- Keep candy (especially chocolate) out of reach.
- Create a quiet, safe space away from the hustle and bustle of the front door.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can occur in both animals and humans.
Leptospirosis is most commonly transmitted through contact with infected wild life urine. Your pet does not have to come into contact with an infected animal, but simply sniffing around in potential infected urine.
Possible Leptospirosis in dogs symptoms include; fever, refusal of food, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, stiffness, depression.
Talk to your Veterinarian about the Leptospirosis vaccine and if this is something that fits your pets lifestyle.

Did you know that baby teeth, or deciduous teeth, don’t always fall out on their own?
When an adult tooth starts growing in but the baby tooth stays put, it can lead to overcrowding, leaving room for debris to get trapped and increasing the risk of dental disease.
We usually spot this during your pet’s spay or neuter procedure. If those baby teeth are still present, we recommend removing them while your furry friend is already under anesthesia for their surgery to keep their smile healthy!🤍

🐶 Have a new puppy in your home? 🐶
Being consistent with a few simple tips can help you successfully housetrain your new puppy.
* Supervision is key - Try to ensure that your puppy is never out of sight. If you are unable to directly supervise, make sure your puppy is in a secured and safe space (ie; crate).
* Ensure you are cleaning thoroughly after your dog has gone to the bathroom somewhere they shouldn’t. Dogs have a great sense of smell, better than ours! So even if the area smells clean to you, your dogs may still be attracted to the same spot.
* Puppies less than 4 months old urinate more frequently. Try to get them on a schedule to take them out regularly.
* Reward your pup with high value treats each time they urinate or have a bowel movement outside.
* Avoid punishment. Punishment increases the likelihood that your pup may stop eliminating in front of you but they may still soil in other places. Using punishment will cause your pet to see you as unpredictable.

Is your pup lucky enough to visit a cottage this summer? ☀️🌲🌊
Check out these helpful tips to keep them healthy and happy at the cottage this summer.

1. If your pup is enjoying the water, make sure to remove collars and harnesses prior to swimming. Make sure your pup is 100% dry before putting collars and harnesses back on. This will help reduce their chances of developing hot spots (red, irritated patches of skin that can become infected).
2. Make sure to pay special attention to your pup’s coat when you give them snuggles after a long day of playing at the cottage. Ticks are prevalent in most areas and can be tricky to spot when they’ve latched onto your pup. We recommend keeping your pet on parasite prevention throughout the year to limit risks associated with tick-borne diseases.
3. Vaccinating your pet against Leptospirosis is always a good idea if they visit areas with lots of wild life - like the cottage! Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted through contact with wildlife urine (contaminated soil or water). The Leptospirosis vaccine is the best line of defence for your dogs!

Have any questions? We are only a phone call away at 905-895-6065.

🍊 Meet Clementine 🍊

Clementine, affectionately known as ‘Clemmy’ at Hillside, came to HVC with foot concerns. Both her feet were malformed at hatch and needed correction early on in life. Dr. Hansford and Clemmy’s Owner worked together to create a treatment plan that worked for both the patient and the client. Through weekly bandaging and monitoring, Dr. Hansford was able to correct her feet and improve her health long term.

Early intervention and ongoing support when your pet needs it most are important factors in ensuring a long, happy, and healthy life for your pets.
