November is the perfect time to focus on keeping our older furry friends happy and healthy. Just like people pet’s needs change as they age. Regular wellness testing helps us catch early signs of health issues such as: kidney or liver changes, heart disease, arthritis, and thyroid or metabolic concerns.💉

A simple blood and urine test can give us a good picture of your pet’s health, helping us detect small changes before they become big problems. For dogs and cats aged 7 years and up, we recommend yearly or bi-annual senior wellness testing.

Give us a call to book your pet’s senior wellness appointment this month and help them stay comfortable, active, and thriving through their golden years.🌟

Are you ready for winter? ❄

As much as we don’t want to think about dark days, snow and cold, we need to prepare our horses and barns for the upcoming weather! One of our top winter health concerns is dehydration, as water temperature drops we see horses drinking less which can increase our risk of impaction colic. Here are a few tips to help:

◾Providing salt blocks and having them available at all times
◾Adding 1 Tbsp of salt to morning and evening feed **even if they have access to a salt block
◾Heated water!! There are many options on the market from heated buckets to heaters placed in the water.

For our senior horses here are a few things we like to look at before going into winter.

◾Dental health, ensuring there are no new problems and they can chew their food adequately. If they have fewer teeth or troubles chewing hay, then supplementing with hay cubes to ensure they get the appropriate amount of forage.
◾Adding some extra calories for our harder keepers. An additional 2 flakes of hay, extra scoop of hay cubes or a high quality oil are all great options.
◾Blanketing appropriately based on the individual. If we are struggling to keep weight on, adding additional layers may be helpful.

Do you have questions about your horse's diet, need to schedule an appointment or just a general inquiry? Please call the office at 519-662-1525 or email [email protected]. Happy World Horse Appreciation Day! 🐴

Have you herd?! 🐮😉

Pneumonia is the second most common cause of death in calves.

With the cold weather approaching, your herd may be at a higher risk of developing pneumonia. Some ways to prevent pneumonia include:

◾Vaccinations - consult your veterinarian to discuss a protocol for your farm
◾Frequent cleaning of feeding equipment - bottles and automatic feeders should be cleaned daily with hot soap and water
◾Adequate bedding - calves should be able to fully nest in bedding in order to keep them warm. This allows them to use less of their energy towards thermoregulation
◾Stocking density - overcrowding contributes to increased humidity, ammonia, and airborne bacteria. Ideally have room for 35 square feet per calf
◾Decrease stress - stressed calves have a weaker immune system
◾Ventilation - ensure there are no drafts, while still having proper air flow (at least 6-8 air exchanges per minute during winter months)
◾Colostrum management - having a good protocol for transfer of passive immunity is key, as calves with a failed transfer of passive immunity are more likely to develop pneumonia

Symptoms to watch out for:

◾Changes in breathing (increased respiratory rate or effort)
◾Coughing
◾Abnormal nasal or ocular discharge
◾Decreased interest in food or change in behaviour
◾Ear droop or head tilt
◾Fever or lethargy

Please contact us at 519-662-1525 or [email protected] if you are seeing any of these symptoms on your farm or have any questions.

November is Senior Pet Month!🐶🐱

As our pets get older, they deserve a little extra care and comfort, and one of the most common issues we see in aging cats and dogs is arthritis.

What can you watch for?

Common signs can include: slowing down on walks, hesitating to jump or climb stairs, stiffness after naps or laying down, irritability when touched or picked up.

Even mild arthritis can cause pain, but the good news is, there are lots of ways we can help! Joint supplements, weight management, supportive beds and gentle exercises. If you’ve noticed your senior pet showing any of these signs, give us a call. Our team can help make sure they stay comfortable, active and happy.

🌡Even though the weather is cooling down, fleas and ticks are still active until we’ve had several hard frosts. Don’t forget to give your furry friends their last dose of parasite prevention to keep them protected from those pesky hitchhikers.

With Halloween just around the corner, it's important to take a few simple steps today to ensure your pets stay safe and stress-free during the festivities. Keep all candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free treats containing xylitol, well out of reach, as even small amounts can be toxic to pets Trick-or-treating can mean a lot of doorbell ringing and open doors, so consider setting up a quiet, secure space for your pet away from the noise and excitement. Double-check that their ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they accidentally slip outside. Lastly, be mindful of decorations, keep candles, string lights, and small items out of reach to prevent burns, choking, or other injuries. A little preparation goes a long way in making Halloween a safe and enjoyable night for everyone, including your four-legged family members!
