Bronze Beauty - soft feathery Fennel Fronds heading to chefs this week. Culinary & medicinal uses are vast. We love the distinct licorice-y flavor and delicate visual pairing for fish, salads, baking, infusions, decoction, sauce, even liqueur.
The plant is rich in B Vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium and manganese, and has an extremely impressive array of medicinal qualities.
It has the ability to tone, strengthen, detoxify and heal the liver; it increases bile production, aiding digestion, and is widely used as a digestive and carminative. Fennel also has anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties and so assists the immune and nervous systems. It is anti-microbial and has actions against a range of bacteria as well as various fungi and yeasts. It is diuretic and detoxifies by stimulating the production of urine and the elimination of toxins through the urine. It is said to help improve eyesight; and is a galactagogue – i.e. promotes lactation– so can be extremely beneficial to post-natal mothers.

Syrup made from fennel juice is used as a remedy for bronchial ailments and coughs. It helps to thin mucus so you can expectorate efficiently.

As a dye plant, fennel offers up lovely pale yellows to forest greens, depending on the mordant and fibre you use.

Overall, fennel is an essential food and medicine to be grown in any garden.

"I held you every second of your life."
—Stephanie Paige Cole

After midnight yesterday, the spirits of our little ones began making their way back to us for their annual visit guided by the light in our offerings: of the candles, the scent of the beautiful cempasúchil flowers, the fragrance of the smoke of the copal incense, and the love in the hearts of those who remember them.

Today is Dia de los Angelitos, the Day of the Little Angels when we remember loved ones who were not able to be born, infants, and children who left us too soon. They will spend the day with us and, after midnight tonight, will be joined by the souls of our adult loved ones so that our remembrances, smiles, laughter, songs, and, above all, our love will bring them happiness.

May all the mothers and fathers and all the family members who today celebrate the life of their little ones feel the touch of butterfly wings, and may the blessings of the Ancestors bring peace and healing to their hearts. All our relations.

Spooktober approaches! Ticket sales are now open for October evening programs:

Haunted Nanaimo Lantern Tours

Crime & Punishment Lantern Tours

Brother XII Presentations

These tours and presentations sell out quickly, so book your ticket early!

The Haunted Nanaimo Lantern Tour includes tales of unexplained phenomena, mysterious apparitions, and spooktacular stories! Not into the supernatural? Join the Crime & Punishment Lantern Tour instead and hear stories about some of Nanaimo’s most notorious outlaws and daring heists.

The Brother XII presentation, led by curator Aimee Greenaway, explores the history of Edward Wilson and his rise and fall as Brother XII from a spiritual teacher to high-profile court cases, scandals and conspiracy theories. This year’s presentation will include new details (and questions!) about the colony’s population, gleaned from the recently released 1931 census.

Important stuff!

Check out our new blog post where Dr. Adam Cobb provides information about the importance of this month’s webinar series and also addresses some of the misinformation and myths about atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), global climate change, and projections of future conditions.

In July’s webinar series, we’ll discuss the primary drivers of re-greening our degraded and desertified landscapes, soil life and the essential microorganisms that support plants and ecosystems. In addition, we will highlight some of the ongoing, grass-root efforts led by Ecosystem Restoration Communities to regenerate soil food webs that, in turn, facilitate ecological restoration.

With a concerted focus on soil ecology and the re-greening of our declining landscapes, we can reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations by accumulating excess carbon into plant and soil systems! In collaboration with plants and microorganisms, we can reverse current destructive trends and ensure a better future for ourselves and the organisms that share and sustain our home planet.

To learn more, read the full blog here: https://www.soilfoodweb.com/ramping-up-restoration-and-turning-down-the-heat/

Register to join our July Webinar series here: https://promo.soilfoodweb.com/reg-webinar-regreening-the-planet/. You can watch the replays and join the two remaining webinars LIVE!
