Is your pup lucky enough to visit a cottage this summer? ☀️🌲🌊
Check out these helpful tips to keep them healthy and happy at the cottage this summer.

1. If your pup is enjoying the water, make sure to remove collars and harnesses prior to swimming. Make sure your pup is 100% dry before putting collars and harnesses back on. This will help reduce their chances of developing hot spots (red, irritated patches of skin that can become infected).
2. Make sure to pay special attention to your pup’s coat when you give them snuggles after a long day of playing at the cottage. Ticks are prevalent in most areas and can be tricky to spot when they’ve latched onto your pup. We recommend keeping your pet on parasite prevention throughout the year to limit risks associated with tick-borne diseases.
3. Vaccinating your pet against Leptospirosis is always a good idea if they visit areas with lots of wild life - like the cottage! Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted through contact with wildlife urine (contaminated soil or water). The Leptospirosis vaccine is the best line of defence for your dogs!

🍊 Meet Clementine 🍊

Clementine, affectionately known as ‘Clemmy’ at Hillside, came to HVC with foot concerns. Both her feet were malformed at hatch and needed correction early on in life. Dr. Hansford and Clemmy’s Owner worked together to create a treatment plan that worked for both the patient and the client. Through weekly bandaging and monitoring, Dr. Hansford was able to correct her feet and improve her health long term.

Early intervention and ongoing support when your pet needs it most are important factors in ensuring a long, happy, and healthy life for your pets.

And remember! Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, and other creepy crawlers don’t respect fences. So even if your pet only really goes in your backyard, they are still at risk of getting parasites. Give us a call if you’d like to order any prevention or if you have any questions!

Aliana is a Veterinary Assistant and one of our Health & Safety operators here at Hillside. Aliana graduated from Seneca College in 2019 with a diploma in Behavioural Sciences. Aliana has worked as a Veterinary Assistant for 4 years.

Alexis is one cold our Veterinary Assistants here at Hillside. Alexis graduated in 2020 from McMaster University with a degree in Life Sciences, specializing in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Animal Behaviour. Alexis graduated in 2022 from Seneca College with a certificate in Veterinary Assisting. Alexis plans on returning to Seneca College this year to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. Alexis is Fear Free certified in small animals. She is also certified in Mental Health first aid. Alexis has 7 years of experience in the veterinary industry.

Alexis’ hobbies include; snowboarding, playing video games, and baking.

Natassia is one of our Veterinary Assistants here at Hillside. Natassia graduated in 2018 from Guelph University with a Bachelors of Bio-Resource Management, majoring in Equine Management. Natassia also graduated from Guelph University in 2024 with a Masters of Science majoring in Population Medicine/Epidemiology. Natassia plans to pursue a Veterinary Medicine degree at the OVC with an interest in Large Animals/Bovine medicine.

Natassia’s hobbies include; wake surfing, horseback riding, and trivia nights.

In 2010, Lisa continued her schooling and is now wildlife certified and certified as a canine rehab assistant.

Victoria Day fireworks are fast approaching. Many pets suffer from firework induced anxiety during the long weekend.

Some common signs of anxiety that your pet can present are: yawning, panting, lip licking, hiding, cowering, shaking, trembling.

How you can combat anxiety at home: ensure your pet is extra tired prior to the event, play familiar music or tv channels during the event, remain calm & keep them busy with a command, toy or treat!

Anti-anxiety products like zlykene, composure pro, therabites & thundershirts are all available through myvetstore.ca and in clinic!
