At this time of year Sauvetage Lapins Errants is extremely busy rescuing domestic pet rabbits that have been dumped outdoors. Just in the last 2 weeks they have saved over 10 bunnies from imminent death prior to our harsh winters. There are many more waiting to be rescued, but the shelters are overflowing.

This handsome little bunny was rescued last night and is now spending a few days in my home before making his way to Adoption Lapins Sans Abri where he will be looking for a forever home.

Giving back to the community is very important to me. I act as a volunteer emergency foster home for Sauvetage Lapins Errants

Last night Sauvetage Lapins Errants rescued this handsome guy from almost 2 years on the streets in Rivière des Prairies. His bonded mate died recently from a fox attack.

He is now safe and sound at my home and will stay here during his quarantine period before moving to his permanent foster home.

Ticks are on the rise in southern Quebec. If your pet goes outside, it is good practice to check them for ticks daily. Ticks are not just found in rural areas, they are present in urban areas as well.

During my many years, working in the veterinary field, citizens would bring in lost pets in hopes of finding their family. More often than not, if the pet had a microchip, the contact information would be outdated and we would have no way of contacting the owner.

There are many pet registries to choose from, but the most fool proof way is to register directly with the manufacturer of the microchip. When your pet is scanned at the shelter or veterinary hospital the manufacturer and unique identification number is displayed and it is the manufacturer we call will call to retrieve your information. Often, it is free to update your phone number or email address once registered.

Ferrets make amazing pets! They are highly intelligent, social, and playful. They are quiet creatures and can be litter box trained.

Don’t be fooled by their small size, they are just like our pet dogs and cats in that they need neutering, vaccinating, flea preventative, and microchipping. They require a large enclosure, but also need lots of supervised time out of their cage to explore in a safe space everyday. While they love the company of humans, they do best in a multi-ferret household.

When your pet is feeling ill, you may wonder how serious their symptoms may be and how soon they should be seen by a veterinarian. There can be overlap when deciding between urgent care or a trip to the emergency room.

It is alway best to call your veterinarian and talk to a veterinary technician to decide how serious your pets' symptoms are.

For emergencies that occur after hours or when your regular vet does not have availability, Centre Vétérinaire Laval sees exotic pets as well as dogs and cats.

Enrichment is an important element to our pets overall well-being. Toys can get expensive and pets can soon lose interest in a new item. DIY enrichment toys are close to free!

I made these two toys with birds in mind, but the star balloon can also be used for cats, rabbits, and more, just modify the type of treat placed inside. Kitties may also simply enjoy playing with the toy without a treat inside.

**Disclaimer - if your pet has a habit of ingesting paper, these toys are NOT a good option. It is okay to eat in very small amounts, but large amounts can cause health issues.

It’s rescue a rabbit month!

Did you know domestic rabbits have been selectively bred for centuries to live alongside humans? They have lost much of their ability to survive on their own, especially in the harsh winters of Quebec.

Sadly, sometimes people who no longer wish to care for and keep their pet rabbit will release them outside. They will NOT survive and are destined for a short and miserable existence.

Rescuing a rabbit can also mean educating people on responsible rehoming, fostering for a rescue, donating to a reputable organization, or reporting a stray domestic bunny.

Please contact Sauvetage Lapins Errants, an organization that rescues these abandoned bunnies. They are always in need of supplies, volunteers, and donations. If you are unsure whether the rabbit you are seeing is domestic or wild, take a clear photo and contact them as they are educated in recognizing the differences.

It’s rescue a rabbit month!

Did you know rabbits make amazing pets?

They can free roam around your home and use the litter box. They have amazing personalities and are clean creatures.

Educate yourself before adopting. Bunnies take just as much work as a cat or dog, if not more.

They need access to a veterinarian who specializes in bunny medicine, they must be spayed/neutered, and in some areas of the country, they need vaccination. If you plan to travel, finding a pet sitter that is knowledgeable about rabbit behavior and health is essential.

Be a life saver and adopt or foster from a reputable rescue such as SPCA de Montréal or Betty's Rescues

During our cold winter months, animals will seek out a warm shelter to survive.❄️

A cat that is outdoors may crawl up under your car and find warmth by the engine. The cat can get severely injured by the fan when the car starts up.

Bang on the hood of your car or open the hood to startle any animal that may be sleeping in there before starting your car.
