Displacement behaviours are ways dogs let us know how they are "feeling". They are normal dog behaviours done out of context. They usually indicate stress or anxiety and are a dog's way of alleviating or diffusing their stress without conflict. Because they can look like normal behaviours, they can be hard to notice if you're not looking for them. Some of the most common ones are:
• Lip licking
• Yawning
• Scratching
• Sniffing
• Shaking as if they’re wet
• Self-grooming
• Rolling on the ground
• Mounting/humping
• Mouthing/nipping/hyper-activity
