Ear mites are common parasites in cats, especially in kittens and outdoor cats. Highly contagious, they spread through close contact with infested animals. While they cause significant irritation, ear mites are usually not life-threatening; however, untreated infestations can lead to serious complications like hearing loss. Symptoms include thick, dark ear debris, ear pain, head shaking, scratching, head tilting, strong odors, hair loss around the ears and eyes, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Kittens often contract mites from their mothers, and outdoor cats are at higher risk. If you suspect ear mites, consult a veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. Preventive measures, including regular check-ups and monthly treatments, can help keep your cat healthy.
