Please help CatNap Society Nanaimo's non profit cat rescue group with over 25 years of service within our community!

We are at capacity. This year we have taken in over 400 cats and kittens needing help in the Nanaimo - Ladysmith area. Homeless, stray and sick cats needing help is a very real problem right here in our own backyard

CatNap Society is a 100% volunteer run organization. Our volunteers and resources are stretched to capacity. We need your help to find Foster Homes, Adopters and Donations to continue our vital work helping vulnerable cats/kittens in Nanaimo and Ladysmith.

We have almost 200 cats and kittens currently in care - our foster homes are at capacity with many opening up an extra room to help out but the requests for help keep coming.

But we need help from the community - here are some of the ways you can help:

1. FOSTER - we are looking for foster homes for kittens and cats. Do you have a spare room or bathroom that you could use as a designated fostering space? A little time, patience and love to share? Complete the online volunteer form to get started (https://www.catnapsociety.com/volunteer)
2. ADOPT - adopting a rescued cat or kitten means that another one from our community can be helped. Links to uur adoptable cats are pinned to the top of our FB page. Cats and kittens are posted as they are socially and medically ready.
3. DONATE - monetary donations can be made via this post or via CanadaHelps (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/82161). All donations go directly towards the needs (medical, food, litter and other supplies) of the locally rescued cats. Tax receipts issued directly by donation platform.
4. MONTHLY DONOR - become a monthly supporter through Canada Helps (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/82161) - monthly donations gives CatNap a regular stream of funds to help pay for medical bills etc for the cats.
5. DONATE REFUNDABLES - our next bottle drive is scheduled for January 18, 2025. We will take refundables any time. Email [email protected] or message us on FB or IG
6. BUSINESS DONATIONS - we are looking for donations from businesses for our annual online auction coming up in November. Email [email protected]
7. LIKE & SHARE - please like and share this post to help spread the word. Many people don't realize the number of cats needing help right here in Nanaimo-Ladysmith

Thank you for your ongoing support, without it we wouldn't be able to help the cats and kittens

I've had this piece of driftwood for well over a decade and decided to re-purpose it into a business card holder!

It's still a work in progress, i'm experimenting with different options, possibly an oil or a stain after some more sanding & polishing.

Cat approved, of course! 😻🐾

Comment below and let me know your thoughts. I will have it on display at the Cowichan Exhibition this weekend, so come say hi! 🙏

Let's talk circular economy.

The circular economy is like nature's recycling system, where nothing goes to waste. Imagine a world where everything we use can be reused, recycled, or returned to the earth. That's the circular economy in action!

Wool fits perfectly into this eco-friendly cycle. Unlike synthetic materials that can hang around in landfills for centuries, wool is 100% biodegradable. When its job is done, it simply returns to the soil, feeding nutrients back into the earth.

By choosing wool, you're not just getting a beautiful, cosy, and durable product – you're also helping to reduce waste and pollution in order to create a healthier ecosystem.

So next time you're shopping, think circular and choose wool. It's a small choice that makes a big difference for our planet's future.

Did you know that the lack of pet-inclusive housing is a leading cause of animals being surrendered to shelters across the country?

It's time to address this issue head-on. Pet-inclusive housing reduces stress and loneliness for tenants, lowers turnover rates for landlords, and enhances social connections in communities.

Use your voice to create a more inclusive and compassionate housing system in Canada! Humane Canada has partnered with MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and our members nationwide to ensure renters with pets are included in a national Renters' Bill of Rights.

Wool is even used as insulation inside homes, office buildings & DIY camper vans!

Combine that with some h**pcrete, you could have a 'carbon-minimal' building like the University of British Columbia!

https://news.ubc.ca/2023/04/one-of-the-first-carbon-minimal-institutional-buildings-in-canada/

Your wool couch is a carbon warrior.

Yeah yeah, we hear you say. We can almost hear the eye rolls.

But honestly, the wool fibre is it's very own climate change activist. Fighting carbon one fibre at a time!

Here's how:

🐑 Sheep munch on grass, which absorbs CO2 from the air
🐑 This carbon becomes part of the wool as it grows (amazingly, up to 50% of wool's weight is pure carbon!)
🐑 At the end of its long life, when wool biodegrades, it slowly releases this carbon back into the soil
🐑 Plants then use this carbon to grow, continuing the cycle

By choosing wool, you're not just choosing products that are comfortable, beautiful, long-lasting, warm (and cool), and generally just awesome - you're also purchasing a piece of the carbon cycle itself!

Yet another reason why if you want to live naturally - choose wool.

And voila! The wool pellets have absorbed the excess water overnight, expanded and are already releasing vital micronutrients like nitrogen & potassium, back into the soil.

I use banana water periodically to enrich the soil with potassium & other micronutrients. In order to help release the most nutrients, I cut the banana peel into small pieces, and leave for a couple of days to soak in water.

Although the nutrients released from the banana into water are minimal, I use it in conjunction with organic soil, to help balance the bioavailability of nutrients for the plants.

After I use the banana water, I integrate the banana peels in my compost in order to minimize waste and continue the plant’s lifecycle.

Grow baby grow!

Ps. Don’t try this indoors though, smells like a sh*t house door off a tuna boat!

Did you know wool can be used in your garden?!

Wool is an incredible renewable, biodegradable, hygroscopic, hypoallergenic natural fibre. It can also provide many benefits for our soils and plants.

Wool pellets are 100% raw unwashed sheeps wool. They may also contain trace amounts of sheep manure and vegetable matter like straw, hay and other grasses.

