Finally, I can reveal the surprise!

With so many changes taking place at MW this past year, from retiring our JLo from our broodmare band & anticipating the same retirement for our Annie (we will give it one more go next year), this leaves us with only one unrelated mare who can be bred to our stallion Tristans Millenium APHA/CPHA Chestnut Overo Stallion & his paternal half brother, Millenium Made . With one stallion in the later part of his breeding career, and the other just beginning his, you can see how this is not ideal for any of us.

With these thoughts weighing heavy on my mind, I decided that if I stumbled across the right mare, I'd break my promise to myself & bring her home for my two boys. I haven't purchased a horse since bringing Bree home back in 2019, and then Mateo in 2020, but both were under special circumstances ♥️. That statement definitely seemed more impressive until I saw it written out here..🤣😅 but our changes in our broodmare band had me very softly looking to purchase a new 'perfect' mare for us... I'm just like everyone else, I still scan the for sale ads even when I’m not looking to purchase a new horse 😆.

Softly looking or not, as luck would have it, three weeks ago I stumbled across a dream of a mare. Not only was she royally bred, she was in Canada, already a proven mother & 6 panel NN. Did I also mention that she's a BLUE ROAN!? 😍🦄 I then saw her price tag, promptly resigning to simply save her ad (like one does lol) & tried to forget about her.

I'm not sure what exactly it was, but no matter how much I tried to forget about her, I couldn't. Considering I do see a good amount of lovely horses for sale that catch my eye throughout the course of a year, I don't know why, but it was like this one was really just calling to my soul. After nearly a week of constant thoughts of this special mare nagging at me, I decided I just had to send an inquiry. When I found out her story & where she's at currently mentally, it struck me that this must be why she has been calling to me. My mind made up, and with the backing of all of your support (even if you didn't know it 💖), I spent way more than I've ever spent on any horse in my life lol, and purchased this new mare for Tristan, Mateo & I.

I write this all for you, having not yet met her. As I type this, I am actually still eagerly awaiting the update that the hauler is just down the road. So while I don't know her yet, I already feel in my heart that I do. Even if she is behaviorally more imbalanced than described, I just know that she was meant to be with me 💖

Without further ado, please give a warm MW welcome to 'Sleepn My Blues Away' 2014 blue roan AQHA mare. She is sired by the legendary 2 million dollar sire, VS Code Blue (By RL Best Of Sudden & out of the prolific mare Vital Signs Are Good). She is out of the incredibly talented mare Im Behind In Sleep (X Too Sleepy Tpo Zip) who is a Canadian National QH Gold Rush futurity champion/National trail champion & dam of accomplished stallion, My Sleepy Valentine - Emerald Masters WP champion, 2023 Quarter Horse Association of Alberta sire of the year and a well known Alberta sire that has been producing futurity winner after futurity winner the past several years.

This beautiful girl has a pretty busy history, including some limited showing in hand & undersaddle in her youth. She is broke to ride, but has not been ridden in 2 years & sounds like she has some confidence issues along with some trust issues popping up for her as a whole. As you can imagine, I am very excited to meet my new girl & begin building a relationship with her. Not only will this be helpful in assisting her to soothe her concerns with humans, this will be extra helpful for us for when she hopefully foals out a healthy baby early May 2025!

That's right! Our wonderful new girl was also confirmed this past June in foal for a May AQHA/APHA 2025 foal (Her 342 due date is May 3/2025, to be exact) to 2X AQHA World Champion & multi futurity winning sire, Like A Cowboy (X Original Cowboy) for a guaranteed 7 panel NN foal.

Funny enough, I also remember when this beauty was born! I am fb friends with the family that bred/raised her and owned her for the first bit of her life, and I can still remember how awesome I thought she was. I love the times like this where I am reminded how small the world it really is, and how things can turn out even better than you imagined.

2025 is looking to be a pretty exciting year for us, I hope you are are just as excited to join us on this new part of our journey as we are to have you here with us! If you haven't already quit reading my seemingly never ending post....😜 I want to take this time to again thank you all for all of your support of our program and our content. I love you all so very much & always want you to know how much I truly appreciate all of your support and the love that you guys give to me & my herd. I'm so thankful that you are here with us and am so pleased I get to share my 'dream come true' moment with you. I always dreamed of owning a mare like this girl, and now that dream is my reality 😍. In fully realizing that, I hope my realization may also serve as a reminder for you, that your dreams can also come true.

I hope your Wednesday morning is off to a great start!

Why geld your c**t?

This is a common question to see in my comment sections each time I post something about castration. Following the comments on my posts about Palmer's recent castration, I figured there is no better time than now to answer this question from my perspective somewhere it's a bit easier to read.

