A gift for Guinevere ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ

The regal and majestic Guinevere received a gift this week from a client who met her in the parking lot and, much like us, fell hard for her gentle and expressive demeanor. โค

She was very curious about her new toy, sniffing And cuddling it while she received her laser treatment.

Guinevere, her owner, and we at Mobility Matters would like to thank our client for the very thoughtful gift. Your kindness is much appreciated! ๐Ÿถโค๐Ÿฅฐ

A tale of two Franks ๐Ÿถโค:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of timesโ€ฆ

In reality, itโ€™s always a good time when the Franks visit. Frank and Frank, both dachshunds, have not let IVDD get in the way of them living their best lives. Both have been excellent patients in rehab and their mobility has made great progress through exercises, hydrotherapy and laser. There is a stark age difference between them, which obviously affects recovery expectations, but by working on retraining nerve pathways and improving strength and balance, they have both become superstars in their own ways. โค๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

Congratulations to Bronte for graduating from rehab! ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿถ Bronte presented to Mobility Matters on April 15, three weeks post TPLO. After ten weekly sessions, her muscling, strength and range of motion have improved exceptionally well. We were especially impressed by her ability to balance with her front paws on an exercise peanut, while walking forward and backwards.

We are sad to say goodbye to this excitable and friendly girl, but are so happy and proud of her for the progress sheโ€™s made! ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Rally has the distinguished look of model on a dog food bag. ๐Ÿถโค

This handsome Lab is walking and weight bearing five weeks post TPLO, but still has ways to go to build back the muscle he lost. ๐Ÿพ

For a Lab, he was a little unsure of his hind legs being examined and touched, but that's okay! In rehab we work with our patients, whatever their comfort level. We donโ€™t need to do any manipulation or handling to any dog who doesnโ€™t want it.

We look forward to making Rally comfortable and happy in his rehab sessions, and canโ€™t wait to witness his progress and improvement! ๐Ÿถโค๐Ÿพ

It was an absolute treat meeting Sugar Buns for her rehab consultation. ๐Ÿถ Sugar has lived a very active life, moving across Canada and spending many years hiking and adventuring. Now in her senior years, she is slowing down a little, but with rehab we can help maintain some of that sporty lifestyle for her.

In addition to having arthritis in her stifles, Sugar likely has some underlying neurological condition, as she occasionally knuckles her hind paws. Our goals for her are to strengthen her stabilizer muscle groups with weight shifting and balancing exercises, as well as stretching her hip flexors, and treating her compensatory back pain with acupuncture and laser.

Weโ€™re looking forward to working with this sweetheart, and we just know sheโ€™ll be an excellent patient in rehab! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพโค

Did you know that massage therapy can be incredibly beneficial for your furry friends? Here are some of the amazing benefits that massage therapy can offer to pets:

๐ŸŒŸ Relieves Pain: Massage can help alleviate pain from injuries, arthritis, and other conditions, providing your pet with much-needed comfort.

๐ŸŒŸ Prevents Joint Stiffness: Regular massage can keep your pet's joints flexible and prevent stiffness, promoting better mobility.

๐ŸŒŸ Stimulates Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems: Massage boosts blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic system, helping improve overall health.

๐ŸŒŸ Relieves Muscle Spasms: Massage can relax tense muscles and relieve spasms, making your pet feel more relaxed and at ease.

While the exercises and treatments we apply in rehab are serious business, sometimes we can't help but act a bit silly with our loveable patients.

Fifteen year old Bobby loves coming to rehab for the mental and physical stimulation it provides him, and we like to end his sessions with laser, massage and the occasional โ€œtongues outโ€ selfie.

Bobby's owner is extremely happy with the benefits that rehab and monthly Librela injections have provided him, and we hope to continue working (and goofing around) with Bobby for a long time to come! ๐Ÿถโค๐Ÿพ

Perky ears are the theme of the week! We see our share of Collies and Shepherds here, but Cosima is the first Elkhound we've treated. ๐Ÿถ

We can tell that these attentive, athletic dogs are going to be great candidates for rehab, and we can't wait to see more of Loupin, Cosima and Zelda to work with them along their rehab journey! ๐Ÿถโค๐Ÿพ

05/15/2024

Iliopsoas injuries and strains are relatively common in dogs and can be caused by a sudden traumatic event like a slip or a fall, or can be secondary to another hind limb injury. If a dog injures their stifle, for example, they may take shorter strides on their hind limbs, causing the iliopsoas to shorten over time.

Treatment for iliopsoas includes having a patient put their front paws up on an elevated surface to stretch the hips, hydrotherapy to encourage longer strides, and therapeutic laser for pain control. It can be a nagging injury, but by incorporating an exercise and stretching plan, and managing pain, iliopsoas injuries can improve greatly through rehabilitation. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

Weโ€™ve seen a lot of new faces at Mobility Matters recently that weโ€™d like to share and appreciate! This new group of patients have come to us for a variety of orthopedic, neurologic and age-related mobility issues, and weโ€™re happy to say that even after just one or two sessions many of their owners are reporting visible improvement.

A little bit of exercise and pain control can make a big difference in a dog whoโ€™s been mostly sedentary, and the mental stimulation they receive from rehab can make a significant difference in their day-to-day mood.

We love to see progress and improvement in the pets we treat, and encourage owners that have seen the positive impact firsthand to spread the word about the benefits of rehab! ๐Ÿถโค

Pepper is recovering very well after having a TPLO in late February, and she loves to tell us all about it every chance she gets! Huskies use a range of vocalizations to communicate, which include whining, howls, yelps and screams. These noises may sometimes sound extreme to us, but the sounds they make are very useful when you're working in a sled dog team and need to keep everyone in the loop. Their cries also travel long distances so if one dog gets separated from the pack, others will be able to hear and find them.

