Cowboy ranch hand available last week of June. Blue Merle tricolour.

This little cowpoke is something else. He’s pretty, bold, independent, and just has this old timey way about him. I really can’t wait to see him all grown up. He wants to have a job when he’s older.

Out of B6DR Izzie and by Broken Circle Tex

This is the last male Izzie pup being offered.

He’s from two really great working lines. Izzie needs no introduction as she is my main girl who works both sheep and cows, plus has dabbled in agility and disc. Tex is a really nice up and coming young dog who is just starting his career, but shows really nice confidence and ability to get in corners. He comes from the renowned Broken Circle Ranch in Idaho. I am just loving him.

This little cowboy comes with a two year health guarantee, dewormed, first set of shots, and will be registered ABCA.

My daughter can’t decide if his name is Arlo, like her favourite dinosaur movie, or Snickers because he eats so much. Either way, she really likes him.

I love this. I have had so many amazing “old timers” help me in my journey with horses and am so privileged to call them, and been able to call them ( to those who have passed away) my cherished friends. Everyone needs a chance to learn. Having the proper kindness and teachings are so important. Without that, eventually everything is lost.

I look forward to the day I have wisdom to pass onto my children and those who seek me out.

I want to speak a little on gatekeeping in dogs & why it's problematic.

I'm going to focus on Border Collies but this is relevant to many breeds so feel free to fill in the blanks, so to speak.

Border Collies are extremely trendy right now. They have been increasing in popularity over the last decade & it's only going up. People see them in the media, they're so beautiful, so photogenic, they look so great in the hands of a trainer, they do all the things! It's valid why they're popular. They're awesome in so many ways!

I get new applications for pups every single day & (while it may take a while for me to respond) it doesn't matter if they are good fits for my program or not, I always give people kindness & support. Even if they won't be getting a dog from me.

I have friends who have reached out to many different breeders who have been in the breed a long time & have great lines, really nice dogs. But these breeders are straight up condescending. If you haven't been in the breed & been open field trialing for x amount of years, then you had better not even ask, because there's a good chance you'll be belittled.

I can understand why these breeders are hesitant, because BCs are experiencing the "Dalmatian affect", everyone wants one & at least half of them want to breed. It's problematic. There's no denying that.

However.

That gives no excuse to be rude, hostile & disrespectful. How about instead, take the time to kindly educate rather than ostracize?

Callousness towards newcomers WILL NOT stop what is happening to the breed. Although it will ensure that all of these newcomers will instead get dogs from unscrupulous breeders & shifty lines, further perpetuating the problem. It results in people having to start from ground zero trying to create good dogs, with little to no guidance. I'm a newer breeder myself, I'm not perfect & neither are my dogs. So I'm not making this post from a position of a gatekeeper but more from the side of the gatekept, because I do wonder sometimes where I'd be today if I had been welcomed instead of disregarded.

When you gatekeep the good genetics, you don't stop people from breeding. You stop them from breeding well.

A great read!

A great read!

Recently, I heard a trainer say, “My dog just doesn’t get it, he can’t learn”
This statement is much more reflective of the handler than the dog.

Sometimes people get caught up in their own expectations, so much so, they put their desire of how they want their dog to work ahead of how that individual dog needs to work.
Handlers that blame their dogs are often seeking comfort for themselves, because their teaching is struggling.

Many times they are one dimensional in their approach. Rather than teach and encourage based on their dogs development, they focus on their preconceived path to success, which may include a lot of corrections and sometimes bullying.
The handler believes ‘my dog can’t learn X” (ie inside flanks, driving, shedding etc. ), when actually it’s the way it’s been taught that is the problem.
The issue may include the set up, the pressure, your foundation training, his confidence (in himself or you) or your mindset.
If you approach a new concept by making it difficult (even inadvertently), have expectations of how quickly your dog should learn, how proficient he should be or if you try to force behavior, it could be that you are creating the stress that your dog then associates with a specific task.
Just like people, dogs can get bored when you do the same thing too often, frustrated when the handler is too inconsistent or disheartened when it’s too arduous or too often being told ‘you’re wrong’.

When things aren’t going well you need to either have the knowledge to change your approach, or ask for help.
To be a good teacher you have to leave behind agendas and ego.
When I understood it was my responsibility to honestly assess my dog and tailor my training to best help him, instead of expecting him to figure it out, it was a game changer.
Training your dog may lead to blaming your dog.
Training yourself, leads to partnership.

