HORSE TEETH DO NOT GROW!

A horse’s front teeth (incisors) as well as their premolars/molars will continue to ERUPT as the grinding surface is naturally worn by chewing. A young adult horse's teeth are typically 4.5–5 inches long, with a majority of the crown remaining below the gumline in the dental socket (reserve crown)

This occurs because they are hypsodonts and their mouth is designed for grazing. Erupting teeth help horses maintain good contact between their grinding surfaces, which helps them chew efficiently (about 1/8” per year)

The constant eruption can lead to dental issues, such as sharp points and other abnormalities, which is why a good Dental Provider is necessary. I know I know, horses in the wild don’t get their teeth done. I’m happy to write about that in another post

Because there is a finite amount of reserve crown, the term “eruption” is used rather than “grow” because the whole tooth never gets longer and it can eventually expire whereas animals who have teeth that truly grow (rodents, rabbits and squirrels) do not.

All that to say a lot is going on in your horse’s mouth as teeth are erupting, especially the youngsters under the age of 5

Every horse should be examined by a qualified/certified Equine Dental Provider every 6-12 months with a bright light and a full mouth speculum

Happy to help- give me a call or shoot a message

Ever wonder what your horses mouth looks like if you neglect their teeth? Ever wonder why your horse has a sudden change in mood, personality, and problem rides? The answer could lie in the teeth! Poorly kept teeth will in turn cause TMJ pain, poll pain, neck pain, and back pain due to head tossing trying to avoid the pain being inflicted by the bit. When a horses teeth aren't properly aligned they can have difficulty properly chewing their food leading to weight loss. This can all be avoided with a simple fix, floating your horses teeth on a yearly basis. A horses teeth grow for their entire lives, one misaligned, missing, or abscessed tooth can cause problems throughout their entire mouth, and ultimately their body.

DID YOU KNOW…..
When a horse DOES NOT have molar contact because of overlong incisors (their front teeth) they can’t grind or chew their food properly leaving them with a bloated appearance. A lot of people think their horse is fat and just eats a lot… but the truth is the horse is bloated and eating more to try and get the nutrients it needs to feel full…. 🤯

Performance Equine Dentistry operates on a completely mobile basis! That's right, I come to you! No need to transport your horses anywhere, I'll bring my services right to your doorstep. Let's make sure your horses are in top shape before winter arrives (seems like it's just around the corner 🥶).

Client post:
Yesterday's dental session for my 10 horses was a lengthy process. Porshe required extra attention due to stubborn caps, while the others needed routine maintenance. My Blue's teeth were in excellent condition, requiring minimal work. Sox and Elle have reached an age where annual dental care is really crucial. The dentist was impressed by Mary's gentle nature and wanted to load her up and take her home. I highly recommend April and her expertise and commitment are to be admired . Previously, she stopped by on one of her trips going through and assessed my horses' size requirements and immediately invested in specialized equipment for Miniature Horses to ensure their comfort. For you people that don’t know what some of these tools cost, they are expensive. Her investment was so appreciated , as the smaller horses experienced no cuts or bruising from the regular designed heads and she was able to get up into the backs of their tiny mouths which others hadn’t always been able to do with regular dentistry tools. Her work was exceptional, and working on your knees is not easy. Her tools she purchased for this visit far exceeded her charges. For those that don’t do regular dental care on your horses, it is so essential as it truly prevents unnecessary suffering. I chose not to do Elle’s teeth last year due to breeding her. I had waited four years and spent a wad of money with my Repro Vet to get her in foal and didn’t want to risk losing her foal. I regretted my decision and my eyes leaked when I felt the sharp points that caused painful ulcers. I extend heartfelt thanks to April from Performance Equine Dental for her outstanding service. Her professionalism and dedication are truly commendable.

Thank you Heidi for having me out to work on your miniatures and Miss Blue! Had a great day getting to know all these special little ladies ♥️

I often get asked how often should my horse get a dental…

Between the ages of 2 1/2 and 5, horses will lose 24 “baby” (deciduous) teeth and erupt 36-44 adult teeth. There’s a lot going on in there! If the deciduous teeth become retained that’s another issue in itself. People often say they don’t think their horse needs dental work yet because they’re young. Besides needing their wolf teeth extracted before you begin to put a bit in their mouth, young horses are prone to excessive transverse ridges (ETR) and sharp points.

From 6-20 years it’s a yearly exam to balance the mouth and remove sharp points. If the horse has missing teeth or underlying conditions then every 6 months is optimal.

From 20+ years it’s every 6-12 months to examine for expiring teeth, missing teeth and teeth that may need to be removed.

Set them up for success. Proper dental care from the start is essential for a lifetime of health, comfortability and opportunity to reach their full potential.

Still have some availability for August and booking into September. Call or text April at 4039199663 or shoot me a message on messenger 😊
