Please keep an eye out for Sierra! She is a 2 1/2 year old Dutch Shepherd with a brindle hair pattern. Sadly she’s been missing since Saturday, where she took off from East West line and Lakeshore area of Niagara on the Lake. The Lincoln County Humane Society has been contacted.

She is a sweet lady but is quite nervous. Historically she’s enjoyed peanut butter and liver treats.

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them!

Cars hold in the cold, much like refrigerators, and leaving a pet unattended for extended periods of time puts them at risk for hypothermia, frostbite, illness, and even death. Under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act, ‘it is against the law to leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle in a manner that endangers the health or safety of the animal’. The Ontario SPCA mentioned that they ‘investigate thousands of complaints about animals left unprotected from winter weather’ every year.

What is hypothermia? It is a serious condition that occurs when the body temperature is significantly lower than normal.

Who’s at risk? Senior and young dogs, toy breeds, short coated breeds, small and skinny dogs

Signs of hypothermia: shivering, pale gums, lethargy, muscle stiffness, low blood pressure, cold limbs, weak pulse

What to do if you suspect hypothermia? Remove them from the cold, wrap them in a warm dry blanket/towel/clothing and use your body warmth to gently warm them. Then get them to the vet immediately!

As much as your dog may love car rides, the risks of leaving them unattended are simply not worth it.

Meet Ruby! She came to us for surgery back in August of 2023 for a TTA procedure to repair her torn CCL and according to her mama “She is now thriving and will be 10 soon!”