Why is castration done to the majority of male horses? While for many people the answer to that is of the black & white reasoning of 'poor behavior and or physical attributes' that simply deem them to be not of breeding quality. The truth of it is that the reasons to castrate a c**t are actually fairly multifaceted and go far deeper than just 'not being of quality'.

Generally speaking as a whole, the population of people that own horses, as well as those who want to buy a horse, only have the desire and or ability to both house & handle a gelding or a mare. The large majority of these people are also self aware enough to already know they do not want the hassle of owning an intact male horse (stallion). This also means that the homes that are fully equipped to both responsibly home & handle mature stallions, are few and far between. As someone who sells my foals, for me, this ultimately means it is in my horses best interest (as well as anyone purchasing a horse from me personally), to geld before the horse would go onto their new home.

Now this is not to snub anyone that doesn't want to own a stallion. As an owner of 3 mature stallions, while it is such a rewarding experience, it is truly a labor of love - heavy on the labor part haha. It is far easier to meet the needs of a gelding with less risk & therefore less potential consequences. With that, it's also much more likely for a gelding to live an even higher quality life than a stallion.

The natural desires of a stallion can really take a toll on him both physically and mentally, especially if said desires are not managed in appropriate ways. Stallions are all individuals just like every other horse, but the influence testosterone has over their behaviors as well as their focus are a glaring contrast to that of their gelding counterparts. The same behaviors that often would make for a stallion that would likely sire quite a few foals in the wild (or be a quick end for him, in some stallions cases), can often make for a nightmare stallion to partner with in our domesticated world. Not only does this type of stallion present a nightmare for humans, but having to live the standard domesticated life of a stallion is therefore most likely also a nightmare for him.

As a breeder, the desire of a long and healthy *high quality* life is the number one desire I have for my foals. In castrating them, we remove the desire to breed & therefore the potential mental (and the resulting physical) stress. This makes for easier training & handling, as they are no longer thinking about breeding mares. It of course also ultimately removes the ability for them to produce offspring. With removing their focus on breeding & their ability to sire offspring, they can easily be housed with other horses. With friends being a basic need for all horses, while all horses can be picky about their company - stallions are particularly known for being much more choosy. Stallions left intact often are kept entirely alone, and whether it is because of a behavioral issue or limited suitable companions, this is generally stressful for them. While gelding a horse doesn't always remove more aggressive tendencies (they are still a living being), that same individual on testosterone would likely feel like he grabbed a megaphone.

Castrating c**ts more often than not, to me, is a sign of care & concern for the future quality of life of the horse, the breed they represent & our fellow horsemen. They can be the best behaved boy, with lovely conformation and even a cool color, but if they aren't being invested into with proper management in the right home and or may be bred indiscriminately, castrating them is the best way to both honor & protect everyone involved. I will always be an advocate of castrating the large majority of c**ts - the earlier the better. I wont go into details as to why I prefer to have them done younger again on this post, if you haven't already, I encourage you to scroll my page a few days back to find where I posted about this. 💖

Your c**t can truly be the nicest c**t ever, but he is still a wonderful candidate for becoming a gelding. Gelding him also doesn't mean he wasn't of breeding quality. To me it means you 'read the room' that is our domesticated equine world & know that a good stallion always makes for a great gelding - and there is a ton of wonderful homes that are seeking to give a fantastic life to a great gelding!

I hope you guys had a fantastic Monday - I still can't wait to reveal my surprise!! Only one more day!! Well... a day & a half, but who's counting haha 😉💖

I've been keeping something from you!

While I am not quite ready to entirely reveal this exciting surprise (I don't think it will truly feel real until I see it with my own eyes lol), I can no longer fully contain my excitement! Naturally, I of course want to include you guys in my excitement too!

There is a small hint with the types of photos I chose for this post... Another hint is that I have been talking about very similar subjects recently a fair amount... I'm trying to be careful with how I worded that.... I don't want to ruin the surprise for you!😆💖

What do you think the surprise is? It should be revealed by late Tuesday or early Wednesday of this week - Stay tuned my friends!!

Our Story

Merikle Waters has been operating a small but strong breeding program since mid 2004. Our program was founded on our great, late stallion, Millenium Miracle. Sadly he passed away January 2018. We have retained several of his fillies to ensure the continuation of his line, as well as currently stand his son - Tristans Millenium at public stud. Brandi has been training professionally since 2009, and offers training best summed up as ‘classical dressage/natural horsemanship’, which essentially is clear, thoughtful & kind horsemanship that offers consideration to both the mind and body of the horse as a whole. She believes this balanced approach offers the greatest potential for the best equine partnership available. She has special interest in c**t starting, problem horses, and all around show horses. We also offer riding lessons, horse sales, consignment services, judging services, exhibition services, breeding/foaling services, and assessments/consultations.

Brandi is also the writer of ‘What Your Horse Wished You Knew’, which is available through us in hard copy, or through amazon.com. The kindle version is also available on amazon.ca.
