Our first time growing lisianthus and it took its sweet time blooming, but wow, was it worth it ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿงก that peach colour is stunning. I worked in a flower shop for a few years during my time at university and I always called it a floppy rose because that's what it reminded me of. One of my favourites ๐Ÿฅ€

We didn't get to beets last year, so I'm glad we restocked our stash a bit this summer. Pickled beets are our favourite way to eat them! Do you know some of the benefits of eating beets? They increase oxygen uptake, lengthening the time it takes to become fatigued, which allows people to stay active longer. Beets also contain antioxidants, compounds in foods that help repair DNA and maintain good cell health, and they have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the risk for numerous chronic diseases, in addition to heart disease and stroke. The question is, what's your favourite way to eat this heart-healthy veggie?! โœŒ๏ธ

There's just something about white ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค We're usually all about the bright colours, but there's something about the contrast of the white against the green ๐Ÿ‘€ It's our first year growing Queen Anne's Lace and Feverfews for bouquets and they are stunning! The Yarrow is lush and full this year, too. Tonight was a perfect night for some planting and w**ding, minus the mosquitos ๐ŸฆŸ โœŒ๏ธ

We want to hear all the ways you cook with or preserve herbs! Typically, we just dehydrate and then grind or chop and add to spice jars. This year, we grew oregano, dill, basil, lemon thyme and rosemary. What are your favourite herbs and why?

๐Ÿฒ First, we sautรฉed onions, garlic, celery, ginger, jalapeรฑos, bell peppers & carrots in some EVOO in the Instant Pot.
๐Ÿฒ Then we added our peeled and chopped red kuri squash and 2 small sweet potatoes.

Red kuri squash has a unique silky smooth nutty flavour that really blended well with the sweet potato and carrot. It was a lovely Saturday lunch and we have lots of leftovers for the upcoming week, even after sharing some with our grandmother. Hope everyone else is having a nice relaxing weekend โœŒ๏ธ

Today was hot sauce day! Our first time and it was actually pretty easy. A little hard on the eyes and throat but nothing some sunglasses and a mask can't help ๐Ÿ˜Ž We used the Getty Stewart - Home Economist cayenne pepper recipe and threw in a few jalapeรฑos we had laying around. Cooked them down with some garlic, onion, water, salt and apple cider vinegar and then added some honey when we blended in the Vitamix. Strained into jars and voila. Two pro tips when making hot sauce: 1. Wear gloves. And 2. Cut the peppers with scissors. Makes life a whole lot easier. We're going to let these sit for a couple weeks in the fridge and then let the family rate it out of five flames ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ โœŒ๏ธ

Even though we weren't feeling ๐Ÿ’ฏ today, we wanted to make sure some of our produce got used up before turning on us. Today was salsa day, one of our favourite days. We're always blown away by the generosity of those around us ๐Ÿซ‘๐Ÿง…๐ŸŒถ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿง„ This week, will be more canned tomatoes, pickled beets and hot sauce. โœŒ๏ธ

Our favourite time of year! Today was a busy one. We processed some Swiss chard, made a wild plum sauce/syrup, dehydrated tomato skins, made some more apple juice and canned some stewed tomatoes with onions, garlic, spinach and basil. Although the cost of food is a big motivator for canning and food preservation, we also do it because we love to and we like knowing where our food is coming from. What have you canned or preserved this season so far? โœŒ๏ธ

Today we got a huge bag of ripe romas for $1 so we made a creamy roasted tomato and bell pepper soup. First we cleaned the tomatoes, then we cut them in half and broiled them in the over for a few minutes. That's our little tomato peeling truck ๐Ÿ… it makes it so easy! In another pot, we sautรฉed a variety of colours of bell peppers, onions and some frozen basil ice cubes we made a couple weeks ago.

Added those with the roasted tomatoes and a can of coconut milk into the Vitamix and voila. Homemade roasted tomato soup. Very easy. And very delicious. (This is not a canning recipe. This goes into the fridge.) โœŒ๏ธ

Tonight we made a super healthy and delicious veggie and lentil soup. First, we cut up some patty pan squash and roasted it in the oven. While that was baking, we sautรฉed onions, celery, Swiss chard, purple cabbage and zucchini. Then we added a can of lentils, added around 8 cups of water, some lemon juice, Braggs soy seasoning, veggie bouillon, a herb sachet, and some chili miso (great for any soup!). Once that heated up, we added the patty pan and then blended it in the Vitamix. A great way to use up some veggies and it freezes well! โœŒ๏ธ

Homemade apple juice using grandmas recipe was up this weekend. She even picked me the most perfect apples for it at her sister's house farm in Neepawa last week โค๏ธ the crabs are sweet and slightly larger than normal crabapples, but we're unsure of the exact type of both pictured. Either way, they made the best apple juice I've ever made. And I changed my method slightly from the last time I shared so here's the new (very simple) recipe.
๐ŸŽ Wash, cut off blossom end and quarter
๐Ÿ Add the chopped apples into pots and pour boiling water over them
๐ŸŽ Weigh the apples down with a plate or bowl
๐Ÿ Leave them for about a day and a half
๐ŸŽ Strain and add to containers. I prefer plastic because I've had glass containers break on me in the freezer
๐Ÿ Enjoy homemade apple juice without all of the added sugars

