Wilke Canine Wellness I adopted my sweet SPCA rescue dog named Charlie in December, 2015. He’s an energetic three year old husky/lab mix and my partner in crime.

Adopting Charlie and consistently working with him has not only taught me a lot but has inspired me to create Wilke Walks, the only dog walking company on the North Shore solely dedicated to private & ta

ilored walks for other reactive & misunderstood dogs just like him! With all my previous years of dog walking/sitting experience, I was certain I knew everything there was to know about dogs. Soon after adopting Charlie I realized I had a lot to learn. Adopted at one and a half years old Charlie had zero socialization skills with other dogs and absolutely no training. Just going for a simple walk around the neighbourhood was beyond frustrating and at times scary. I had been pulled to the ground on multiple occasions from his outburst of uncontrollable barking and lunging. During our walks I became paranoid and full of anxiety at the thought of running across a dog, squirrel or anything that moved too quickly. It felt like the dream and vision I had for myself and this sweet dog was suddenly an unrealistic fantasy. I had envisioned taking my dog on off leash hikes alongside other dogs like I had done for so many other families over the years. It was heartbreaking because I wanted to give him the best life and to have the opportunity to experience as much as possible after spending the first part of his life confined and neglected. I came to the sad conclusion that this reactive behaviour was not going away anytime soon. Thankfully I found a highly educated and dedicated trainer (Renée Erdman, owner of Bravo Dog Training) who shared with us the knowledge Charlie and I so desperately needed. With Renée's guidance, Charlie and I were able to see real results using force-free science-based training! I discovered that letting go of all my expectations and allowing Charlie to explore his new world at his own pace was what he needed. I learned to tailor each walking experience around Charlie and how to avoid high stress situations. Our training was no longer about an idea I had created in my mind for our lives or how he should behave at all times under any circumstance. It was about patience, consistency, and taking small steps forward not leaps. Charlie has made huge improvements from when I first adopted him. We are now able to walk past dogs with little to no reaction. He has made a couple of great dog friends and has even played off leash at dog parks with multiple dogs at a time. We still have a long way to go and I've accepted the fact that we may never get to a place where Charlie is completely relaxed around other dogs but I feel far more calm and confident during our walks. I'm not only hopeful but excited about our future training goals. Teaching Charlie to think about a desired behaviour instead of negatively correcting an undesirable one has been life changing for both of us. I am happy to share my experience with others who may be going through a similar scenario and offer support as I know how isolating and overwhelming it can be without the right information or tools. I've experienced first-hand how frustrating it can feel living with a reactive dog but there is always hope and there will always be TREATS! When in doubt, Eat, Play, Love and you can't go wrong.

Mantrailing - The fun and rewarding sport of training dogs to find people using their powerful nose or as I like to describe it, "Sniffing with Purpose."
✨️
This sport is really like no other and offers a lot of benefits to you and your dog!
🌟
Mantrailing uses what comes most natural to your dog, their desire to hunt and their ability to use their nose!
✨️
This is a dog led sport where your dog is in the driver's seat and you are their support system. You will learn to work as a team, what your dog finds most motivating and how to better read your dog.
✨️
If you and your dog love being outdoors, being part of a like minded R+ dog community, having fun (there are lots of laughs) and trying new things, give this cool sport a try!
🌟
🌟
Benefits of Mantrailing:
Builds confidence and positive associations for nervous or reactive dogs✅️
Low impact on the body. High impact on the brain✅️ (Puppies to seniors can participate)🥳
Perfect outlet for working breeds living in urban environments✅️
Safe outlet for predatory behaviours✅️
Learn to work as a team and bond with your dog✅️
Sniffing creates feel good endorphins decreasing stress & anxiety ✅️
NO previous training required✅️
🌟
🌟
Embarrassed of your dog's behaviour in public? Don't think they can handle a group sport class? This is the sport for you!✅️
We welcome ALL dogs including hyperactive, vocal and reactive dogs✅️
🌟
I keep my workshops and class sizes small 3-4 dog teams max so I can provide a high quality learning experience tailored to each individual dog. I also provide private workshops and drop-ins.
✨️
All you need to join is your dog and a backclip harness!
🌟
Inquire today and let's get your dog sniffing with purpose at my Intro to Mantrailing Workshop 🥳 Once your dog has completed the intro, you can join drop-in progression classes and advanced workshops.

