The True “Tail” of Pet Insurance
Insurance is something that you always want to have but never need to use. Pet insurance is, like typical insurance, a monthly payment but can make all the difference in your ability to help your pet if an unexpected illness were to occur.
I’d like to share a story about my own dog Winnie in which pet insurance made a very scary experience for us a little easier as we didn’t have to think about the costs of procedures or testing to save our little girl.
Winnie was a healthy 3 year old Mastiff/Lab mix. She has had allergies all her life which we had been managing with multiple different medications. When she started scratching inside her mouth about a year ago we had attributed it to allergies. When the scratching wasn’t getting better with medications we thought we should perform a dental cleaning and dental radiographs on her just in case there was an issue inside her mouth. We did the cleaning and radiographs and she required 4 teeth to be extracted. Winnie did fantastic throughout her procedure and even the day after I remember thinking this was the best she had recovered after an anesthesia.
Three days after the dental procedure, like any normal day, I went to pick her up from her grandparents (thanks for pet sitting mom and dad!). She had a great day, nothing out of the norm, but as soon as I got there she kept wanting to lay down and then she began drooling and panting. She would take a few more steps and then want to lay back down, which is very odd behavior for our rambunctious ball of energy. I picked up my husband and we immediately took her to the Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic. Thankfully they were able to see her right away, but as with most emergency clinics and referral hospitals a deposit was required before any testing could be performed.
Fortunately for us, we have had pet insurance for her since she was a puppy so we were able to agree to all of the testing they needed without hesitation. They took her for x-rays, blood work and a quick ultrasound, all of which looked mostly normal, she had a little bit of fluid in her abdomen but nothing too concerning at the time. Winnie was admitted for monitoring just to be sure she was alright, and my husband Brad and I went home. Our house wasn't the same without our girl tearing around, but we knew she was in the right place.
About 3am my phone rang and my stomach dropped. Nobody delivers good news at 3am. It seemed that despite receiving pain medications Winnie was not improving and they wanted to do a repeat ultrasound which showed more fluid in her abdomen. They looked at the fluid from her abdomen under the microscope and it was determined that she was septic, meaning the fluid that was in her abdomen was leaking from her gastrointestinal tract. This condition is frightening, and life threatening if not treated quickly. Our sweet baby girl needed surgery and needed it fast. The Veterinarian at the emergency clinic called around to all of the referral hospitals in the area, luckily the 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital was able to take her. Who would have thought that the combination of her allergy medication and pain control medication would have lead to a medical emergency like this? We picked her up and headed straight to 404.
Upon arrival we spoke with a doctor who informed us her prognosis was 50/50. In the back of my mind I had already prepared for this news, but to hear it out loud was devastating to Brad and I. Winnie was 3 years old, she had barely lived. There were so many more squirrels to chase, lakes to swim in, cuddles to give and countless more sloppy kisses. Without question we knew we had to try everything to save her and consented to surgery.
Now we all know the cost of Veterinary Care is expensive. Add in a referral hospital and emergency surgery, and these costs can simply be unattainable for a lot of families. Again, our Insurance kicked in and we only had to cover a small portion of a $6800 bill. We would do anything for our pets, but it would have been tremendous stress to try and find $6800 going spare in the middle of the night.
Winnie got through her surgery, and we were continually updated by the team at 404. I knew the next few days were critical for her, as they needed to ensure her surgical site didn't dehisce, meaning it didn't break down internally and open back up again. She wasn't out of the woods yet, and all we could do was wait and hope.
The next few days weren't without complications, and required multiple visits up to see her, coaxing her to eat on her own. Just under a week later we were able to take Winnie home. We were so excited to see our girl, but at this point we still hadn't received a final bill, and I was anxious at what we were looking at financially. An additional $200 was all we had to pay, what a relief.
Those few days were such an emotional roller coaster. We are so incredibly appreciative to the staff at Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic and to the 404 Veterinary Emergency Referral Hospital. They worked tirelessly to save our girl and we are forever grateful to them.
Without pet insurance we would have spent over $13,000, but in the end our expenses were only $3,000. I have worked in the pet health industry for 14 years and Winnie is my first pet that I signed up for pet insurance. Going forward I will always get pet insurance for my pets. Over the 3 years of her life we’ve been able to put in claims for her allergies, a mast cell tumour removal surgery, her dental procedure and the surgery mentioned above. The monthly cost is well worth the relief my husband and I felt knowing that we could do whatever it took to get our girl cared for and brought back home.
Lindsay Golding, RVT at Upper Canada Animal Hospital and proud owner of Winnie, the sweetest pup you could ask for!

Please be aware that entry requirements are changing on August 1st, 2024 for pets going into the US. Please be sure to visit https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs-entering-us-after-august-1.html for the new requirements.
We are still learning what the requirements will be as well. From what we know so far, ALL dogs will need to be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccine and signed veterinary documents. We will keep you informed as we find out.

In honour of epilepsy awareness week, here are a few tips to keep in mind if your pet ever experiences a seizure…

🐾 Stay calm
🐾 Avoid restraining your pet and keep your hands away from their mouth (during a seizure their muscles tense and they may unknowingly bite)
🐾 Keep them away from pools, stairs, or anything in the area that they can hurt themselves on
🐾 When to go to the ER: seizure lasts longer than 3 minutes, more then 2 seizures within 24 hours, or are unresponsive after a seizure
