Clarity and energy matters!!

Clarity and energy matters!!

Friday Fun Fact:

Your dog can hear 4x farther than you can—and can pinpoint where the sound came from in less than 1/100th of a second.

That means the second you open the cheese drawer, they already know:
• What it was
• Where it came from
• And whether it’s worth getting up for

Dogs can detect frequencies you’ll never hear.
They pick up on the crinkle of a bag, the rattle of a leash, or the click of your keys—before your brain even catches up.

But that sensitivity isn’t just for snacks.
It’s why fireworks can rattle them.
It’s why yelling doesn’t help.
And it’s why calm, consistent cues matter more than you think.

Your voice is a tool.
Use it with clarity. Use it with purpose.
They’re listening—closer than you know.

Absolutely!!

Absolutely!!

Due to unfortunate messaging over the years, coupled with a lack of knowledge, and compounded by the human tendency for denial/delusion, what should be obvious and commonly accepted is anything but.

A few of the messages:
-There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Wrong.
-Any dog can be “fixed” if you’ll get your energy right. Wrong.
-Every dog should be saved. Wrong.

The knowledge gap:
-We have a chaotic house, with lots of kids running all over, and we adopted a highly nervous but “sweet” herding breed. Bad.
-My dog challenges everyone in our family, and has bitten us all, but is great with my trainer. Bad.
-We got a guarding/working breed so it can protect the family, even though we’ve never had a dog before. Bad.

A bit of denial:
-He only bites us when we kiss/dance/move too fast/leave the house/vacuum because he had a traumatic early life. Delusion.
-She’s guards her spot on the couch, her toys, and her food, and will bite us if we get too close, but it’s only because she never had things of her own before. Delusion.
-He always growls at or bites my husband, but I’m sure he was abused by a man before I adopted him. Delusion.

Can people improve? Absolutely. Can dogs improve? Almost always. Does that mean that all fits can be made healthy and happy, or are wise? Nope. People and dogs come in many flavors, and many of these flavors work wonderfully well together, some work with certain other flavors, and some (human and dog) don’t work well at all. It’s a sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. We should be choosing the dogs we share our lives with based on an honest and informed assessment of who we are, what our lives look like, and what dog—both breed and individual personality—fits that reality best.

Ignore the silly messages, do your homework, and lose the denial.

Fairytales in dog land often end up as nightmares.

Yes! This so true! I see so many posts from trainers that are mad at other trainers or trying to outshine other trainers and it just hurts the industry. There are plenty of dogs needing help and we don’t need to compete with each other. I would love to see collaborating rather than competing!!

As dog trainers, we are held to much higher standards than regular dog owners. We are expected to behave in a professional manner not just with our clients, but in our personal lives, as well. Every time we step out of our homes – picking kids up from school, grocery shopping, meeting a client, etc. – we are representing both our business and ourselves. So, when we are seen on social media taking part in flame wars about different training methods and ideologies, we are not inspiring confidence in the public, we are discouraging them – and that can have disastrous consequences for the dogs who desperately need us.

Unless someone is genuinely abusing animals (e.g. Dog Daddy, to name just one), it is in our and our clients' best interests to work in our own lanes and keep our attention on the dogs in front of us. Yes, it's hard to do sometimes; we're human, and sometimes, we see things that offend and anger us so deeply that it feels almost impossible to hold our tongues. But, we have to remember that the public is always watching us, whether we're online or out in the real world, and deciding whether or not we're the right choice for them and their dogs.

Have a great day, and remember to stay calm and lead on.

So true…well said my friend!!

So true…well said my friend!!

“Reactive dogs just need to be shown that other dogs are okay.”

We hear this a lot—and it’s only part of the story.

The truth? Reactive dogs don’t learn to feel safe around other dogs by being forced into interactions or flooded with triggers.

They learn by being supported.

🧠 First, we teach coping skills at a distance—where your dog feels safe and can actually learn.
💚 Then, we slowly build confidence and emotional regulation over time.
🐾 Only after that foundation is in place do we work closer to other dogs—and even then, the goal is neutrality, not friendship.

You don’t need your dog to love every other dog. You need a dog who can feel in control and supported in tough moments.

Because a dog who learns to stay calm and confident around triggers?

That’s a dog who gets to live a bigger, freer life.
