This Black History Month, we continue celebrating the incredible contributions of Black
individuals to veterinary medicine and animal care.
Today we are highlighting Alfreda Johnson Webb.
In 1949, Alfreda Johnson Webb became one of the first Black women to graduate from veterinary school in the United States, thus becoming one of the first Black women licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the country and join Womenโ€™s Veterinary Association.
She also founded the School of Veterinary Medicine of North Carolina State University. In 1971, she became the first Black woman in the North Carolina General Assembly, serving on many committees including serving as the Chairperson of Minority Affairs, president of the Democratic Women of NC, and a member of the NC Council on Sickle Cell Syndrome.
Letโ€™s continue to honor and support diversity within the Veterinary profession.

We met Rocky for the first time yesterday.
His dad says he is a Samoyed, but we're pretty sure he's a very small cloud. โ˜
He is 11 weeks old, weighs 5.8kg, and his favorite thing to do is bite everything!
We can't wait for your next visit to see how much you grew and if your left ear is sticking up yet!

This Black History Month, weโ€™re celebrating the incredible contributions of Black individuals to veterinary medicine and animal care.
Today we are highlighting Augustus Nathaniel Lushington who became the first black man to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1897.
After graduating, he moved to Lynchburg, Virginia even with the racial tensions occurring there. He began his veterinary adventure treating cows, horses and other live stock. Dr. Lushington would work multiple jobs to make ends meet and unfortunately never got to retire. He was well known for his kind heartedness and would walk miles to treat the different livestock that needed help. At this time many white farmers would refuse to pay him for his services. He continued on anyway, and even though during this time he was unable to take any legal action for his unpaid services due to the color of his skin.
Dr. Lushington being an important part of veterinary history, has many things to teach us in the world about understanding.
Letโ€™s continue to honor and support diversity within the veterinary profession.

We had the funny surprise today of finding a note inside this patients carrier.
Dusty got into the dog treats when she was last with us so decided to bring this note in with her today:
"To NOAH,
Dad says i need to apologize for helping myself to the dog treats on Saturday.
I am sorry.
But since he is not here may i have a dog treat today
xoxo
Dusty"
Something tells us you are not all that sorry Dusty, but yes, you may have a dog treat since they are just beef liver and safe for cats ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
