*Update as of 1/4/24 - 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died.

Since 12/5/23 in the 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' group on Facebook there have been 48 dogs and 3 cats sick eating Purina, 10 of which have died. It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Purina may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."

Just a reminder to prepare our pets for NYE:
1. If your pet is scared of fireworks, allow them access to a place where they like to hide and feel safe, maybe in their crate, under the bed/sofa or in the laundry.
2. Close all curtains to minimise light flashes.
3. Play some music in the background, try Bach, or some dogs find audiobooks soothing.
4. Have lots of their favourite treats and toys ready so that you can engage them in games and fun times for distraction, if possible.
5. If they are upset or scared, cuddling them will not 'reinforce their fear'. Please do comfort them if it helps them to feel better.
6. Make sure your pet is microchipped and has ID such as a tag/collar on, just in case they get lost.
7. Ask your vet about meds - some pets who are phobic need them to prevent a panic attack.

⚠️ Study is 20 years old

⚠️ Study contained a mere 8 dogs

⚠️ Only 4 of those dogs were given a garlic extract

⚠️ The Garlic extract that was fed via a tube into the stomach was equiv. to 20 cloves of garlic i.e. not a normal amount a pet parent would give and was repeated for 7 days which would be equiv. to 140 cloves of garlic.

It's hard to understand the point of this study because this isn't an amount any pet parent would feed their dog or an amount you could probably get a dog to eat even if you tried!

We also do not know what-sized dogs they used in the study. If they were small dogs vs large dogs then this is a variable that would be important to consider if there were any results that could negatively impact our dogs - A Great Dane vs Chihuahua or even a standard laboratory dog being a Beagle are likely to have different outcomes. You would think as study to learn about the safe upper limits of garlic would have been more productive.

😬 Anyways... that's the study that everyone thinks their dog is going to die or get very sick if they eat garlic....

Let us fast forward to 2018 where another garlic study was conducted, this time on aged garlic...

Again, there were 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 in the clinical signs, complete blood count, and serum biochemical parameters, Heinz bodies and eccentrocytes.

👉 The conclusion of this study was that: The long-term oral administration of AGE at a dose of 90 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀.

What Triggers Reverse Sneezing in Dogs? 🐶

Reverse sneezing occurs when your dog forcefully and quickly inhales air, instead of pushing it out (as occurs during a normal sneeze). This “backward sneeze” typically leads to a loud snorting or honking sound, which sometimes sounds like your dog is choking.

Irritants can trigger a reverse sneeze, including household products like air fresheners, cleaning products and fragrances, as well as pollen, dust or powder. It can also occur when your dog’s soft palate is irritated for reasons like overexcitement, pulling on a leash or sudden changes in temperature.

In the first study of its kind, a new 2023 paper published by Nature Scientific Reports shows dogs given rawhide chews🦴 a few times a month had a significant chance of developing gastrointestinal issues later in life. However, the veterinary scientists also found when offered daily, there was a 117.2% increased risk of developing gut disease!!

On a side note, aside from all the dogs that have lost their lives to intestinal blockages, the last recall by the FDA found a not approved "chemical cleaning agent" called quaternary ammonia (QACs) in these harmful chews. And more recently, the Environmental Working Group reported a chemical used to whiten rawhides, titanium dioxide' was a genotoxin and may damage your dog's DNA.🧬
