Here are 3 ways I will help Harlo stay relaxed and safe during the festivities this year:

1️⃣ Her bed or mat
I’ll have her bed or mat at key spots such as living room for present time, and the kitchen for cooking/prepping. This allows her to be involved and see everything going on, while also not being underfoot.

2️⃣ Quiet Time in the Crate
For Harlo her quiet time will actually be in my parents backyard since that’s where she is happiest, but a crate can be a cozy retreat if your pup needs a break from the noise. Add a blanket on top if that also helps create zen! I’d recommend placing your pups crate in a room with a door so that they can escape all the noise and have a little nap!

3️⃣ Under legs or chair
During dinner time, Harlo will be under my chair or my legs. I do this so that she is not begging people for food, or getting into trouble elsewhere. While we’re having dinner she will also have hers in something like a toppl or snuffle mat. This helps her to stay with me as well as relax as she is burning some mental energy by foraging.

📣 Free feeding (leaving food out all day) might seem convenient, but it can cause some serious health and behaviour issues for your dogs. Here’s why it’s time to reconsider:

⚠️ Obesity Risk – Constant access to food = overeating, which can lead to joint issues, diabetes, and heart problems.
⚠️ Digestive Issues – Grazing all day can upset your dog’s digestive system, leading to stomach problems and irregular bowel movements.
⚠️ Lack of Routine – Dogs thrive on structure. Without set meal times, they can feel anxious or confused about when it’s time to eat.
⚠️ Resource Guarding – Free feeding can lead to food aggression as some dogs begin to guard their bowl.
⚠️ Decreased Training Motivation– When food is always available, it’s less effective as a reward during training.
⚠️ Hidden Health Issues – It’s harder to spot changes in appetite that could signal health problems like dental pain or GI issues.
⚠️ Boredom – Without an “interactive” feeding routine, your dog may lose interest in their food altogether.

💡 *How to Feed Your Dog Instead*
✅ Set Regular Meal Times – Feed 2-3 times a day with the right portion size to keep your dog’s nutrition in check.
✅ Use Puzzle Feeders, or Snuffle Mats – Make mealtime fun and slow down fast eaters to prevent bloating and gulping.
✅ Use kibble for training rewards