What an awesome time everyone had at my first CSI Vancouver K9 Unit Mantrailing Progression Workshop!!!
🌟
Handlers got to create their own scent articles by "taking evidence" and swabbing the trail layer's (the criminal😆) car and face which the searching dog then took scent from and set off to find that specific person. We also had the dog's take scent from the trail layer's car or camping chair and have the dog then set off to search from there✅️
🌟
***Fun Fact people lose 30,000 - 40,000 dead skin cells PER MINUTE! 🤢🤢🤢
🌟
I had dog related "criminal offences" written on name badges that the trail layer's picked at random and wore before they went to hide😆
🌟
I plan to run this workshop again 3-4 teams max, at 3 hours long. I like to keep my workshops small so I can provide a quality and tailored experience to each team attending. All participants receive a certificate and drinks and snacks are provided at the workshop!
🌟
If you want to join one of my Sniffing with Purpose progression series workshops, please send me an email [email protected] and let's get your dog's Mantrailing Journey started with an Intro Workshop :)

I'm excited to announce my "Sniffing with Purpose" Progression Workshop series! Mantrailing the sport of teaching dogs to find people using their powerful nose!!!

If you've done my intro workshop and want to unlock your dog's full sniffing potential make sure to join one of my upcoming progression workshops!

Indications Workshop - This workshop involves 3 levels to complete Novice, Intermediate and Expert. These levels will help your dog strengthen their indication behaviour with decoys, walking finds, trail layer lineups, door Indications and more!

Create Your Own Scent Article Workshop - This Workshop you will get to play team forensics with gloves and gauze swabs taking samples from other trail layer's vehicles along with learning to do a transfer start where your dog will take scent from my hand after shaking the hand of the hidden trail layer plus other fun starts🥳🥳🥳 😆

Food Article Starts Workshop - Where the trail layer will have bitten into a food item and your dog will take scent from that (don't worry your dog won't be eating the food 😉) and then set off to find their "missing" person!

All levels are welcome to join these progressions as I tailor and adjust the trail to your dog's current level. My workshops are 3 hours long with 4 teams max. I keep my workshops small so I can tailor the experience to each specifc team and provide a quality learning experience for each team attending.

Did you hear the awesome news! We've raised $1650.00 for Save A Dog Network Canada with our 2nd annual Spring Fundraiser for dogs in need 🐶❤️

Last year we hosted a Scavenger Hunt where people signed up with their dog to find treats hidden in eggs and this year we decided to do a Mantrailing Hunt themed Fundraiser and had 20 teams sign up 😮🥳🙏 and each team got to work 2 trails each!!! It was a fun packed day and was so great to see everyone having a really positive fun time with their dog.

Mantrailing aka searching for hidden people and getting tasty snacks?! Best game ever! We've more than doubled what we raised last year for Victoria Bulldog Society in loving memory of a sweet bulldog named Maggie❤️ Her memory lives on as we continue to help more dogs in need with our Spring Fundraisers❤️❤️❤️

Save A Dog Network works with the overpopulation crisis of injured and unwanted roaming dogs within Indigenous Communities across Northern Manitoba. They work to safely remove the dogs they can and then place them with rescues across Canada who then find them the loving homes they deserve. They also work to end dog shoots and set up free spay/neuter clinics in remote areas that have difficulty accessing Veterinary care. This non-profit is doing some really challenging and important work and it's been great to see the community come together and send some much needed funds to this wonderful organization.

We hope to be back next year even bigger and better!!! I've got some new plans in the works 😉

Thank you to our wonderful assistants Jenny Begg and Courtney and Glitza from Fairy Dog Mama for coming out and volunteering their time so the day could run smoothly for everyone attending. Another big thank you to Renée Nicole for taking these amazing shots of the dogs and their people.❤️🙏❤️

Also want to shout out all the amazing small local biz that donated items to our prize raffles!!! Camp Yellow Dog,
Canine Steele, Discover Dogs, The Wanted Co, Camine Gear, H & W co, Healthy Hound, Artist Zoe Cranley, Olive Jar Bakery, Eminence Organics, Wilke Plays.

