A special post for this Thursday morning❤️...

In January Cody celebrated his 14th birthday with his family, with his recent passing Cody's family wanted to share some special words.

This is Cody. He loves to play with Santa, go for walks on the beach, race around with the zoomies. And cuddle in your lap. Cody is 14 1/2 years and is a Maltese. Cody has 1 tooth, is completely deaf and has lost some of his vision. Cody is such a good boy and loves to be with us at all times. We love him so much. He is such good company and is always up for playing fetch with Santa, a belly rub or a cuddle. Cody is very resilient and loving.

Introducing our Senior Pet of the Month for June- Handsome Harry!

Here are some words from Handsome Harry's owners:

Handsome Harry is 10 years old this month. He was found as a kitten taking shelter under a hosta leaf in the rain. He was brought in as a family pet and has been pampered ever since. He loves to snuggle and sleep under the blankets at bedtime. He is the much loved pet of Maureen Kelly and Dean Griffiths.

Give a warm welcome to our April Senior Pet of the Month- Kona!

Here are some lovely words from Kona's owners:

This is Kona
Kona’s favourite things include playing with her Doggie friends, going on long walks (and watching the squirrels) and taking naps on her favourite couch or bed at home. She also really enjoys any kind of treats, especially cheese.
Unfortunately, her love for treats has given her the nickname “tootsie” because she can clear a room.
Kona is a sweetheart and loves to cuddle with her people and animal friends.

Ticks, Mosquitos and 4DX tests...oh my!

When spring rolls around, you have probably heard one of our staff or veterinarians mention a 4DX test, but what exactly is this? A 4DX is a quick blood test that is conducted in our clinic by our Registered Vet Technicians that checks to see if your dog has antigens to the five tick born diseases and heart-worm disease that are produced by mosquitos.

As temperatures through the winter months become more moderate, ticks are able to be active and feed at temperatures of 4 degrees and above. No matter what season it is, if the weather is warmer, the ticks are out. Our main focus in regards to ticks is the prevention of Lyme disease that is transmitted by the Deer Tick, which we do see in the areas we live in here.

The next thing we look at is Heart-worm disease, which is transmitted by the mosquito. Although it is not common in our region, it does not mean it is not here. Most of this can be found in cases of rescue dogs coming to us from other countries. When left untreated, there is the potential for more cases in our area when mosquitos bite infected dogs and then bite your dog. Who hasn’t seen mosquitos around or in your home?

To sum it up, a 4DX blood test focuses on exposure to diseases that ticks and mosquitos carry. This helps us monitor your dog’s health and to make any adjustments to medication if a positive result comes up. This can include a discussion with the veterinarian or registered vet technician in regards to the Lyme disease vaccination, and medication for the warm months to help with prevention of these diseases.

To find out more about this test, or to inquire about prevention this summer, please contact your local veterinarian to find out more.

We are pleased to announce March's Senior Pet of the Month- Bobbie (AKA- Bob)! Here is some information about this sweet senior from Bobbie's owners:

Bob is very excited to be March's Senior Pet of the Month. Here is a bit more about Bobbie.

Bobbie is 15 years old.
She spent her first 11 years as an indulged farm dog with many acres to patrol. In 2020, she sent her people off for retirement living and came to New Hamburg on a retirement adventure of her own.

Since living in town this old dog has learned many new tricks. Her favorites include stealing pucks from road hockey games, inserting herself into any neighborhood game that involves a ball and convincing people that she needs more treats.

She enjoys long naps, car rides, eating things she shouldn't and getting belly rubs.

With the snow disappearing and spring quickly approaching, it is time to start thinking about getting ready for flea and tick season.
Flea activity is more dependent on motion, so ideally you can expect them all year round. An example of this would be returning to a building (such as a cottage!) and the movement and hustle and bustle can hatch flea eggs that lay dormant during the winter.

Tick activity on the other hand peaks when the temperature is consistently about 4 degrees. Make sure to be mindful when our on hikes or walking through shady leafy areas. Because of this, we recommend starting your pet with flea and tick prevention in the beginning of March.

Here are some interesting flea and tick facts that you might find interesting (or gross!)

