This gorgeous girl is Norma Jean, a 7-year-old Staffordshire Terrier.
She had been suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs) throughout the year and despite her owner bringing her to see the vet and treating her with various antibiotics, the UTI kept re-occurring.
Her owner decided to allow us to x-ray her bladder so that we could see inside and look for stones that may be causing all the UTIs. We discovered some very large stones (as you can see in the xray image here), and the Dr. advised her owner that a surgery called a cystotomy would be necessary to remove them.
Within 24 hours of the surgery, her owner could already see a huge improvement in Norma Jeans spirits and her urine no longer had blood in it.

The Dr. recommend that she eats a veterinary prescribed urinary diet*, moving forward, and that she increased her water intake to help dilute her urine.

Norma Jean is now living her best life and her owner is so happy .

*specialty urinary diets are designed to make it as hard as possible for crystals/stones to form by keeping the urine pH within a certain range and to limit the minerals that form crystals/stones in the bladder.

Sometimes pets can feel extra chilly after their surgery. šŸ„¶
This is because anesthesia can cause their body temperature to drop, leading to chills and shivering as they wake up from the procedure. Our kennels have heated floors and we lay them on lots of cozy blankets and surround them with heat bags. But that wasn't enough for this guy, who seemed to be feeling the cold still, so our kind-hearted vet nurse, Heather, wrapped him in her Selkirk staff hoodie. šŸ„°
Now that's going the extra mile with patient care !

Fun animal fact for your Friday!

A reindeerā€™s eyes turn blue in winter! Scientists discovered the collagen fibres in their reflective layer pack together more tightly and start to reflect blue wavelengths of light instead of yellow, to help them capture more light during the dark winter months.
