Long Weekend Session! Up first was Bree and family.
Bree is a very excited young pup who has not had many rules or boundaries to abide by. Last week during our assessment we talked about expectations, what healthy calm interaction with our dogs looks like, and how to meet dogs politely.
What a difference one week of structure can make! When we met with Bree and her family for the first of five training session she was very excited (who doesn't love fishy treats and training!?). However, the structure and respect we have been building at home and on walks shows. Bree was immediately willing to check in with Mom and get her praise and treat for ignoring our training team (dogs and people).
During the session we worked on "Drunk Walking" to practice having Bree follow attentively and keep from getting tangled in our feet. We emphasized and repeatedly practiced and reinforced "Checking In" with Mom and Dad when we see new dogs and people.
We also switched equipment around and practiced with a waist leash for most of the session. We saw a huge improvement by using the waist leash and it got us talking about the kind of energy we share with our dogs when we grip a leash versus when it is attached to us. In this training session it was the difference between "Would you please come with me, if you don't mind?" and "I'm walking, you're walking, let's go have a good time, together!".
The session ended with big success. We as dog trainers, handlers, and owners should take time to acknowledge and remember when things go right. It's not always success and victory. When things aren't going well, it sure does help to remember that things can and will get better, you've already done it! Hold on to those moments when you see them, they pay dividends.
The coolest experience ever!
Cayenne got to meet a piggy at yesterday’s training session by The Pack Dog Training that we got to join. Her name is Annabelle and she is an adorable rescue pig. 🐷🖤
Videos of the actual dog training are in the stories of The Pack Dog Training!
Milo and Voodoo
Came out to see Milo who is a bit scared of people. He has become a very different dog with his mom! A much braver, more curious boy. Here is him and Voodoo playing in his backyard. 😊🖤
End of the walk with little Rosie and a huge step up! She is usually hesitant letting people even look in her direction. We’re taking it slow and letting Rosie decide for herself if she wants to interact.
This is also the first time that she took treats with from new people!
Way to go, Rosie! 🐶
