Marley came to see us for his kitten vaccinations & took over as official greeter in reception, welcoming our younger visitors & helping them to feel more relaxed about their own pet appointments.
Great job Marley, you earned those treats that you helped yourself to. 😍

Happy Halloween from all the Selkirk staff πŸ§›β€β™‚οΈ
It was great to see some of our patients getting into the spirit of things & dressing up for their appointments today.
Special mentions go out to Rudder, one of favourite patients, who is sadly moving away from Nelson today. We will miss Rudder & his crazy, happy energy so much. And also to Coco who is one year old today, Coco is the sidekick to our Purolator delivery guy, Stu. She travels with him every day in his van while he goes about the important business of parcel delivery.
Don't forget to keep your pets in a safe, quiet place indoors tonight so that they can enjoy the evening without the anxiety that is caused by the extra noise & excitement. Keep them away from all candy & decorations. Remember that pets often do not like to be dressed up, they find it uncomfortable because it can restrict their vision, hearing & movement.
Halloween can be lots of fun , just keep your pet in mind tonight & this weekend if you're having a party, so that the entire family can enjoy a good, safe time.

With Halloween coming tomorrow, be sure to keep an eye on your pets. The commotion of trick or treaters and the doorbell ringing throughout the night can make them anxious. It’s a good idea to have them microchipped and to have their proper ID tags on.

Does your pet have diabetes?
Little Charles Montague was diagnosed just last week after his owner noticed his increased thirst & brought him in for some bloodwork to find out what was causing it.
Today he had a FreeStyle Libre monitor fitted . These monitors have changed the game for veterinarians & diabetic pets with continuous glucose monitoring. It has a tiny needle that goes underneath the skin into what’s called the subcutaneous space; that's the same space where we would do a vaccine, for example. And for the pet, it's very comfortable, it doesn't bother them because it's such a tiny needle that we then keep it covered with a t.shirt to prevent it from being knocked off. The monitor provides a real-time reading of the pet’s glucose levels, which helps us to control or adjust insulin doses for pets with diabetes.
Life will be so much easier for Charles Montague & his owner now.

Did you know? Dogs can actually see in colour, just not as vividly as we do. Their colour spectrum is just a bit more limited than ours as they see in shades of brown, gray, yellow and blue. It’s called dichromatic vision, and is similar to humans who experience red- green colour blindness.

We are delighted to welcome Mara and her owner to our hospital. Her owner brought her to see us for a full check to make sure that she was has healthy enough to breed from.
We love meeting new clients especially when they are as striking as Mara, the Main C**n. We simply cannot wait to see what her future kittens look like.

Meet Leroy Black. He's the sweetest, most gentle puppers ever. He looks forward to his visits to see us for health checks & vaccinations, doing the rounds behind the reception desk until we've all given him some love & attention - & multiple Max & Molly's beef liver treats.
Fun fact - his owner thought he was a Labrador cross puppy, but Leroy sure ain't no Labrador, he's going to be huuuuuuge when he's fully grown. You can't tell from these photos, but his paws are the size of a human hand already. 😳 All the more dog to love tho eh Leyroy ?

Technically (pun intended) Tech week is now over, but how could we not include our Head Veterinary Technician, Alex, when we're handing out the appreciation?
Alex has been working as an RVT for 4 years, & has been with us at Selkirk for 1 of those 4 years after training in Ottawa & spending many years volunteering at a wild bird rehab facility before making the big move to B.C.
Alex loves to help your furry, feathered & scaly friends & has a passion for wildlife care, advocacy & rehabilitation. Alex believes that every pet deserves a fear free experience and does whatever they can to keep your pets calm & comfortable.
Alex has a Conure, called Ruby, who has been their companion for over 15 years. They have just purchased their very own home in the Kootenays this week & can't wait to fill it with many, many adopted cats. πŸˆπŸ±πŸˆβ€β¬›
(A huge thanks to our practice manager, Iyla, for arranging delivery of these delicious and beautifully decorated cakes for all of our hard working, dedicated Veterinary Technicians. They really are super heroes & deserve cake every day of the week).

Vet Tech week isn't quite over yet, so today we honour Caroline. 🩺
Caroline graduated with honours from the University of Guelph Ridgetown College back in 2007. Her longing for adventure led to travelling the world with her husband Jay, dog Wicket & cat Beans, (who is now a senior & seen here celebrating her 16th birthday with Caroline at home). While living on different continents, Caroline continued her work as an RVT before coming back to Canada and choosing to settle in the Kootenays in 2014. We were lucky enough to have her join the Selkirk family that same year & she has been the backbone of our Tech team ever since.
Caroline has found her passion helping senior pets and their owners & became certified in hospice & palliative care in 2021.
The compassion , dedication & love that Caroline brings to her job is truly exceptional & we are blessed to have her on our team - even if it is, sadly, for only one day a week. πŸ₯°

We continue to show appreciation for our RVTs during Vet Tech Week by giving a shout out to Elisabeth.
Elisabeth is a newly qualified RVT & also the newest addition to the Selkirk family. She graduated earlier this year from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, returning to her home town to live & work. She has been an avid animal lover as long as she can remember & says that working in the veterinary medicine field satisfies that love, along with her love of science.
Elisabeth brings a sense of fun & good humour with her to work and has a great energy. She says that she learns something new every day and that the other more experienced RVTs are teaching her so much, for which is is very grateful. πŸˆπŸ•

If you notice any of these signs - a strong cough (often with β€œhonking” sound), runny nose, sneezing, loss of appetite or lethargy, keep your dog away from places where other dogs gather. They may have kennel cough, which is contagious.

Today we show our appreciation for Registered Veterinary Technician Jaime, who graduated from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops 3 years ago and has been part of the Selkirk family even before graduation.
Jaime is a gentle & caring soul with a huge heart who chose this as her career path so that she could help improve the lives of all animals, providing comfort & compassion to both pets and their owners.
Her favourite part of her job is seeing just how much people love & cherish their fur babies. She also appreciates that her qualifications allow her to spend her spare time travelling to volunteer at various non-profit spay & neuter clinics, providing any medical care needed for pets in rural communities.
Jaime lives in Nelson with her two dogs, one cat and three tanks full of fish.
If your pet comes to see us for a surgical procedure, it may be Jaime who greets you first thing in the morning as you arrive, so you will know your furry family member will be given the very best of care & huge amounts of love, because thats what Jaime excels at. πŸ₯°πŸΎ

Say hello to Heather , our featured staff member during RVT week. 🩺🐾
Heather is actually a qualified Veterinary Nurse from University in Scotland. She has been part of our Selkirk family for 8 years now, and previously worked in Grand Forks.
She is passionate about helping you & your pet with pain management strategies, including physio & rehab through therapeutic laser treatment. She also enjoys educating pet owners in post-treatment care, as well as offering guidance on nutrition. She holds a Fear Free Elite certification, so excels in reducing fear, anxiety & stress for every pet that she sees.
Heather says that it warms her heart to see the mobility of her clients improve after each laser treatment, it makes her incredibly happy.
Heather has a rescue dog, Raven, who came to her with a broken pelvis & needed a lot of rehab & care, so was most certainly adopted by the right person. She also has 2 senior cats & a love bird who rules the roost.
Thank you Heather for all the love & care you provide to each and every pet that you help here at Selkirk. πŸ₯°
