Daisy will forever be missed. Truly one of the kindest and purest souls. 🌼

Soar high, sweet angel Daisy. Watch over us on the trails from up there ❤️🌈

We lost a beautiful soul over this weekend, Hunter, who we had the pleasure of walking for so many years. 🌲🐾
Hunter would be eagerly waiting for his walk (with his little bro Ozzie by his side!) and would pull you to the car, almost unable to contain his excitement to say hi to his friends. Hunter was a very special dog, you could even say a miracle dog, surviving a almost two full years after his cancer diagnosis.
Thank you for letting us love you and we miss you already Hunter.
Fly high, sweet boy. 🌈🐾❤️

These kind of posts just don’t get easier each time we have to write one. But it is a reality and a part of our job. The dogs take pieces of our hearts with them when they go. ❤️‍🩹

This is Jade and Pippin! A border collies personality is characteristically alert, energetic, hardworking, and smart. They learn quickly- so quickly that it's sometimes difficult to keep them challenged. This breed likes to be busy!

Backstory:

The Border Collie was originally developed in Scotland and thrived in the region on the border of Scotland and England. The word “collie” is a Scotch word used to describe sheepdogs. Because this breed flourished in the border region, it was christened the “Border Collie.”

World records:

A Border Collie named Chaser has been widely recognized as the world's most intelligent dog; she knows the names of more than 1,000 objects. Another Border Collie, named Jumpy, holds a Guinness World Record for dog skateboarding: 100 meters in less than 20 seconds. Striker, a Border Collie from Quebéc City, set the canine record for rolling down a manual car window. In 2008, a Border Collie-mix named Sweet Pea set a record for dog balancing; she balanced a can on her head and walked 100 meters in only 2 minutes and 55 seconds.

Fun fact:

Border Collies stare or 'give the eye' because that is what they are bred to do. These highly intelligent, herding dogs have been trained to manage herds of sheep with their intense stare. This stare is so intimidating it can actually control the flock of sheep.

Border collies are incredible dogs! They don't only work hard but they also are great cuddlers and wonderful companions.

Happy Monday! Here is another heartwarming rescue story and this week we introduce you to Kimi! We love stories like this to propel us through the week ahead and to remind you that anything is possible! Here is her story told by her mom Ann.

“I would love to share how much Kimi has progressed and settled into her new life in Canada.

She came to us from Korea through a rescue agency, Forever Freed Rescue of BC. We were told she was about 2 years old and was in a high kill shelter and due to be euthanized just before she was rescued. We don't know what her previous history was but it appeared to us that she was probably a stray. She didn't seem to know at all what to do in the house, how to get in the car or even how to tacke stairs.

She was very anxious and stressed when she arrived. She was frightened by everyone and everything. She paced constantly, wouldn't eat, chewed her leash to shreds and cowered if we came near or bolted off. She wouldn't let my husband touch her for around a month. When we took her outside (after coaxing her to get on the leash) she pulled constantly and would lunge at other dogs - very exhausting!

I will say here how very grateful we are to NSDW for taking her on when she was such a challenge. I know that Sharon took her for walks on her own, initially not going in the car as Kimi was too frightened, and then lifting her into the car when she felt more confident.

We were told about the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months expectation for settling in for rescue dogs, but Kimi took much longer than that due to her severe anxiety. After 4 months Kimi was still very nervous of people, especially men, and got easily startled. At that point, we could not imagine her ever being calm enough to be comfortable with other people and dogs and certainly never off leash! Even with us, she easily became wary and on edge.

Gradually, with training, patience and love from us, and also you great people at NSDW!, Kimi began to calm down, grow in confidence and trust, and feel at home. She is now a gorgeous, calm, loving dog who can't get enough cuddles and love. She adores going for her walks and will happily play with her fur buddies, especially in the mud! We are so happy to have her!

As I wrote this, I felt myself well up a bit just thinking of how much she has changed and what a wonderful dog she is. Thank you again to all you have done to help her get to this point.”

Most of the time when dogs bark excessively they are bored and aren’t getting enough mental and physical exercise.
If you can get your dogs’ attention right before they start to bark then you can reward them for compliance. (The reward might be a high value treat, pats, ball, squeaky toy, etc) But make sure not to give the reward while they are barking, sometimes it’s very time sensitive, but you’re letting them know that the thing they are doing is what’s keeping them from receiving the reward.
To get your dogs attention say “Look at me”, guiding the reward close to your eyes. Once they make eye contact without barking then you can reward them. Try and count to five and then ten while holding eye contact, if they start to bark grab their attention again with the command “look at me” and start over. Always rewarding them at the end of each successful count.

