best selves nonetheless. You are superheroes in white coats and we are forever grateful and in awe of your hard work and selflessness.

Thank you team, for your unwavering commitment, even during the toughest moments! This week is to represent our gratitude for all that you do… starting with a yogurt bar!

Shoutout to Susan, Jocelyn, Kailey, Kira, Shelley, Miranda, Cecelia, Darlene, Lisa, Dr Vessey, Dr Gaunce, Dr Papic, Dr Machum and Dr Sterritt.

On this day we take a moment to reflect and most importantly, remember. Lest We Forget the brave and fallen who sacrificed so we may live in freedom.
Whether you are attending a service today in respect for our veterans, or staying in, we hope you find a moment to honour and to thank, those who served and continue to do so.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”
