Not behaviour related but something we needed to share!
There are a ton of risks with letting your dog hang their head out the window but let's be realistic, not everyone can afford/has space for a designated car kennel.
If you're letting your dog hang their head out the window this summer, please keep these safety tips in mind:
- Tether them into the vehicle using a secure leash/seat belt
- Attach the tether is a harness, NOT a collar (Darla's leash is connected to her collar here but we were just jumping in the car for the picture 🤫)
- Put the child safety locks on the back doors
- Only open the window enough for them to peak their head out
A fully open window is an opportunity for a dog to jump out, tethered or not!
Maybe get em some "doggles" too!? 😎 Stay safe out there!

Not sure what's cuter, Brystal's smile or her little ear sticking out of the cap!
This lovely little lady recently graduated from our Puppy Foundation Program... with flying colors! Brystal learned the foundations of leash walking, recall, drop it, leave it and other life skills. Most importantly, her owners have a better understanding of HOW our dogs learn and HOW they perceive the world. This is what will create longevity in Brystal's happy and confident personality.
Brystal was a real show off with her skills but as always, it is up to the owners to continue to practice and advance these skills. Some owners do best in a structured program to keep them on track, this is why we offer a Puppy Foundation Program Level 2!

Today I had to say goodbye to my best friend.
As some of you may not know, Mya is the inspiration behind AYM. She is the reason I became a veterinary technician and a trainer. I loved her with my whole heart and a piece of me will be gone with her.
Please have patience with email/message responses over the next few days while I learn to navigate life without her. Hug your fur babies extra tight tonight 🤎
Many owners will confuse exposure and socialization, this can have life-long effects on your dog.
Especially as young, developing puppies, socialization needs to be structured and positive. Just taking your dog to a pet-friendly store, letting them have free range and letting anyone approach them can be very overwhelming and anxiety-inducing.
Our dogs thrive in structure and we need to teach them our expectations when they are in a public setting. And we need to make it fun! Our dogs need to enjoy the experience or else this may elicit a negative emotional response.

Welcome Sir Waffles! 🧇
Waffles signed up for our Private Socialization Program. He struggles with anxiety in new, busy areas and staying calm around passing dogs.
Our first visit took us to Canadian Tire! We started at the quietest part of the parking lot and inched closer and closer until Waffles started to show signs of anxiety. We recognized Waffles' current comfort level and worked within that.
He is a such a happy and fun boy who will be exploring new environments with confidence in no time!

A big misconception with positive reinforcement training is that you are teaching your dog to listen to the treats and not you.
The truth is, we need to motivate our dogs to learn. Our dogs love training but we still need to motivate them to use their brain! It is unrealistic to expect your dog to succeed in training because they just want to please you... do you work for free just because you like your boss!?
Food or toy reward is used to motivate our dogs to learn and repeat wanted behaviors but they are weaned out once they KNOW the behavior. This happens at a different rate for each dog.

Attention seeking behaviours can be difficult to deal with. They often elicit anger and frustration in owners. We need to take a step back and acknowledge WHY our dogs are acting this way. 🤔
A tired dog is a happy dog! As owners, it is our job to provide opportunities for physical and mental enrichment, each and everyday! Increasing your dogs mental enrichment alone can create a dramatic difference in behaviour. 😴
Did you know that if you pick up your dog when they are chewing on something inappropriate or yell that them to "be quiet!!" when they're barking, you are inadvertently reinforcing that attention seeking behaviour... oops! 🤭

Darla is sitting just outside of a dog park. For a dog who loves to play with other dogs, this is really challenging for her!
Darla is rewarded anytime she shows a calm behaviour or gives her attention to the trainer. With repetition and consistency, this will teach Darla that the reward is with her trainer and not with other dogs. 🐩
No one wants to be pulled down the road by their dog, no one wants to have the dog that can't stop barking at everything and anything. This training may look boring but it is very challenging and beneficial for the dog.

