MicroHabitat propose aujourd’hui ses services d’agriculture urbaine à de grandes entreprises, des établissements culinaires réputés, des écoles et d’autres organisations dans la région du Grand Montréal. L’éveil du développement durable qui pousse les organisations à adopter de nouvelles pratiques afin d’engendrer un impact positif sur la communauté, et la volonté des citoyens de vivre dans un milieu urbain plus sain entraînent une demande pour ce type de services. Nous vous proposons de revenir sur notre aventure dans ce court article.
La philosophie derrière l’entreprise
MicroHabitat est née dans l’esprit d’Alexandre Ferrari-Roy il y a plusieurs années. Diplômé de McGill en Sciences de l’agriculture et de l’environnement, Alexandre souhaitait développer des projets d’agriculture urbaine pour des entreprises, restaurants et particuliers dans des espaces inutilisés afin d’obtenir une production ultra-locale de fruits, légumes, fines herbes et fleurs comestibles écologique. La philosophie derrière cette idée était de réduire la pollution provenant du transport (le secteur du transport étant le plus gros pollueur au Canada) des aliments, de rendre un espace inutilisé productif et finalement d’avoir un impact positif sur la communauté urbaine, par les bienfaits du jardin sur l’environnement mais également par l’apport d’aliments frais de qualité pour les personnes ciblées.
Une gamme de services en agriculture urbaine
Orlane Panet a depuis rejoint l’équipe et a permis à l’entreprise de se développer dans le milieu des affaires. La formule reste la même, avec l’ajout des services supplémentaires, à destination des entreprises et institutions. En effet, MicroHabitat propose désormais en complément des jardins écologiques sur toit, terrasse ou au sol, la plantation et l’entretien de forêts nourricières, vergers ou simplement arbres, arbustes fruitiers ou vignes pour compléter son offre de fruits à cultiver. Des ateliers éducatifs sont désormais proposés aux entreprises souhaitant diversifier leurs actions envers leurs employés, et aux écoles pour initier les jeunes au jardinage et favoriser leur éveil écologique. Finalement, une boutique en ligne vous permet d’acheter le même matériel que nous utilisons dans nos jardins, à savoir pots, terreau, compost, engrais naturel, système d’irrigation, etc, pour diffuser le mouvement d’agriculture urbaine auprès des citoyens.
Des projets à valeur ajoutée
Depuis plusieurs années maintenant, nos jardins urbains produisent des récoltes à destination des cuisines de nos clients, ou des organismes à but non lucratifs de leur choix. En effet, nous cherchons à créer un maillage avec la communauté à l’aide de partenariats entre le secteur public et le privé. Nous sommes d’ailleurs partenaires du Plan de développement durable 2016-2020 de la Ville de Montréal, et investis dans l’initiative « Adoptez une école ». Finalement, nous avons rejoint le Club des petits déjeuners, ce qui nous permet d’offrir un repas à un enfant dans le besoin, pour chaque pot acheté sur notre boutique.
En plus des retombées sociales qu’ont nos projets, nos jardins jouent un rôle important dans notre environnement. L’aspect de verdure est évidemment intéressant sur les membres de nos clients, au niveau du bien-être et de la concentration au travail, mais leurs avantages vont bien au-delà. En effet, nos jardins sur le toits et terrasses au centre-ville permettent de lutter contre les îlots de chaleur en milieu urbain, de réduire les flux d’eau suite aux pluies torrentielles et d’améliorer la biodiversité localement. Les fleurs comestibles et autres plantes soutiennent les pollinisateurs en leur offrant de la nourriture, et permettent à de nombreux autres insectes bénéfiques d’y trouver refuge. Tout cela crée un micro-écosystème qui va nous permettre de travailler avec la nature et de cultiver de manière 100% écologique, sans produits chimiques.
