Now here's a breed of dog that we don't get to see very often in the Kootenays as they are more common in larger cities where apartment-living pet owners seek out smaller breeds.
Meet Teegan the Alaskan Klee Kai , a 7-year-old female who came to us with a fractured left front leg caused by roughhousing with other dogs in the yard. Her regular veterinarian was unable to repair the fracture, but luckily, our amazing and talented Dr. Meyer was able to help and now we all wish Teegan a full and speedy recovery.

🐾The Alaskan Klee Kai is a small-sized companion dog that was developed in the late 20th century to resemble the much-larger Alaskan Malamute or Husky.
🐾The name Klee Kai comes from the Athabaskan words meaning “little dog”.
🐾They are so intelligent that they often become stubborn.
🐾They excel at agility-type sports due to their small size and energy levels.
🐾Unlike Huskies, they are often suspicious of strangers, so make good guard dogs in the home.

When does my pet become senior? The short answer is it really depends.

Cats are generally considered senior after 10 years of age. Dogs on the other hand don’t have a “universal age of seniority” because their breeds differ so much in size. Dogs are believed by experts to have reached their senior status when they reach the last 25 percent of their breeds lifespan. Take a look at this helpful data from the American Kennel Club.

Why are bloodwork and diagnostics important for my pet?

Just like in humans, blood work and diagnostics can help detect health issues early that may not always be obvious from your pet’s physical exam. Take a look at some testing that may be recommended at your pet’s regular checkups.

Can you guess what breed this pair of cuties are ?

Most people assume that they are Norwegian Elk Hounds or Keehonds, but they are in fact a breed call an Eurasia.

They are from the same family as the Elkhound and Keeshond, being a Spitz breed, but are fairly modern in terms of dog breeds, originating approx 50 years ago in Germany. They do enjoy sledding activities but unlike Huskies they are a calm, quiet breed who can be reserved and distrustful of people that they do not know. They form very strong and loyal bonds with their owners and do not like to be apart from their family, so are not suited to being kept outdoors in kennels.

This pair love to travel with their owner and have accompanied her on many camping trips across Canada and even into Alaska.

So now you know all about the Eurasia. 🐾

When ingested, saponins can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive drooling. The severity of your pet’s reaction depends on the amount ingested, so it’s best to visit your veterinarian or closest emergency veterinarian hospital if you notice any of these signs.