Everyone laughed at me for painting rocks to look like strawberies,.but found out that if you put them around your berry plants and bushes before the fruits appear, the birds will peck the red rocks. They hate pecking super hard things so they will leave the fruit when it appears. No crows. ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“

A surprise row of yellow onions we planted last year and never got around to harvesting, some green onion we planted from the grocery store 4 years ago that keeps coming up every year and two chive plants that come up fuller every year. It's and we thought we should talk onions since they are one of our first plants to come up each spring. onions have been a part of the human diet for more than 7,000 years?! In the middle ages, onions were even considered a form of currency, used to pay rent, or for goods and services and even given away as gifts. Another cool fact is that wild onions grow on every continent. Allium is the onion genus, with 600-920 species, making it one of the largest plant genera in the world. What's your favourite type of onion? We love chives and red onions ๐Ÿง… โœŒ๏ธ

Great info around container gardening for those of you with smaller spaces!

Great info around container gardening for those of you with smaller spaces!

YOU CAN ALWAYS GROW IN CONTAINERS

It's the start of April, and many Families are planting in the Garden. Some still have a few weeks to go, but have seedlings growing indoors. Everyone can grow in containers though, even if you live in an apartment or condo. You can grow vegetables and herbs in containers indoors during the Winter, and have those fresh salads you always crave, and then put them out on the patio or deck in the Spring and Summer.

Please Plant a Garden. If you don't have a big yard, or any yard at all, you can still plant in containers. I feel now more than ever that we will need to grow Home Gardens, and be able to help Feed our Families. We are in a very uncertain time in our Countries history, and we need to be prepared.

There are several types of containers that can be used for growing vegetables including polyethylene plastic bags, clay pots, plastic pots, metallic pots, milk jugs, ice cream containers, bushel baskets, barrels, and planter boxes. It is important to use containers that can accommodate roots of the vegetables you want to grow as the vegetables vary in sizes and rooting depths.

The container needs to have good drainage, and should not contain chemicals that are toxic to plants and human beings. Most vegetables grown in backyard gardens can be grown in containers, although a container's diameter and depth needs to be considered when selecting what vegetables to grow. The plant density (number of vegetable plants per container) depends on individual plant space requirements, and rooting depth.

It's best to use one of the potting mixes in vegetable container gardening as they are light, disease-free, w**d seed-free, and have good drainage. Some potting mixes have pre-mixed plant nutrients, so read the information on the label about how long the pre-mix will feed your plants before you start applying fertilizers. You can also make your own two bushels of potting mix using the following recipe: Shredded sphagnum peat moss (1 bushel), Vermiculite (1 bushel), Ground limestone (1ยผ cups), Phosphate fertilizer either 0-20-0 (ยฝ cup) or 0-45-0 (ยผ cup), Slow release granular fertilizer such as 5-10-5 (1 cup).

Container-grown plants require more frequent fertilization than field-grown plants because of the limited space within the container for drawing nutrients. Fertilizers can be mixed with the soil mix before filling the container and can also be applied as a nutrient solution. Nutrient solutions can be made by dissolving soluble fertilizer such as 10-20-10, 12-24-12 or 8-16-8 in water following label directions. The nutrient solution is applied once a day when the plants are watered. How often you water may vary with vegetables, but once a day is adequate.

Leach the unused fertilizer nutrients from the potting mix once a week by applying tap water only. It is also very important to water occasionally with a nutrient solution containing micro nutrients such as copper, zinc, boron, manganese, and iron and follow label directions in order to give plants the right amounts.

Plants grown in containers need frequent watering as the containers dry fast. Watering on a daily basis is necessary to provide adequate moisture for plant growth. Apply enough water to reach the bottom of the container. Allow the excess to drain out through drainage holes. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering as this will encourage development of foliar disease. Try not to allow the containers to dry out completely between watering as this will lead to flower and fruit drop. Do not over water the plants as the container will be waterlogged and the roots will lack oxygen leading to poor growth and eventually, perhaps, the plant's death.

The size of the containers needed will depend a lot on the vegetable or herbs you are planting. Most Herbs can be planted in 1/2 - 1 gallon containers. Cabbages, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Leaf Lettuce, Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Cherry Tomatoes can be planted in 1 gallon containers. Beets, Carrots, Eggplants, Peppers and Radishes need 2 gallon containers. Your regular tomatoes will need 3 gallon containers. (great info from the University of Illinois Extension)

We're bringing back and thought this quote was a really thought provoking one to start with. According to a 2020 study by the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, in partnership with Angus Reid, they found that 51% of respondents grew at least one variety of fruit or vegetable in a garden. Of those, 17.4%โ€”or nearly one in five Canadiansโ€”started growing food at home during the pandemic. With food prices only going up, more and more people are going to start gardening or expand their gardening practice each year. Do you have your own garden? What's your favourite fruit or veggie or herb to grow? โœŒ๏ธ

With the cost of food, more and more people will be planting their own food. Here is a great resource for how much you should plant per person.

