A pig pile! 🐷

The Hallway Dwellers - Little Miss Piggy, Ruby, Dotty, and Bella.
Technically, Regan is in the picture, but all you can see is part of his back end because he is facing the other way!

Cold pigs on the end of the pile will get up, move to the middle, and climb on top of the pile (example shown here). Everyone else becomes disgruntled as they are forced to move over to make room, then all is quiet again... Until the new outside pig gets cold!!

Our residents are getting outside to enjoy these last few days of "warmer" weather.
Once the snow and cold comes, most of our smaller animals don't want to go outside and would rather spend the days napping and waiting for spring!
The colder weather also means that everyone eats more hay and, because of the drought this summer, we are asking for donations for our winter hay fund.
Hay during the winter is one of our biggest expenses, we buy about 100 bales a week at $6 a bale and it adds up quickly!
If you are able to help us, any amount is greatly appreciated!

Simone was out enjoying the sunshine today!
She also loves to go back inside and slam the door shut! Sometimes she'll even lay in front of it and lock Leon outside!

We need some help!

Our area experienced a long drought this summer. We had to start feeding our winter hay in August after the grass died, as a result we've had to start buying hay much earlier this year. Our residents eat more hay to stay warm once it gets really cold, so as the winter progresses, our hay needs increase, especially for the animals that live outside with just a shelter. We spend about $30,000 a year on hay, but this year will be even higher!!
Can you help us pay our current hay bill of $1850? This will pay for some round bales that we have already used and a load of hay that we need to buy today.
Any amount helps, no matter how small! It takes a village to run a sanctuary and we truly appreciate your support! ❀️

Blossom and Daisy, mother and daughter Nigerian Dwarf goats, are usually together whether they are inside or out causing mayhem. All of our goat kids that were born here remain close to their mothers and get upset and start calling if they are separated for too long,

Happy 3rd birthday, Charlie!!

Charlie was born here at the sanctuary about 10 days after his mother, Dotty, and 10 other potbelly pigs had arrived. He has been living in the house since he was 6 weeks old and may be a bit spoiled... He uses his smarts for evil a lot of the time, but he's got a cute face and I think that helps!!
He's making his best scary face for Halloween, but it didn't turn out to be all that scary!!

We are happy to accept any pumpkins and gourds, our pigs loved the pumpkin parade delivery last year!
Look for the wheelbarrow at the end of our driveway starting tomorrow or drop by in the afternoon and watch the pigs enjoying your pumpkin!
Thank you to the Township of Asphodel-Norwood for coordinating pumpkin drop off this year.

πŸŽƒ HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Wondering what to do with your pumpkins afterward?

Instead of tossing your pumpkins after Halloween, consider donating them to Serenity Lane Animal Sanctuary! Your pumpkins (free of paint, glitter, candle wax, toothpicks, and not rotten or spoiled) make a lovely fall treat for the animals.

πŸ“ Drop-off options:
β–ͺ Outside the gates directly before the Asphodel-Norwood Transfer Station
β–ͺ At Serenity Lane Animal Sanctuary
https://www.serenitylaneanimalsanctuary.ca/contact-5

If dropping off at the Transfer Station, please do so before closing on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Sanctuary staff will coordinate pickup with Township staff.

George, our biggest mini pig, having a meeting with Leon, our smallest big pig!

Not represented are our "medium pigs", formerly our big pigs...before the big big pigs showed up (Wilbur, Mel, and Maple)!

Some of our other mini pigs like to challenge the big pigs to a fight through the fence. We use words like "snack-size", "timbit", and "two bite brownie" while trying to explain their chances of success. (Not that the big pigs would eat them)
Fortunately, our gentle giants don't take the minis seriously. I've never actually seen them roll their eyes, but I suspect they don't think it's worth the effort for such an obvious outcome!

πŸ’”πŸ½ Today we said goodbye to Malcolm, one of the big pigs that came to us from SAFE Sanctuary in Quebec. Moving and change is often hard for pigs, but Malcolm took it in stride, accepting us and his new home with curiosity and kindness (for which we were grateful, their size can be intimidating!)
Malcolm had been having an increasingly difficult time getting up recently. When pain medication could no longer make him comfortable and he was unable to stand, we knew we had to make the difficult decision and let him go.
Even though he was only with us a short time, we will miss his gentle nature.

Our first good frost of the season. One minute it was summer and we were in shorts and t-shirts and then it was on to pants and sweatshirts and putting the rest of the windows in the horse barn!
