A very long but productive day with alpaca, llama, and sheep shearing and mani pedis, goat hoof trims and vaccinations, tusk trims for some pigs, and donkey hoof trims.
Our freshly sheared animals are ready for the heat wave this weekend!
A huge thank you to everyone who made today possible!!

Flashback: One year ago today!
Miss Piggy, who really suits her name and is very much like the Muppet, was just starting to love wallowing after avoiding even the idea of getting dirty, pictures like this were rare!
The second picture is a warning that something is wrong. A pig not interested in food is definitely not feeling well! Pigs never feel full and will generally eat whatever you want to give them. This was when Charlie discovered how much he loves orange Gatorade, which helped him on his road to a full recovery!

Friday is shearing day! The alpacas are grazing peacefully because we haven't told them yet. Friday will include haircuts, mani pedis, vaccinations and wellness checks. Not their favourite day, but they will feel better once they look like q-tips, especially with how hot it has been!

The new boys are settling in and got their first look at the alpacas this morning! Someone was even brave enough to come to the door for a closer look!

There are 3 new faces at Serenity Lane Animal Sanctuary!
Meet Chalky, Baily, and Sandy!
They look similar because they are a dad and 2 sons. Chalky is an older fellow at 22 years old and his sons are 10 and 12.
They have arrived in time for shearing, we'll give them some time to settle in first and get used to their new home.

Josie is a pygora (pygmy angora) goat and has a shedding style all her own! Right now, she has a little bit of everything, done, ready, and not ready to pull. Angoras don't need to be sheared, when it's ready you can just pull it out.
Yes, it's as satisfying as peeling a sunburn! Want to see for yourself? Come for a tour this weekend! Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 - reach out and let us know you are coming, we'd love to introduce you to everyone!

Maple is feeling better!!
Over the last few days, she has definitely improved. She eats all of her meals (some are doubles to make up for lost time) and has been wandering around outside at a walk, although I did see her trot across the yard today!
She is still on medication for the next few days, but is more and more herself.

Maple still isn't herself, she still has a bit of a fever. She eats a little, drinks some Gatorade, and will go outside and wander as far as the wallow, which she was laying in for a while yesterday. It's hard to see her like this, she is normally running everywhere and grabbing mouthfuls of grass as she goes.

Maple isn't feeling like herself. Over the last 4 or 5 days, she has been very lethargic, spending most of her time standing in the corner or sleeping. At first we suspected a heat stroke because of the sudden change in temperature. But today the barn is cooler and her temperature is still high, she went outside and wandered around slowly, which is very different from her usual high energy trot.
We tried out some Gatorade because she hasn't been drinking very much and she drank a whole bottle of the red "fruit punch" flavour! Hopefully that will help her feel a little better.

After a lot of explaining, encouraging, and reassuring that it was safe, Paul convinced the boys to try out their new field!
Missing are the pictures of the first night when they stayed out after the street lights came on and got lost in the dark! Paul had to go back out there and guide them back to their shelter.
They are now pros at going in and out!
