Our first season in BC was a real success thanks to our amazing team of farmers out there! By implementing our services in this city, we made a significant contribution to feed the growing reality of urban agriculture proactively redefining the agronomic possibilities of the metropolis. Vancouver is actively looking for a better understanding of urban farming as they rethink zoning restrictions and create licensing that recognize urban agriculture as a business. In a society so heavily reliant on industrialized agriculture to nourish us, Vancouver is a great city to cultivate change especially considering the area has the best climate for producing food in Canada.

MicroHabitat is contributing to solving one of the hardest problems in cities today, food deserts. Most people don't realize that a food desert is actually defined as a place where a substantial number of residents must travel more than one mile to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
There are many cities in North America where neighborhoods have no grocery stores within a half-mile radius. This can cause residents to either drive long distances and spend more on food transportation or worse. Residents have to make choices between buying food and paying for other necessities such as gas, insurance, rent, or mortgages.

We are striving to be pioneers in the local urban farming community by educating citizens on how they can grow and cultivate their own food right in the city, with minimal effort and specialized knowledge.
The presence of urban farming is a vibrant sign that the local economy is growing and profiting, it creates new opportunities for people and communities to work together in harmony.

Wondering if urban farming could reduce a city’s carbon footprint?
Urban agriculture assists in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions not only by producing food but also by reducing the amount of food transported from farming areas and thus reducing food miles.
This reduction in food transportation has a huge impact and residual effects on many aspects: economy, air pollution and quality, infrastructure.
Urban agriculture enables us not only to supply food, but also minimize collateral effects on the environment as it produces local food destined directly to consumers.
When implementing rooftop urban farms, one possible effect is also a decrease in energy use for air conditioning and heating because of the greening of a portion of the building. It is also the cultivation of social, emotional and community well-being through urban agricultural activities.

Last Sunday was #internationaldayforbiologicaldiversity. The aim of this day is to bring awareness surrounding biodiversity issues and the variety of life on Earth. The theme this year is “Building a shared future for all life” 🌱
Why is it important? Biological diversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better and urban farming ensures a thriving biological diversity 🌎

Quartier Dix30 x Microhabitat
"What is doing an urban farm in a shopping center?" you might ask...
The little shopping town #QuartierDix30, managed by Oxford Properties Group, offers a lively shopping experience to its visitors through an extensive diversity of stores, restaurants and entertainment.
However, the Dix30 center has raised the bar higher, by proposing to its visitors a unique possibility : to connect with nature. Indeed the center's urban farm provides a grounded space for visitors to observe vegetable's growth, become aware of environmental issues, get healthy lifestyle inspiration and much more. All the harvesting is donated to Banque Alimentaire Césumas Longueuil.
" This vegetable garden offers all our visitors and employees the chance to live a concrete experience and connect with nature by being a spectator of the growing evolution of the plantations." - Melissa Houle, Senior Property Manager

1666...is the number of breakfasts that MicroHabitat was proud to donate to Breakfast Club of Canada / Club des petits déjeuners to nurture the potential of our children.
Do you want to help end food insecurity too? Visit the Nutritious Breakfasts program at www.breakfastclubcanada.org for more information.
Let's act together to ensure healthy nutrition for the next generation, one donation at a time!
Because our mission is also to help alleviate food insecurity, we are proud to be collaborating with The Stop Community Food Centre to provide nutritious meals to low-income Torontonians. ✨
For over 35 years, The Stop has been working to “use good food to bring people together”, but their engagement goes even further. They advocate for better social assistance and fight to reduce the increasing wealth gap between communities.
Govan Brown and GWL Realty Advisors' urban farms are both helping to make a difference by supplying their meal program !
Together, let's cultivate change 💚
August month is full of surprises ! ✨Tomatoes and carrots made their apparition, and Camden production team visited us on Govan Brown rooftop farm to film the production zone…
Exciting things are coming up, involving an amazing collaboration with BOMA Canada.
Stay tuned !
