Daisy is miniature poodle, about a year and a half old, and she was born blind.
Daisy's mom brought me in to help desensitize her for grooming, specifically, trimming her face.
Daisy's now able to have a full trim without snapping at the scissors in fear so we've moved on to other behaviors.
'Touch' is an excellent recall behavior as it's heavily reinforced with great rewards.
Teaching a dog who is missing one of it's senses means we need to rely on the others.
Notice how I wiggle my fingers when her nose leads her to my treat stash? I started with the wiggle and slowly faded it out so that she can search with her nose. I will still help her out when she needs it but our goal is for her to come searching for her mom when she hears the cue.
Training with distractions like this is great work for Daisy!
"Sit stay" for these good boiiis! I love that you can literally see them thinking 🤔🤔 it's not easy to train 2 dogs at the same time, great work @jadefawn_ 🥰
Oldie but a goodie! @gilcrocker and his bestie Loki working hard on loose leash without the use of fear, intimidation or pain. No corrections needed! These guys are the perfect example of how you can achieve good behaviors with force-free methods. I'm so proud of them 🥰
Theodore, looking fabulous while learning that dryers and brushing pays big time! #forcefreedogtraining #forcefreegrooming #morkie #dogmom #mtlmoments
@maisie_chen and her pup Chelsea showing off after our training sessions! This family is an amazing team and Chelsea is flourishing because of it. I'm so proud of all the work they put in over the weeks!!! They're now equipped with the appropriate tools to ensure that Chelsea reaches her full potential as a canine citizen. Bravo! 👏
But why is she so cute though?! 😍 @meet.maca @kgmtl she takes wet zoomies to another level 😂
Charlie is a schnauzer puppy that I've been training for the past 5 weeks. He's a fast learner and has been on my schedule since January 2020, his fabulous momma @georgiasalouros had been waiting for him to come into her life for a long time! Teaching puppies at an early age, what's to be expected of them, is the best prevention of unwanted behavior in the future. This was Charlie's first bath and dry with me and my professional equipment, as you can see, he's not afraid of the dryer and he's very interested in working for treats. Building trust through positive reinforcement training is a huge part in force-free grooming. The pups need to trust that you won't restrain them if they're uncomfortable, no leashes and no firm grip. You won't coerce them into a terrifying situation (because even if someone pays you a million dollars to walk through a room filled with spiders, you'll still be scared of spiders). They trust that you'll respect their boundaries and work on "dog time" and not focus on "getting the job done". Grooming doesn't need to be scary, training is fun and grooming should be too!
Force-free grooming is exactly what it means. To groom an animal with no restraints, no raised voices and no physical force. The pet industry, being unregulated as it is, allows for pet professionals to label themselves as whatever they want. A true force-free groomer will be happy for you to stay, will have a background in training to teach your pup to cooperate in their care, will use reward based training and will produce happy dogs at the end of every session! If the dogs are not willing, they are always welcome to demonstrate by leaving the grooming area. Henry here loves it so much, he demands we keep going! His parents put in the work and he's an excellent canine citizen, even for his groomer! @henrythesmol
@afrenchielola is enjoying this beautiful day splooting in the grass. She's taken her loose leash walking a bit too seriously.
I'm the worst at filming while working but look how good @henrythesmol is for bath time!!! 😍 #positivereinforcement #forcefreedogtraining #bathtime
