It was a sad day yesterday. We said goodbye to Twister (aka Twisty, aka Mr Twister, aka Doofy) 😢

Born with a cleft pallet and scoliosis, he really didn't have the best start in life. We will never forget when he was born, you could right away tell something wasn't right. He had quite the crooked spine, but all Wayne said was "he'll be ok, he's just a little twisty". Little did we know, he had a cleft pallet and wouldn't be able to eat on his own. We didn't put a collar on him, or take pictures of him, because we really didn't know what was going to happen to him. From learning to tube feed, to the many vet visits, two cleft pallet surgeries, Twister was a trooper every step of the way.

He was always Mr Popular with all the puppy families. Everyone wanted some love from Mr Twister because that is all he wanted to do - love, and he loved hard. He was the most loving, happy go lucky pup we've had. And we couldn't have asked for more for him. Every extra moment we got to spend with him was a bonus from day 1, and we will never forget any of it.

You were a special boy Twister. Love you buddy! We will be missing you

We lost our OG on January 16, 2023. Our big red boy. The one who started it all.

I was putting off this post because I knew it was going to bring back the tears. I didn't think I had any left...

We couldn't have asked for more in a dog than Bruce. He was our first Boerboel and we wouldn't be where we are today if he hadn't made us fall in love with the breed like he did. Mark Fallis, we can't thank you enough for entrusting us with Bruce. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

100% applicable to the Boerboel breed!

This breed is not for everyone. Those who are interested in the breed need to do their homework and be ready and willing to accept the responsibility of the nature of this breed. We do our best to ensure we communicate this to all our potential families but we also expect any potential families to also do their own homework.

They are an AMAZING breed, but they do not come without effort

And then there's these two. Gus tolerates some moderate snuggling but eventually will get up and remove himself. Allie on the other hand LOVES to snuggle...human or dog she doesn't care 🤣 Can't believe how big she is at almost 16 months old...we may need a bigger bed if she keeps on growing...

It's not very often Bruce will share his bed with another dog. But every now and then Daisy seems to win him over ♡ Maybe he is getting slightly more tolerant in his elder years...or just doesn't care as much anymore 🤣

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

While relevant for every breed, we really cannot stress this enough for Boerboels!

This breed is not to be taken lightly; they need leadership, they need rules, and they need accountability. Love and affection are only small pieces of the puzzle that creates a well rounded and mentally/emotionally/physically solid companion! This breed will NEVER stop pushing their boundaries, and will take advantage if given the slightest opportunity to do so. Boerboels, and all the joys and hardships that come with them, are not for everyone, so don’t make this decision lightly!

We do our absolute best to set our puppies up for success, -to not only survive but to thrive!- but it is up to our puppy families to continue to build on the foundation we set. We want what is best for our dogs and puppies, and we truly hope that we find families that carry on our commitment and ideals and mold that puppy into the best dog it can be❤️

To this end we are always available, day or night! We want you to check in, send us pictures and updates, ask your questions regardless of how silly you might think it is. If we can’t guide you in your specific concern or question we will do our best to set you up with someone who can! This is a relationship that is built with the puppy but also with US. We will never stop caring about that puppy even after it leaves us. That's our commitment to you as a breeder.

Please don't do any dog (not ONLY a Boerboel) a disservice by only giving them love and affection. It is not only in your best interest, but also the dogs' ❤️
