The llamas, who aren't particularly brave, don't seem bothered by pigs roaming around their pen. The pigs like that the llamas aren't neat when eating and go in to "help" with the clean up!

Say hello to Polk-a-dot and Chuckles, our two new Nigerian Dwarf goats!
Today we welcomed these two guys to the barn! They are settling in in the bottom barn, but are used to having a little more freedom, they had free run of the barn at their last home. They seem to have adjusted to a barn full of new animals fairly well. They are brothers, so I think they are good because they are together. We will give them a few days to adjust and then introduce them to the gang. They can see the goats through the stall wall to get to know them a bit first before meeting them outside.

Meet Sky!
Sky is a 27 year old horse who has had a difficult couple of days. He was living on a farm with his long time friend who was around the same age, but the friend got really sick and had to be euthanized. Their owner didn't want Sky to be alone, so we took him in and introduced him to some of our horses here.
We are giving him space to settle in while also grieving his friend and coping with the move. He seems to be handling it well, but choosing to be by himself. He is curious about his new surroundings and gave the llamas a wide berth going in and out.
He was living outside at his old home, but followed Cooper and Ian into the barn and calmly went into the stall we had prepared for him, so we will keep him with the indoor horses but watch to make sure he is comfortable inside.

Happy 4th birthday, Nora!
Nora broke her leg at just 2 weeks old and then spent the next 4 weeks dragging her cast around. Did it slow her down? No, it did not!
I think the whole experience made her a little more independent than her cousin Daisy, she is often on her own or with the other goats rather than her family.
She is most likely to be up in the window sill, it's her favourite spot!

Abraham, our sweet, easygoing mini pig, is not feeling well. He didn't feel like eating all day yesterday or today. A pig that doesn't want to eat is a big deal - pigs definitely live up to that stereotype! The vet was here today trying to figure out what is wrong and the current theory is constipation (who knew pigs could get constipated?), so we are keeping him hydrated and having "movement producing" food on hand. It's hard to see him feeling so blah!
Feel better soon, Abraham!

Welcome to the herd, Daisy! She arrived over the weekend to join our alpacas herd.
Daisy's herd had recently passed away, leaving her alone with some chickens for company. Her owners knew that she needed other alpacas to live her best life, so they reached out to us to see if we could add her to our group.
After a tense and slightly overwhelming initial meeting, Daisy has settled in with her new friends and is slowly getting to know them.
She stands out from the herd with her unique shearing! Our herd got clipped right down this year, including their heads, so she's the only one with long hair!
Also, because we have a goat named Daisy, we need to rename her (I checked with her previous owners and she doesn't really know her name). I was thinking of another flower name, like Lily, Rose, Tulip...what do you think?

💔 RIP Sweet Niblet

We knew this day would come. Niblet was our most senior goat, she was 17 years old! She wore a dog coat all winter and had her own heat lamp to keep her warm. We also fed her extra hay cubes in the hopes that she would be able to enjoy another summer.
Niblet loved going out to graze! Despite her advanced age, she was first at the gate to go out every morning and she would make her way slowly to the very back of the paddock and spend her day happily picking through the tall grass and weeds and munching away. She'd sometimes come in for a big drink and then go all the way back out again.
That's where we found her earlier today - out in the field on a perfect summer day. This is exactly the end that we hoped for, but it's still hard to say goodbye to such a sweet girl.

Happy Gotcha Day, Billy!
A year ago today we loaded Billy into the back seat of our truck and brought him to the sanctuary.
He has become a new little man. When he arrived, he was a bit of a loner and unsure of everything. Now he knows what he likes. Billy prefers spending time in the upper barn with people rather than outside with the other goats. If he does go out, he likes someone to stay with him so he can check in with them. He enjoys his time with the goats, but it's a lot, so when he's ready, he goes to the gate and when the gate is opened, he runs all the way up and into the safety of his stall!
He'd rather spend time following his people around the upper barn and testing his horns on the walls!

The alpaca forecast for today is very hot and sunny!!
Our alpacas forecast is calculated using time of day and the number of sunbathing alpacas. It's before 10:00am and there are 6 alpacas laying down already (8 as I'm writing this!). It's going to be a hot one!!
Stay cool today!