See ya next Spring for another fun event helping dogs in need ❤️

Spring has Sprung and we are back for another sniffy fundraiser which started in honor of Maggie, a special bulldog and friend to those who were lucky enough to know her ❤️🌈
✨️
Last year we put together a Spring Scavenger Hunt, hiding treats in eggs for dog's to search and find using their powerful nose. With the help of this amazing R+ dog community, we were able to raise over $700 for Victoria Bulldog Society and help with some much needed medical bills.
🌼
This year we are raising money for Save a Dog Network Canada which helps set up spay/neuter clinics, working to end the dog shoots and helps with the overpopulation of injured and stray dogs within Northern Manitoba Indigenous Communities.
Save A Dog Network Canada
✨️
This year instead of a treat scavenger hunt, we are setting up a super fun Mantrailing Hunt!!! Instead of just searching for treats, your dog will get the chance to use their nose to find a "missing" person!!! And yes treats will still be involved😄
🌼
There are only 20 working spots available and your dog will get a 15min slot to work multiple trails :)
✨️
No Trailing Experience required.
No equipment required. You will only need a backclip harness to participate. We will supply the food pots/rewards and longlines.
🌼
This event is reactive dog friendly!!!
It will take place in a quiet area and all dogs will be worked individually and on-leash! *If your dog is nervous around new people, you can still participate but you will need to bring a person they are comfortable with to be their "missing person."
✨️
We will have raffle prizes available to win and everyone who donates will be entered to win.
🌼
Even if you can't attend the event, please consider donating any amountyou can and your name will be entered into one of the prize raffles.
✨️
We kindly ask those attending a working Trailing spot to make a minimum donation of $30.
🌼
Raffle Prizes to be announced but they will consist of items from these small local biz:

Introducing the next phase of Wilke Walks...Wilke Canine Wellness (Holistic Training & Enrichment).

My name is Nicky Wilke CPDT-KA, FDM and I'm a Certified Trainer who has been working professionally with reactive dogs for over 7 years.

I'm happy to share with you my new services that will be available starting January 1st, 2024. I've been working hard this past year inorder to make this exciting transition.

I will no longer be offering private training walks for reactive dogs. For my current walking clients don't worry, you will still be able to use that specialty service but sadly I will not be accepting any new inquiries for private training walks.

I will however be offering a tailored 12-16 week walk n coach program for reactive dogs! I have been working on developing this all-in-one training program for leash reactive dogs for many months and I'm thrilled to bring this special service to our community. Spots will be limited. More info on that service coming soon!

Services that I will be offering include:
* Private Training & Enrichment Packages (Focusing on Reactivitiy, New rescues, Adolescent dogs).
* Private Puppy Socialization & Training Packages
* Frantic Fido Walk N Coach (12-16 week all-in-one training program)
* Private Parallel Training
* Parallel Paws Training Club
* Mantrailing Workshops & Progression Sessions ( The sport of teaching dogs to find "lost" people.)
* Training Clinics

I'm really excited for this progression into more training and enrichment services. I have really loved developing Wilke Walks over the years, it was such a unique one-of-a-kind service for our community and has helped so many dogs and their people!
I plan to continue that same energy into our new business structure with Wilke Canine Wellness🐶

Thank you to everyone who has shown so much support over the years. I appreciate you and all your wonderful dogs 🙏❤️

Thank you for your continued trust. I look forward to the New Year and continuing to do what I am most passionate about, helping people and their reactive dogs learn to work together and thrive using a holistic and force-free approach!

I'm happy to announce I am now a Certified Trailing Instructor 🥳
🐾
Continuing education in this industry is a must and I've always been drawn to opportunities where dogs get to be dogs and do what comes most natural to them!
🐾
For those that are unfamiliar with Trailing, it is a dog sport teaching dogs to find "lost" people using their powerful nose to follow a scent trail.
🐾
The great thing about this sport, it's all about the dog working freely and the handler taking a backseat and observing their dog❤️ If you love dog led sports, this is for you!
🐾
ALL dogs can participate from puppies to seniors as well as reactive dogs! Each dog trails one at a time and always on-leash! It is a fantastic bonding experience, confidence building and provides much needed outlets (especially for high drive dogs).
🐾
Scent work is a powerful tool for creating more endorphins which can help a dog become more relaxed and content in their everyday life.
🐶
I'm SO EXCITED to bring this amazing sport to my community❤️🙏
Stay tuned cool stuff is coming for 2024!
***DM or Email [email protected] to get on the mailing list to be notified when workshops and classes are available!

Calling all R+ professionals looking for an exciting career opportunity📢

Wilke Walks & Training is looking to add one special person to our team. We are looking for a qualified and skilled person to help out with our popular private enrichment walking service🎉

Our Walking & Training company specializes in walk n trains for reactive dogs, private enrichment walks but we also work with puppies & adolescent dogs learning life skills.🐾
We are located in beautiful North Vancouver.