Trainers that make lots of corrections with young dogs, including not letting them be tight, fast, etc. often believe their dogs should “push through” even when their body language isn’t keen for the work, usually in an effort to accelerate the training.
The problem with this is, you cannot recreate initial enthusiasm. For some young dogs, the resentment for the phase of work that was forced upon them, stays with them and could have been avoided if the handler had changed their approach.

If you try to shape or push your young dog and he gets reluctant, sniffs, goes unusually wide, is master conscious, turns tail or comes back to you for reassurance, he’s telling you that you’re spoiling his enjoyment.
It’s his way of letting you know he’s not ready for the pressure you're applying or doesn’t understand your way of communicating—It’s not ever normal or acceptable that a dog should quit working.
Sometimes handlers mistakenly interpret this and blame their dog, rather than recognizing something about their training approach has a bullying mindset rather than a teaching mindset.

Watch your dogs body language and demeanor. If he’s not enjoying what he’s doing, he’s probably not ready for the next step and/or he needs you to revise your approach.
Once he is enthusiastic and confident, try the next step and make adjustments based on his response.

Take the time it takes, to be certain your dog fully understands and enjoys a new training concept before you set expectations or make the task difficult.
Patience is one of the best gifts you can give your young dog to empower his confidence and development.

UPCOMING LITTER!!!!

If you’ve been following the page a lot of you may know the matriarch of our dog program, B6DR Izzie. She’s the tiny little black whirlwind that gets the job done and snuggles later on.

Izzie works both sheep and cattle, plays disc and games, and has also been panel tested clean through paw prints genetic (does not include EAOD). She produces phenomenal pups who excel both as sport champions and stockdog partners.

We are planning to breed Izzie this year to one of our studs. Yet to be determined here in the next couple months.

Please message the page to get on the upcoming list. You won’t want to miss these

The good thing about training a dog for work is that he doesn’t need to be perfect.
Shepherds used to train their dogs for work, and the trials were secondary; dogs would be polished up so they could compete with excellence, but work was the priority.
Today, most train for trials first, and the work is an afterthought.
When a dog is doing practical work, he can make mistakes and learn through experience with guidance from the handler, until he understands the task. This allows the dog to develop without a lot of pressure before he’s mentally able to handle it.
With most people now training for trialing, some make the mistake of striving for perfection, rather than excellence.

“Perfection” doesn't allow room for dogs to make mistakes and work things out on their own.
Those who strive for excellence understand that mistakes are inevitable and part of the path to learning and improvement, while perfectionists tend to see mistakes as failures.
Excellence we can reach for with effort, practice, and persistence. But pursuing perfection sets an impossibly high standard, not only for us but also for our dogs.

Some ideas perfectionists pursue is for their dogs to: work at the perfect distance off sheep, drill them for the perfect walk, make sure every flank is perfectly square, to name a few.
The problem with this, is assuming it is the same for all dogs- instead of making adjustments for a dogs individual type and amount of ‘eye’, directness, presence, excitability, temperament, etc.
Often these handlers have young dogs that “never really got keen enough to train” (when it was the initial over training that caused it) or an open dog that flanks rather than walks up, lacks enthusiasm for shedding, stopping running sheep, enjoying turning back, or other.

If you require perfection you can diminish your dogs spirit and their ultimate potential.
Perfectionists may sometimes gain 2-6 months at the start of their young dogs career, but often lose years at the end of it.

Dogs, and trainers alike, learn from being allowed to make mistakes, and, in turn, learning from those mistakes will pave the way for excellence.

You can improve every aspect of training and handling
when you’re humble enough to identify where you need help.
Whatever your level of training, novice, professional or in between,
one of the first steps to improving is accepting that what you know is limited, and what you don’t know is limitless—

The more you know, the more you realize how vast knowledge is; that what you’ve learned is from your specific experiences, mentors, friends, those you’ve helped and especially, every dog you’ve trained.
Everyone else’s education was garnered somewhat differently and with their own perspective, thus, the amount of knowledge available is boundaryless.
We all benefit from a growth mindset and ‘knowing it all’ is just someone that has stopped learning.

To keep getting better you have to put yourself in a position to sometimes be uncomfortable or possibly embarrassed, before pushing through to the next level.

You have an opportunity every day, through technology or travel, to surround yourself with experts, those that challenge you, inspire, encourage, teach and elevate you.

As you improve there will be struggles; but they are also lessons, which will help you grow and develop.
When you’re trying, you’re already more of a champion than anyone sitting on the fence criticizing.
Don’t be afraid to shoot for your dreams.