WE WILL NEED TO GROW ENOUGH FOR OUR FAMILIES

It has become more important than ever for You to be able to grow at least part of what You and Your Family eat on a yearly basis. Big factors are the many chemicals and pesticides used on vegetables and fruits in the grocery stores, the rising food prices we are all seeing, and the instability we have seen throughout the world, and in our own Country. We are in a very uncertain time in our Countries history, and we need to be prepared.

Many Families, like yours, are now growing their own Home Gardens--much like our Grandparents and Great Grandparents did with their Victory Gardens years ago. They grew their own Food, Saved their Seed, and were very Self-Sufficient.

The chart below gives you a good idea of how much of each Seed variety or plant you will need to grow per person, based on picking and eating them fresh. If you plan on Canning or freezing your Veggies to get thru the year, you will need to plant more. I would suggest you multiply the amount listed by 3 - 4.

Seeds or plants per 100-ft. row is the recommended amount or number to use for proper spacing and growth. Estimated yield per 100-ft. row is based on optimum growth, so it could be different from Family to Family. If you don't plant in 100-ft rows, then you can divide the amounts down to the size you do plant. So if you have a 5' x 4' raised bed ( 20 sq ft ), you would just divide the 100' results by 5 .

FOR OPTIMUM YIELDS, YOU WILL WANT TO:
1) Start Off with fresh viable Heirloom Seeds
2) Use a good Compost/Soil mixture
3) Maintain Fertility
4) Provide enough water
4) Use Mulch
5) Control Pests ( insects, and the furry types) Companion Plants are a good way to control and deter pests, while staying Organic.

Good Healthy HEIRLOOM SEEDS will make all the difference when you need that Big Yield at harvest time. At THE SEED GUY, we have a great Homesteaders Seed package that has 60 Heirloom Seed Varieties, 34,000 total Seeds, all Non GMO and Sale Priced Now at $69

You get 49 Veggie varieties and 11 Herb varieties. You would definitely be able to Feed Your Family with this Seed package, and you can store the Seeds you don't use right away in the 10 x 14 silver mylar bag we provide. All Heirloom Seeds are Small Farm-Grown, we hand count and package to make sure you get the best germination, and they are Fresh from the New 2021 Harvest. You will get the freshest Seeds.

You can see Seed varieties and Order this Seed package on our website at https://theseedguy.net/seed-packages/50-60-variety-heirloom-seed-package.html

***FYI--Due to the overwhelming amount of sales the last few weeks, we had to put sales on hold now until we catch up. We have good stock, and will put them back up for sale on March 14th at 9:00 am. We apologize about the inconvenience. ***

Those giant blooms ๐Ÿ˜ peonies are one of our favourite flowers. Large and dramatic, their scent definitely matches their big personality. A peony is said to embody romance and love, and they are regarded as the omen of good fortune and happy marriage. Peony plants can live to be 100 years old and still produce flowers! The one pictured in front of our house is over 30-40 years old and carries tiny streaks of red on some of the white petals. What's your favourite flower?! โœŒ

It still amazes me every time I plant a seed and it sprouts and grows into a large vegetable plant, capable of producing enough food to feed our family ๐Ÿ’š in order here, we have a spaghetti squash seedling, yellow onions and garlic. My first time growing all 3 ๐ŸŒฑ some other things were growing this year include Kale, red onions, 3 types of tomatoes, white and orange pumpkins, butternut squash, 2 types of cucumbers, cantaloupe, green beans, strawberries, potatoes, red and orange bell peppers, herbs and jalapeรฑos. To us, this is years of planning and hard work and waiting and getting multiple people's help and spending over $10,000. We had a well put in last year and Dustin was smart enough to put in "hydrants" in strategic places around the farm so we are able to water our gardens and let me tell you, we are in gardening heaven this year. Moreso than we normally are. Having water at our fingertips is not something we take for granted. And it is a beautiful thing ๐Ÿ’™ โœŒ

05/28/2021

It's and since we had a frost 3 nights this week here in , we thought we'd talk some frost facts. In gardening terms, a "light freeze" or "light frost" refers to temperatures that fall just a few degrees below freezing for a few hours. Some hardy plants may not be damaged. A "hard frost" or "killing frost" comes when the temperature drops further, below 28 degrees, for a longer time. It will kill the top growth of most perennials and root crops. This spring, the weather got us feeling a little too confident and we jumped the gun a bit, planting some squash, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. We covered them with some pots but I'd say that the frost mixed with cut worms from having such a dry spring, led to the loss of around half of the 30 plants we put in the ground ๐Ÿ™ƒ We should be okay moving forward weatherwise so more planting is on the agenda this weekend ๐Ÿ’š Whats everyone else up to? โœŒ