They are made using a pellet machine, otherwise referred to as a ‘pelletizer’.
This machine uses heat and mechanical force to shred & compress the wool into a pelletized form. The heat used during this process also destroys any seeds that may be present in the wool.

Wool pellets hold 3 times their weight in water to reduce how frequently you need to water your plants and keep your soil from drying out in the hot summer months.

Lanolin is the naturally occurring oil found in sheep’s wool, which helps retain water inside the pellets, until the plant is ready to use it.

Wool pellets slowly release nitrogen, potassium, and other micronutrients for plant growth and health. They start releasing nutrients right away and continue to do so as they biodegrade over the course of 6 months.

The use of wool pellets or raw sheep’s wool, act as a natural slug repellent & w**d suppressant.

Tune in tomorrow to see how the pellets work after tonight’s storm, and find out why I’m choosing to reduce and control the absorption of water during a rainy week!

What does this mean to me?

It means rolling up my sleeves & getting to work.

It means caring enough about a stranger I’ve never met, going above and beyond to help, using the gifts I have been given.

The gifts that could better the life of another human being or an entire species of animals.

Don’t have the money? Then spend the time & share your gifts. That’s something we all can give.

There’s 24 hours a day, how will you spend it?

It’s time to step up.

Join us in creating a better world for cats & humans.

This is our world & together, we WILL make a difference.

We are proud to announce a preview of our second charitable campaign, to raise funds & awareness for prostate & pancreatic cancer.

‘Existence From Within’, a poem written by Sean, the owner of Kitty Cat Habitat, with photo taken of Chief Executive Cat, Patrick ‘Patty Cakes’.

The poem will be available in multiple formats, both digital & physical. This particular one on display is made of canvas, hand stretched onto sustainable material.

This poem is a symbol of hope and a comfort to survivors of cancer and the loved ones we have lost, who will forever live on in our hearts.

The poem will be for sale in the near future, with 100% of proceeds donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

It will be a part of another custom designed product, made from sustainable materials in the theme of prostate & pancreatic cancers respectively.

Follow us along this journey, as we continue to support those who need it the most.

Together, we WILL make a difference.

Earlier today in Normandy, 47 Commando Royal Marines made their way to the beach from a landing craft to begin a ‘yomp’ across the fields to their commemorative event in Port-en-Bassin to pay tribute to their forebears.

06/04/2024

What if I told you there was a way for your clothing to last forever, and it has nothing to do with a warranty?

What if I told you, the same could be true for your cat or dog bed, including their toys?

Would you believe me if I told you… this isn’t a fantasy, as it’s already true?

I present to you, ‘The Lifecycle of Natural Fibres - Infinite Sustainability’ an original concept and design by Kitty Cat Habitat. From top to bottom, left to right in a clockwise rotation, you can see how the use of plant and animal fibres work with nature, not against it.

From upcycling, recycling, composting or quilting, natural fibres like cotton, wool, h**p, or linen grow with purpose to ‘infinitely’ serve us, our animals, the ocean and forrest, but only if we let them.

Nature giveth but nature taketh away. It’s time to give more than we receive, and support what gives, yet gets nothing in return. As consumers and business owners, we hold the power to make a difference. Our choices and ‘demand’ as consumers influence the availability and ultimately the affordability of sustainable fibres.

Did you know, the stinging nettle plant is harvested and widely used throughout Nepal & India to produce durable and sustainable textiles? Or the milkw**d plant that supports the threatened Monarch Butterly, can ALSO be spun into fibre or used as insulation in jackets, gloves and boots? In fact, milkw**d has been used for buoyancy inside life jackets since WW2!

These aren’t just ‘fun facts’ or fanciful ideas, they are solutions and it’s up to us to support them. As a business owner who designs many of my own textile products, I have noticed an increase in collaborative partnerships within the industry worldwide. Like minded businesses join forces, share resources and find solutions. They collaborate, innovate and create sustainable threads that are better for you, your pets and the planet.

Will you help complete the cycle, so that everyone can win? You have the power, you have the choice but most importantly, you have a VOICE!

Stay tuned this week as we dive a little deeper, and explore the benefits of natural, sustainable fibres in pet products; the benefits for you, your pets and for the planet.

With love,

Your feline friends from Kitty Cat Habitat

When you shop local, you invest in your local economy, not some big conglomerate executives, who don’t even live in our country, nor do they care about what you want as a consumer.

Speaking of which, small businesses are more motivated to sell what you want to buy, therefore your voice is heard and your feedback matters!

Local markets are an opportunity to connect with artisans who take pride in the quality of their craft, many of which keep the tradition of handmade goods alive, which would otherwise be lost altogether or overshadowed by ‘fast fashion’ from mass production and unethical business practices.

Each craft has a unique story to tell, and often represents a family tradition, culture or heritage. That in itself is priceless and not something you will ever find on a dusty, coffee stained shelf.

Without the constraints of a board and shareholders, local vendors have the creative liberty to produce goods which support a positive (and meaningful) social and environmental impact, without just writing a blank cheque. They can produce fresh products with clean, simple and non-toxic ingredients, without the use of harmful substances, that would otherwise be required for mass production in retail chains.

Whether it be dog treats, soaps, vegetables or desserts, there are LOTS of options to choose from, with locally sourced, FRESH ingredients! Looking for up-cycled clothing and accessories? You’ll find that as well!

Search online for local markets and events or contact your local Chamber of Commerce or Tourism Centre to learn more about what’s going on in your community and where you can find and source from local talent. Enjoy some fresh air, try something new and take a break from mass production and overconsumption.
