Agriculture in the Classroom is a industry-supported initiative designed to work in partnership with Newfoundland & Labrador (NL) educators. Agriculture in the Classroom is intended to help NL children increase their awareness and understanding of why our food system is essential in society. We participate in many events throughout the year such as Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month, Rooting for

Health, Amazing Agriculture Adventure and Trade Shows. AITC-NL's Little Green Thumbs (LGT) and Little Green Sprouts (LGS) programs are in 112 schools across Newfoundland and expands every year. The Little Green Thumbs program aims to help young people value the health of themselves, the environment and their community through active participation in a classroom garden. The grow kits, soil and seeds form an indoor garden that complement learning concepts such as where food comes from, how to grow healthy plants, sustainable food systems, community interdependence and nutrition in fun, interesting and relevant ways.

Mohsin Zaidi is an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research biologist in St. John’s . He supports the research on potato wart disease caused by the fungus Synchytrium endobioticum, at the AAFC Avondale site, one of the only outdoor potato wart research facilities in the world.

Meet Julia Wheeler, an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada plant research scientist who works to develop strong and sustainable agriculture and vegetable crop production systems with farmers and communities in northern Canada.

“Resilient and sustainable northern food systems are critical to food security and sovereignty in northern communities. Their soils and climates can be very challenging to grow food and having local food production is vital for supplying fresh, high-quality produce. I’m very fortunate to be working in such an important field. Through my work, I get to meet people across the north, learn about their food system priorities, access local and generational knowledge, and work together to co-develop production systems specifically designed for northern communities.” Agriculture in the Classroom Canada