How to stop a dogs barking while someone is knocking at your front door: Ask someone in your household to knock at the door for training purposes. Remember to start small (one or two knocks) gradually increase difficulty, acknowledge small victories and be consistent! Start at one knock and work your way up. Guide your dog with a treat away from the door getting them to look at you. Once they are calm reward with a treat. This is a difficult one to tackle so don’t get discouraged, try to keep your dogs attention and remember to be consistent!

For bonus points you can say “yes” when you reward them with a treat.

For those of you who have dogs that bark at home while your at work make sure to play a game of fetch for 20/30 minutes before leaving. If you have a high maintenance dog you may have to exercise them in the morning and possibly in the afternoon for the next several months. High maintenance dogs are not easily satisfied so you will have to put in a little extra work.

If you notice that your dog isn’t very responsive to the treats and continues barking that means you are asking them to do something that they are not yet prepared for. You need to take a step back on your training and make those drills a little bit easier for your dog in the meantime slowly working your way up.

With a little bit of patience and kindness you can achieve anything! We hope this has helped and if you’d like to tag us on Instagram with an update on your training we would love to see!

It’s time for another rescue story! This is Siggi, he is well loved by our staff here at NSDW and we are so happy we get to spend our days with him. Here’s his story told by his owner Alli 🙂.

“Siggi was born somewhere in east Texas, and he came into my life through a wonderful group of amazing volunteers at Big Dog rescue project, which works around the US and places dogs with families in Texas, the PNW and the eastern US.

These volunteers rescued Siggi (though he went by a different name back then) from a high kill shelter just two hours before he was scheduled to be euthanized. Not much is known how he ended up there; he was rehomed by his original owner with a “friend” who then abandoned Siggi shortly after, and refused all attempts at contact for an answer. By the time I picked him up at Seattle airport; he had been through four homes (including the kill shelter and rescue kennel) at the tender age of 10 months.

When he came to me, he was very underweight, had a severe giardia infection, and was both desperate for attention and love and scared of contact. It took about 2 months of very slow, patient positive reinforcement for him to allow me to put a harness on him, and another couple months before he would let me towel him off without snapping at me. Treating an eye infection in his first weeks was a stressful ordeal for both of us: it required daily trips to the vet to enlist the help of two vet techs to hold him steady while I held his head and put them in.

More than a year later, Siggi now patiently waits for me to towel off his paws, looks at me lovingly to receive his eyedrops to help with seasonal allergies, and can never get enough belly rubs. A DNA test revealed he’s actually 100% border collie (explains A LOT), and we’re working on curbing his very high herding instinct around joggers, bikes, kids, anything that moves really. North Shore dog walkers has been PHENOMENAL in helping move his training along. His favourite thing in the world is chasing and playing with other dogs in the forest, and after an early setback getting kicked out of doggy daycare for being a bit much, he’s learned to play well with even the smallest of puppies. He’s a delightfully complicated little weirdo, always up for adventure, more than a little neurotic, but I couldn’t imagine a better best buddy and adventure partner.”

Here’s to many more hikes Siggs, you are awesome! :)

This is Ziggy our newest member! Ziggy is an Irish water spaniel with the best hairdo we’ve ever seen! Now Ziggy is a bit shy but here at NSDW we understand that he may just need a bit more attention and that’s ok! We like to give shy dogs a safe space to sniff, listen and explore their surroundings. It’s about giving them the confidence to be themselves. Once Ziggy ventured into the water and befriended a very big stick I could see his personality show and how comfortable he was with me and the other dogs. Ziggy is wonderful and we are thrilled to have him be apart of Northshore dog walkers!

We would love to share some of the incredible stories of the rescue dogs that we have the honor of walking. Today we share Gracies story, a hard story but a beautiful one at that. Heres the full story from her mom Pam.