Looking for a specifc skill set:
Familiar with the mechanics of marker training and can accurately follow training plans✅
Experienced with dog reactivity and de-escalation techniques ✅
Fluent in dog body language ✅
Dedicated to continued education ✅
Passionate about canine enrichment and behaviour ✅️
Positive attitude and team player who can work independently ✅️

Advocate for R+✅

More than just a walk we strive to provide enrichment, structured play and positive experiences during our outdoor sessions. We believe in setting dogs up for sucesss so we carefully choose specific areas to walk in where we can work with distance and safely practice the training, meet up with other team members for parallel walks as well as provide decompression walks.

This position is not your regular dog walking position and really requires you to "think like a reactive dog" by being hyper vigilante and always aware or your surroundings and the environment. It's hard work but incredibly fun and rewarding to see the progression of the dogs that you have a hand in helping. If you enjoy actively working with dogs and handing out cookies while also providing outlets for dogs through toys and environmental enrichment, this is the job for you!

This is an Independent Contractor position and I'm looking for a one year commitment with a signed contract.
Compensation to be discussed based on your rate per 60min enrichment walk. As an IC you are responsible for your own walking equipment (longlines, waistbelt, tug toys, p**p bags and treats).

Must have your own reliable vehicle and flexibility Monday - Friday 9am-3pm. You will be working consistently with the same dogs week to week. You will not be walking dogs outside of your skill set. The owner of the company is a certified trainer who is available for any training questions or concerns with any of the dogs you are walking.

This is a fantastic opportunity for new trainers, training students or an experienced dog walker interested in advancing their handling skills🐾

If you are interested please send me your resume and why you think you would be great fit for this role:) [email protected].

The best friendships start with parallel walks🐾
These three cuties have formed quite the bond that developed over time with consistent parallel walks. This friendship was built slow and the dogs decided what they were comfortable with.
🐶
I actually didn't even cue them into this position that you see. I only asked Charlie to lie down, Maddy then decided she would follow I took the photo and Finley then chose to come right inbetween them and lie down
😭💖🙏
🐾
It was a very special moment that really showcased when you work with your dog on addressing emotions rather than suppressing, the pay off is a confident and happy dog💖
🐶
The two cuties on the left Maddy and Finley were fearful of many dogs and Charlie was extremely frustrated and very intense with his greetings when they all first started walking together. Over time they all learned to trust eachother and really enjoy eachother's company.
No better feeling for a reactive dog guardian than seeing your consistent work using humane training methods pay off.
🐾
What is a parallel walk? A parallel walk involves all dogs on leash, and walking together with as much space needed from each other to feel comfortable with the other dog present. It can look like dogs being side by side but often starts with dogs more staggered. Over time you can close in on the space if all dogs are looking relaxed😎
🐶
This is not only the safest way to introduce two unknown dogs but also a great way for reactive dogs to learn new associations around other dogs. Whether the dog is fearful, frustrated or just overly excited parallel walks can benefit them.
🐾
Choosing the right environment is important. Think wide open spaces and lots of greenery. Having the right equipment is also key.
A back clip harness with a longer leash minimum 10ft - 15ft can help encourage dogs to sniff and explore their environment more instead of fixating solely on the other dog.
🐶
Learning to co-exist with other dogs can take time but remember anything done properly takes time!
🐾
Want to join our Parallel Paws Training Club? Send us an email [email protected] and get on the waitlist for when new rounds of classes start 🐶

Dogs are the best teachers💕

Dogs are the best teachers💕

Dog reactivity isn’t something we look for when we are thinking about bringing a dog into our lives. And it’s often something we aren’t prepared for.

While I don’t mean to minimize the struggles and adversaries we must face when we are working through reactivity, it often results in a LOT of growth for us personally.

Lessons are taught, information is learned and often times a deeper connection grows through our empathy and understanding towards the dog we have in front of us.

I have worked with clients who went from thinking their dog was alpha and needed to be physically and emotionally “controlled” to having a full knowledge of their dogs behavior and how to make life easier for both dog and human. I’ve also seen clients find such a passion for this knowledge that they’ve changed careers and now are working as dog trainers and behavior specialists.

So, perhaps these dogs are here to teach us lessons and to help us grow.

Our Story

Nicky & Charlie Adopting Charlie and consistently working with him has not only taught me a lot but has inspired me to create Wilke Walks, the only dog walking company on the North Shore solely dedicated to private & tailored walks for other reactive & misunderstood dogs just like him! Always positive and always force-free, Wilke Walks believes in treating animals with compassion and using a food reward positive only approach during our walks. I adopted my sweet SPCA rescue dog named Charlie in December, 2015. He’s an energetic three year old husky/lab mix and my partner in crime.