Now we're NOT saying that if your dog develops an unwanted behaviour it is your fault! We are saying that if your dog has a behaviour that you want to change, your time and effort put into training will directly reflect the changes you seen. 👀
Many people look for that "quick fix" to address unwanted behaviour but there isn't one! It takes time, dedication and hard work. 📝
If you are using training techniques that work for your dog, creating training opportunities for your dog frequently and progressing training when suitable, you will see progress. 🤎

Dogs are amoral, opportunistic and self-centred, they are not spiteful or malicious! 📣
As humans, it is natural for us to feel frustrated when we are asking our dog one thing and they are doing something else. This if often misinterpreted as disobedience, defiant, unruly, or spiteful. Our dogs are not capable of acting in this way! It is important to remember that during your training sessions. 📝
If your dog is not listening to a command/cue that they have previously proven to know and understand, you need to assess the situation. Is your dog distracted by another dog or human, do they need to urinate or defecate, are they anxious or scared? 😥
As owners, it is our responsibility to advocate for our dogs. If you and your dog are not succeeding in a specific environment, that doesn't mean you won't ever succeed! Reassess, regroup, try again. 🤎

Watch as Darla and Blue demonstrate playful body language! Each dog is a bit different when it comes to body language. Darla is very bouncy and likes to use her front legs to smack. Blue is a bit calmer and uses smaller and quicker movements Both dogs demonstrate loose wagging of the tail (in a circle or back and forth), playful bows, and each dog takes turns instigating the play. Both dogs are engaged with each other and disengaged with the owners. Look for these signs next time your dog is meeting a new playmate!

We're so proud of this kiddo. 🤎 When we met Ripley, he could only be walked on a halti due to his extreme pulling... he's a big, strong boy! He loves people and dogs and gets very excited to greet everyone he passes. 🐶 We started by introducing clicker training, reinforced his "sit" and "down" commands, taught a "touch" and "heel" command, and introduced mental enrichment games during meal times. At our latest lesson, Ripley showed off all his hard work by walking like a dream with his mom! 🌟 He's still got some learning to do, particularly with managing his excitement around dogs but he has made strides of progress and that is worth celebrating. We can't wait to see what else he is capable of! ☀️

Throwback to fall when Darla was learning her off leash heel! 🍂 It took a ton of training to get to this point and we've even strengthened the command since then. Like most training, this skill ties into and can strengthen numerous other skills. An off leash heel can strengthen recall, leash manners, and general obedience in distracting situations. Just your reminder that it is possible for your dog to love their crate... in fact, that's how it should be! 🥰 Crate training has numerous benefits for both owner and dog; - Aids in elimination training - Provides a safe space when unsupervised - Aids in safe travel - Decreases stress during stays at the veterinary hospital or grooming salon if crates are utilized - Can be used to help teach appropriate greetings - Let's owners leave the house without feeling guilty or worried Darla didn't love her crate at first, in fact, crate training is something we really struggled with. We knew crate training was important for her safety and our peace of mind so we made it a priority to work through the challenges with her. 🐶 Mya failed crate training as a puppy and as a young child I never thought anything of it. Years later, we came across the need for her to be in a crate so we reintroduced and successfully crate trained her at 13 years of age! By now you've seen that February is Dental Health Month for our pets. 🦷 With our Veterinary Technician background, we have a large passion for pet dental health. We all know that we should be brushing our dogs teeth but the majority of owners don't actually do this routinely, why not!? Most owners claim that their dog will not let them brush their teeth and it's a battle whenever they try. Darla is here to remind you (and your dog!) that brushing teeth can, and should be, a very positive experience! Darla's had a brushing routine since she was a puppy but it is never too late to start! It sounds so simple but the ability to relax and focus in a new/exciting environment is something almost every puppy struggles with! 🤭 This video shows Darla, at about 9 months of age, successfully maintaining a calm behaviour while people approach. The people passing by were cut out for privacy sake but you can hear them talking and whistling as they get closer to us. Watch as Darla acknowledges the approaching people, maintains her sitting position and gives her attention back to the handler.