“Gracie is from Northern Manitoba. There are MANY dogs that are rescued from really sad situations. There are local volunteers that keep their eyes open for dogs that are in bad shape. Gracie’s brother Sam was on the list to be picked up and when the volunteers got there to get him, they noticed another dog in deplorable shape. They asked if they could also take this dog too and the ‘owner’ said sure. Although they are ‘owners’ they do nothing for the dogs. They do not feed them, or shelter them and we are quite sure they beat her. We also know that other dogs attacked her (she has scars and rips in her ears consistent with dog fights). Gracie, who at this time was named Bliss by the rescuers was not expected to survive the night. The emergency vet offered to take her home as she was pretty sure they would loose Gracie that night. She was severely malnourished and was basically one big weeping blister (similar to having 3rd degree burns all over her body). When Gracie did not die that first night, the vet thought wow! But she was pretty sure that Gracie would pass the following night. And so it went for a bunch of days when the vet finally said..OMG this little dog has an enormous will to live…maybe she will make it!

From there the long painful rehab started. They had to treat her like a 3rd degree burn victim…very very painful water therapy and debriding (scraping the weeping puss and scabs off). It would have been excruciating for her. Many many people came together to raise money for her vet treatment as it was long and very expensive. She was in care for 3 months (from 5 months old to 8 months). She slowly got better and the thing that stuck out was how resilient and sweet she was through the whole painful ordeal. The organization that rescued her is called Manitoba Animal Alliance and they are angels. I follow them on Facebook and every day they are saving sweet souls from terrible situations.

My sister was connected with them and from the first time she saw Gracie (Bliss) she knew in her heart that if she lived, she was destined for us! There is a cute clip of Gracie/Bliss on Global News Winnipeg on the adopt a pet segment…..she is hilarious!! She basically gets right on top of the announcer and the girl is laughing soooo hard!! It is adorable!

What a difference…Gracie so wanted to live! And we are so so lucky she ended up with us!”

We are so lucky and grateful that we get to show Gracie the love she deserves and the great outdoors.

Hey everyone! We thought it would be a good idea to introduce you to the people taking such good care of your pups. We have a pretty incredible team who work very hard to bring you the best service they can. It is important to us that you feel safe and secure knowing your dog is in great hands. Here are a few facts about Matt, one of our contractors:

Matt once lived in a hole in the ground that he dug for two weeks while he trained in advanced survival skills 😳 impressive!

As a boy Matt lived in the Amazon jungle and swam with piranhas.

He’s been on every continent except for Antarctica.

Matts favourite feeling is awe. He loves experiencing beautiful new places that he has never seen before.

In our opinion this shows that Matt is well rounded, smart, adventurous, inquisitive and has a big heart.

Have a wonderful Thursday night!
And we will see you all tomorrow.

Have you ever seen a dog with a muzzle? What is your first thought typically? “Oh that dog must be aggressive!”? Well that’s not always the case!

Muzzle’s don’t have to be scary or unpleasant for your dog, and they can be incredibly helpful in a variety of different situations! Embrace them! :)

The use of a muzzle should always start with positive training. Basic positive reinforcement training can help get them used to their new fancy head gear! We find that the comfy basket style muzzle’s are popular, and they can be used as a safeguard to prevent problems.

Muzzle’s can be helpful for dogs who like to consume everything and anything that they see out on the trails. Yes, some dogs do love to eat poop…and a lot of it! It can help deter the vet bills and runny bums.

If they are prone to being grumpy with other dogs, we manage that by using a muzzle. To make it less stressful for all and reduce the risk of harm and keep everyone safe! :)

It’s time to appreciate muzzles for all the good things they can do for dogs. We owe it to our dogs to set them up for success! Praise the owners and their dogs who have taken the time to dedicate to muzzle training!

Dogs are small rays of light captured on Earth for a short time to brighten our days.

We lost a very special member of our pack on January 31st. Oscar was so loved, and had the sweetest soul. He always brightened our day having him out on the trails, and was eager to share his love for all 2 legged and 4 legged friends alike. We will miss him dearly.

Fly high sweet angel Oscar. 🐾❤️🌈

“Hi I’m Chloe!
I’m sweet, I’m cute and I’m well behaved! My walkers say I’m the full package. :)
I love to play with my fur friends on trail, and find the best stick in the whole forest to take back to the van with me. Sticks = life😍. When I get home, after being dried off, I like to grab the towel and run around the house so my walkers have to chase me. I can’t get enough of them, and they can’t get enough of me. ❤️”