Fleas are small parasitic insects that feed off the blood from animals (and people!). They have incredible jumping abilities and can easily jump onto you or your pet as you walk by. Flea eggs can lie dormant for up to a year and hatch based on movement. Flea eggs hatch and turn into larvae, which love to cuddle up in dark and warm places like carpets and pet beddings.

Ticks on the other hand, are a type of arachnid (like spiders!) and are also considered a parasite. They cannot jump like the flea can, but they will wait with their arms outreached on leaves for you or your pet to walk by so they can easily grab on to you. This action is called "questing". They can also detect animal's breath, body odors and can sense heat, moisture, and vibrations.

Make sure to call your veterinarian to talk about flea and tick protection. Also, make sure to check you and your pet thoroughly for fleas and ticks after hikes and walks!

Introducing out February Senior Pet of the Month- Gus!

Here is a little bit more about our sweet senior friend:

Here is Gus,
He loves chasing random birds flying by and making sure he is aware of where all his friends are, (human or not)at all times . He is considered mother Gus to us, he's is very social to everyone he meets. Loves to bark and play with his St. Bernard friend Bruce but will also be gentle and kind to his cat friends.
As long as Gus is around no one is left outside by themselves as he is always the last one to come inside. He loves every kind of weather , rain or shine he will play outside all day.

We are so very happy to announce that New Hamburg Vet Clinic will be celebrating a sweet Senior Pet of the Month. This special pet is drawn at random per month and will be featured here on our page, as well as on our new board that you can see when you come into the clinic!

We are extremely excited to introduce our first Senior Pet of the Month- Marlee!

Marlee's owners wrote some very sweet words about our beloved senior that we would love to share with you:

Meet Marlee - our sweet boy who just turned 9!

These days Marlee moves a little slower and tends to sleep his days away. Always having fancied himself a lapdog 🤣 one of Marlee’s favourite places is snuggled in your lap beneath a blanket with a pillow under his head.

In his prime Marlee was quite the runner (and the very best running partner!) Now he’s content to ‘run’ across the backyard in pursuit of those silly rabbits!

Given his size and love of people-food it is no wonder that Marlee is a counter-surfer! How many times have we caught him on his hind legs eating freshly baked muffins, loaves of bread and buns and plates of chicken off of the counter?! But that’s okay - we can always make more.

Marlee loves strolls around the neighbourhood, boat rides with the wind blowing his ears and car rides. The best car rides are the ones to Tim Horton’s where he gets a dog-timbit at the drive-thru (sometimes two if we’re lucky!)

Above all else there is nothing Marlee loves more than a good belly rub. He doesn’t discriminate either. Whoever you are, if you’re willing he’s on his back before you know it with all paws in the air. And don’t even think about stopping once you’ve started 😉

Marlee makes life better and we are blessed to have him as part of our family.

We love you Marlee❤️ 🐾

As the new year greets us, so does the snow! As we transition into 2024, it is important that we remember to keep ourselves and our furry family members warm during the cold winter months ahead. One of the things we watch out for is frostbite.

Frostbite can occur when we are exposed to cold temperatures for long periods of time, and it is something we want to be mindful of when we are out on our winter walks. When the environment drops below 0, it can reduce blood flow to certain parts of the body on our animals. This includes their paws, tail, ears and the nose.

Changes in the appearance of these parts of the body can indicate that the skin is frostbitten. Although this is rarely life-threatening, it is important that if you notice any of these changes to make an appointment with your veterinarian right away.

Signs and symptoms of frostbite can include:

Discolouration in the skin
Coldness or bitterness in the affected area
Painful when touched
Swelling
Blisters and ulcers
Areas of blackened or dead skin

The best way to prevent frostbite in our furry friends is to limit their outdoor activities in the frigid cold days. Consider dressing them in boots and sweaters to protect the extremities, and make sure your pet is nice and dry before heading out on a walk.

Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn’t feed your cat a saucer of milk or any dairy products. While they may love the taste, most cats are lactose intolerant. So, if you’re planning on leaving out a glass of milk for Santa, make sure to leave the milk someplace inaccessible to your cat. Or just leave the milk in the fridge. As far as we know, cats still can’t open fridges (as much as they may want to) and Santa knows where to find the milk. (He sees everything!)