When analyzing a dog breedโ€™s seemingly odd or unique behaviours, it's always useful to look back in time to see what jobs they were bred for. A little backstory can help a lot in better understanding our furry friends. ๐Ÿถโค

The Shiba Inu is an iconic dog breed, and by far the most popular breed in their native Japan. Their numbers have also been increasing in North America since they were introduced in the 1950s.

Shibas have existed for over two thousand years and have historically been used for hunting and flushing out small game. Their name translates to โ€œbrushwood dog,โ€ as their small physique and impressive muscling helps them navigate mountainous and wooded terrain with ease.

The Shiba also has one of the longest life expectancies of any dog, with an average longevity of 15.5 years.

Some may know the breed to have a reputation of being feisty, but eleven year old Kero is as calm and well-mannered as can be. We love working with this handsome fellow, and with his will to work, and growing motivation for liver treats, we are confident that rehab will help him build up his strength! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜

Bentleyโ€™s smile says it all! A client's generous donation of a mobility cart has been a greatly appreciated gift. Bentley has taken to it naturally, and is positively beaming as he runs around freely at home and in the clinic.

The extra support provided by the cart also helps to work on range of motion and โ€œpatterningโ€ exercises, where the rehab therapist manually takes a dogโ€™s leg through the action of stepping.

This device has been amazingly beneficial to Bentley, the most deserving of dogs!

If you have an unused mobility device lying around, please consider donating it to help more pups like him! ๐Ÿถโค

Everyone knows that huskies are built for the cold weather, but we never knew they could be this cool!
Snowy was looking really stylish sporting her doggles for therapeutic laser treatment this week. She is a senior girl who still has a lot of energy, but at her age we are focusing that energy on strength building exercises that will help support her limbs and core. During her consultation appointment we worked on correcting her posture for sit-stands, and used cavaletti rails to encourage stifle flexion. Snowy picked these exercises up almost immediately, and we're confident that with her smarts and eagerness to work that she'll do great in rehab! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜

Tenzin is a true Party Poodle, packed with all the energy that comes along with the breed. This exuberance and tendency to bounce around may have contributed to an incident of iliopsoas myo-tendonitis that Tenzin had last December. Luckily, the iliopsoas injury has since been resolved, but his owners have opted to bring him for rehab to build up his muscling to reduce the risk of injury in the future.
Tenzin had his second session today and did an amazing job with his therapeutic exercises and hydrotherapy. Building up his strength, and using the underwater treadmill to burn excess energy will go a long way to keeping Tenzin healthy and fit for life. ๐Ÿถโค

The many modalities we use in rehab are designed to work together to provide the most effective therapy for each patient. When treating aging pets weโ€™re often treating multiple conditions and symptoms simultaneously, which may include: weakness due to muscle loss, arthritis, ataxia or other neurological injuries, and orthopedic injuries.

Using a combination of therapeutic exercises, photobiomodulation, acupuncture, and Librela injections, thirteen year old Bobby has quickly regained some of his youthful spirit and playfulness. He is more comfortable moving around, and his owner is happy to be able to take him on enriching walks again.

Multimodal therapy is crucial in rehab and allows us to customize a plan for each individual. Bobby is proof that pain management and gentle exercise can greatly improve a senior dogโ€™s quality of life, and we are so happy to see this newfound pep in his step! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ

Bailey has such a unique and cute face, and we just canโ€™t help but highlight him and his progress in rehab. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜ Small dogs like Bailey can do quite well with conservative management of CCL tears, and may be able to avoid surgery. This is because they have less weight to bear and the scar tissue that forms around the stifle is able to support the joint better than in a larger dog.
Our treatment for such cases includes weight shifting exercises to encourage the patient to begin putting weight on the injured leg, hydrotherapy using buoyancy and water resistance, and laser therapy to promote healing and control pain. Bailey is a lovely boy who has taken very well to rehab, and we look forward to watching him continue to improve and bear more weight on his recovering leg! ๐Ÿถโค๐Ÿพ

03/12/2024

When the head of a dogโ€™s femur is damaged due to a traumatic event, or disease, it may no longer fit in the โ€œsocketโ€ of the joint, leading to decreased mobility, pain, and inflammation. In this case, a surgeon may decide to perform a femoral head ostectomy, and remove the head of the femur.
After surgery, the patient will go through rehabilitation where our first challenge is training the patient to put weight on the surgical leg again. Over time, scar tissue will form between the femur and socket, creating a โ€œfalse joint,โ€ and as the dog continues to build muscle around the joint, they will regain much of their previous mobility.
Meet Benji, an FHO patient that comes to us for his rehab! ๐Ÿถโค

03/09/2024

In pet rehab we use a tool called a goniometer to measure the angles of joint extension and flexion. These measurements can help us quantitatively determine the range of motion of a patient, and track their improvement through treatment.
When doing goniometry, we also use anatomical landmarks to ensure our measurements are as accurate and consistent as possible. This isnโ€™t always easy, however, as dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and many are not keen on staying still while being manipulated.
Like all things, it takes practice to become quick and precise in goniometry! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

In any given week at Mobility Matters we see patients in a vast range of shapes and sizes. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ
Severus is the tallest dog weโ€™ve ever had in our treadmill, and so we fill the water nearly to its maximum level! Whereas, CiCi is one of our smallest patients and needs only a few inches of water to reach the level of buoyancy we want.
However, hydrotherapy isnโ€™t the only tool that can be adapted for all creatures great and small. Our therapeutic laser can be set to the specifications of any canine or feline, and many land exercises can be modified to suit any patient too.
In short (or tall), we are happy to treat any and all dogs and cats at Mobility Matters, and will always find a way to make a treatment plan thatโ€™s the right fit for your pet! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑโค
