Simple Rule: Your dog is allowed on the bed if they can handle not being on the bed!
DISCLAIMER - important variables for this to work.
1. The drive for the food needs to be stronger than the feeling of fear or anxiety, or else you either wonât accomplish anything, or youâll actually diminish the value of the reinforcer. This brings me to point 2.
2. Your dog must be below threshold for this drill to work.

Tips for a Horrible Walk.mp4
Your walk should be a balance of work and freedom, play and rest. Couple big Nonos are as follows:
- Sniffing: Let your dog sniff! But only on your terms. Pulling (if it's excessive) = loss of freedom
- Beginning of walk: don't start your walk until your dog is neutral. Don't hype them up by yelling "Walkies!" Before every walk
- Food: Food reinforces behaviour. Behaviour does not happen because we present the food. Learn the difference.
- Focus on your dog: This is the time of day where you get to bond with your dog. Save the scrolling for later.

Reward Placement - Southwest Dog Training.mp4
Why Reward Placement Matters in Dog Training đž
You might be doing everything else right, but if your reward placement is off, it could be slowing down your dogâs progressâor worse, teaching the wrong behavior entirely!
Next time you're in a training session, ask yourself: âWhere am I delivering the reward, and what is it teaching my dog in the long term?â Proper reward placement is crucial for reinforcing the right behavior and building a solid foundation for obedience and focus.
đŻ Challenge: Pay close attention to where youâre delivering the reinforcement and how it affects your dogâs behavior. Small changes in reward placement can lead to BIG improvements!

How do you reward your Dog - Southwest Dog Training.mp4
If youâre wondering how to properly reward your dog during training, youâre not alone. In this video, we highlight three common mistakes people make when reinforcing their dogs, and show you the correct approach for creating a well-behaved and engaged dog.
â Top Left Corner: Shoving food in your dog's face wonât help, especially in stressful situations. It can overwhelm your dog and reduce the effectiveness of the reward.
â Top Right Corner: While this is close to being correct, notice the poor reward placement. Feeding your dog where they are sitting rather than encouraging them to come toward you creates confusion and less engagement.
â Bottom Left Corner: Stop relying on luring to prompt the behavior you want. Luring is only useful when teaching new skillsânot as a way to reinforce learned behaviors.
â
Correct Method (Bottom Right Corner): Mark the behavior, drop your shoulders, and use an animated backpedal to create excitement. Your dog should want to funnel into you, and the "bubble" around you should become the place they naturally want to be.
Learn how proper reward placement and engagement techniques can transform your dogâs behavior and enhance their training!
