A Message From Your Horse ~ ๐Ÿฅต

Itโ€™s hot out there folks! Keep your riding to early morning or evening or even better leave riding off the agenda for this heat wave and work on conditioning your horse to accept treatment from your Vet and Farrier ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿซ Horses can acclimate to hot and humid weather conditions; however, air temperature and relative humidity can affect your horseโ€™s ability to cool themselves.

It is recommended to avoid (or use caution when) riding or exercising a horse when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity (%) surpass 150.
For example, if the temperature is predicted to be 92 F with 69% relative humidity, the combination of the two is 161.

When the air temperature + relative humidity is less than 130, horses are very effective at cooling themselves. Between 130 and 150, a horseโ€™s ability to cool themselves is decreased. When the combination is greater than 150, a horseโ€™s ability to cool themselves is greatly reduced, and if the combination is greater than 180, conditions could become fatal if the horse is stressed.

WHEN A โค HEART STOPS, SECONDS COUNT!

No one ever wants to think about the unthinkable.

There are many reasons your dogโ€™s heart may stop. Do you know what they are and do you know what to do?

When a heart stops, seconds count!
โค There is no time for you to think about what to do
โค There is no time for you to call someone to ask what to do
โค There is no time to look up what to do on the internet

There is only time for you to jump into action!

First aid training programs teach you what to do, how you practice during class & continue to practice when you go home.

They build your confidence & muscle memory so that the panic reaction is reduced. First Aid training CAN SAVE lives!

Horse & Hound First Aid 1 is Canine Health Canada certified with Veterinarian reviewed and approved dog first aid programs.

There were two indistinguishable gray horses that portrayed Artax in The Neverending Story. They underwent extensive training by a professional horse handler to accomplish the nearly impossible task of sinking slowly into the mud without any resistance, all the way up to their heads.

It was ensured that the horseโ€™s head never went under the mud in the film. Additionally, by having two horses, they could alternate their presence in the scene while the other horse relaxed. To achieve the desired scene, they utilized a small elevator submerged in the water, gradually lowering the horse deeper and deeper. Once it reached the chin area, they would cut the scene.

This particular scene alone took more than two and a half weeks to film. This scene was intended to evoke sadness as it played a crucial role in the film. Many viewers confess that they have to close their eyes when this scene appears. I empathize with them and acknowledge that it is indeed a sorrowful and challenging scene to watch. However, it was essential for the narrative, as it symbolizes being drawn into darkness, even though, unfortunately, the horse does not survive in the movie.

As a wrap gift, the young actor was given one of the horses and a saddle. Eventually, he decided to leave the horse in Germany with his riding double. The horse enjoyed a wonderful life for over 20 years, residing in a stable and ranch in Germany.

PARASITES ~ UGH ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

The most common parasites of adult horses cause very little stress on the nutritional status of a horse. Just because a horse looks good from the outside, it does not mean it should not be checked for internal parasites ~ as a matter of fact, it is not uncommon for the horse with the best coat and highest body condition score in the herd to also have the highest F***l Egg Count (FEC)!

If your horse has access to pasture, you should assume the animal is exposed to parasites. This spring, talk with your veterinarian to establish a dewormer plan tailored to your horseโ€™s situation that includes at least 1-2 dewormer treatments per year and FEC examinations to monitor treatment efficacy and parasite egg shedding status of individual horses.

Trimming your dogs black toenails doesnโ€™t have to be scary!

When trimming your dogโ€™s black toenails:

โœ… Go slowly

โœ… Hold your dogโ€™s paw firmly but gently

โœ… Position the clippers to cut the nail from top to bottom (not side to side)

โœ… Trim a very small length of the nail, about 1/16th of an inch

โœ… After youโ€™ve made one trim, look at your dogโ€™s nail head-on. If it appears whitish, youโ€™re still in the โ€œdead area.โ€ Itโ€™s safe to trim a bit more into the nail.

โœ… Continue making very small cuts and looking at the end of your dogโ€™s nail after each one. As you get closer to the quick, the center of the nail will appear black, and may eventually look pink right before the quick.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป The trick is to trim a very short bit of nail at a time and stop as soon as the cut surface shows a black center. If you get to the pink, definitely stop!๐Ÿ™ƒ

Thank you to Canine Health Canada for the great post!

One of the most common questions we get in our K9 CPR and emergency first aid courses is โ€˜How much should I exercise my dog?โ€™
The truth is there is no one answer. Every breed is different, so talking to your breeder or veterinarian is definitely a good first start.

That aside, some key factors to consider are:

โœ… Age of your dog
โœ… Overall conditioning of your dog
โœ… Current health concerns
โœ… Is your dog getting other mental stimulation

๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿป that last one is key! So many dog owners think that excessive exercise is the key to calming a hyperactive dog โ€ฆ
But ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป mental stimulation is just as (if not more) important!
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป take your dog on a slow โ€˜sniff-safariโ€™
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป pick up some treat-challenge toys
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป cycle through their toys and/or hide them in different spots around the home
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป spend small intervals teaching your dog new things
