Your walk should be a balance of work and freedom, play and rest. Couple big Nonos are as follows:

- Sniffing: Let your dog sniff! But only on your terms. Pulling (if it's excessive) = loss of freedom

- Beginning of walk: don't start your walk until your dog is neutral. Don't hype them up by yelling "Walkies!" Before every walk

- Food: Food reinforces behaviour. Behaviour does not happen because we present the food. Learn the difference.

- Focus on your dog: This is the time of day where you get to bond with your dog. Save the scrolling for later.

All training sessions, especially outdoors, should start with a warm-up like this. Once you get into the bulk of your training, you should on top of your warmup start with some easy reps to give your dogs easy wins, before getting into the challenging stuff.

Why Reward Placement Matters in Dog Training 🐾

You might be doing everything else right, but if your reward placement is off, it could be slowing down your dog’s progress—or worse, teaching the wrong behavior entirely!

Next time you're in a training session, ask yourself: “Where am I delivering the reward, and what is it teaching my dog in the long term?” Proper reward placement is crucial for reinforcing the right behavior and building a solid foundation for obedience and focus.

🎯 Challenge: Pay close attention to where you’re delivering the reinforcement and how it affects your dog’s behavior. Small changes in reward placement can lead to BIG improvements!

If you’re wondering how to properly reward your dog during training, you’re not alone. In this video, we highlight three common mistakes people make when reinforcing their dogs, and show you the correct approach for creating a well-behaved and engaged dog.

❌ Top Left Corner: Shoving food in your dog's face won’t help, especially in stressful situations. It can overwhelm your dog and reduce the effectiveness of the reward.

❌ Top Right Corner: While this is close to being correct, notice the poor reward placement. Feeding your dog where they are sitting rather than encouraging them to come toward you creates confusion and less engagement.

❌ Bottom Left Corner: Stop relying on luring to prompt the behavior you want. Luring is only useful when teaching new skills—not as a way to reinforce learned behaviors.

✅ Correct Method (Bottom Right Corner): Mark the behavior, drop your shoulders, and use an animated backpedal to create excitement. Your dog should want to funnel into you, and the "bubble" around you should become the place they naturally want to be.

Learn how proper reward placement and engagement techniques can transform your dog’s behavior and enhance their training!

Is Your Dog Not Listening? Here's Why – Southwest Dog Training Tips

Your dog isn’t disobedient! Before assuming they can’t listen or focus, there are 4 key reasons why your dog might seem untrainable. At Southwest Dog Training, we believe that understanding these underlying causes is essential to improving your dog’s behavior and focus.

Here’s what could be affecting your dog’s ability to listen:

1️⃣ Distractions: High-stimulus environments can overwhelm your dog’s ability to focus.
2️⃣ Overstimulation: Too much excitement or energy can make it hard for your dog to settle down and follow commands.
3️⃣ Lack of Clear Communication: Your dog may not understand what you’re asking if the cues aren’t clear.
4️⃣ Inconsistent Training: Inconsistency in training can confuse your dog and hinder their progress.

Want to help your dog push through these challenges and improve their focus? Southwest Dog Training is here to help you transform your dog's behavior, ensuring they stay engaged and attentive during training.

Building a drive for play is one of the best things you can do for your dog and your relationship.

Start with 2-3 high intensity play sessions a day indoors when your dog is awake and ready to go. Use a special that is otherwise hidden outside of these play sessions.

Over time, this toy will signal to your dog its go time, and your play sessions will get more fun as a result.

Work with your dog, not against them.

If they feel like they need to pull you to go sniff and explore, they will. And everytime they do, they get reinforced via access to the sniffing, and this will compound into consistent pulling at all times.

Instead, show them that you hold the key to all the freedom they want on a walk, and the price is the small fee of a little engagement and waiting for our release word.

One of the main criteria for a heel, when dog training is focus and engagement. This drill is a very easy way to introduce that.

10/05/2024

❌ Upper left: you shouldn't need a physical barrier to keep your dog from running in the street. What happens if that barrier isn't there

❌Upper right: No control whatsoever, dog gets whatever he wants = recipe for disaster.

❌Bottom left: this is the best of the 3 wrong boxes but needs improvement. Relying too much on a verbal cue will only get you so far. If the door is open by accident, nothing will stop your dog from running outside.

✅Bottom right: Your dog should know they're not allowed out the door until they hear your release word.

Your guest is not going to stop them from jumping on them. The first rule when it comes to fixing your dog jumping. Before getting into any detail and complex drills, is to keep your dog from practicing the behaviour in the first place.

If you want your dog to blindly follow you on Walks, this game which applies a dog training theory known as the Premack Principal is a great place to start. It will teach your dog that following you will result in the best reward.

If you are looking at getting into a beginner heel, here are two simple ways to introduce it. Heel is a complex skill that can take hours to master, but for the purposes of getting your dog next to you and engaged while walking, these simple tricks are a great start to that process!

We underestimate how detrimental giving our dogs instant affection and attention when they claim our space can be, especially when they are young. Two things need to be understood at a young age.

1. You can only enter my space when you are invited, often via release word (Break, free, or okay).

2. You will not always get instant attention and affection when you ask for it.

These two simple rules can prevent so many behavioral issues, including resource guarding, demand barking, and more.
