Happy August M.A.C. Family! 😎 We are halfway through the summer months and Hank is here to remind you to continue giving your pets their monthly heartworm, flea, and tick prevention.
Happy visits are when time is set aside specifically just for you and your pet to be in the clinic. We try our best to make your pet’s vet visit as positive as possible, but more often than not dogs and cats may associate going to the vet with a poke and a prod. The goal of the happy visit is to allow your pet to become more comfortable in the clinic and with the staff by coming in specifically for treats and snuggles! Creating these positive associations gives your pet the opportunity to learn that the vet isn’t a place to be afraid of. If they can learn early that it is a place full of fun loving people who give you lots of good snacks, then they will associate it with a fun place to be and reduce the amount of fear, anxiety and stress they experience while here for appointments. Visit our website at https://macvets.com/why-you-should-visit-your-vet-just-to-say-hi/ to learn more about happy visits and why they are so beneficial!
Being a Fear Free certified clinic means meeting your pet where they are most comfortable. When appropriate we make every effort possible to ensure your pet is free from fear, anxiety, and stress.

How to protect your dog from Lyme disease: 💚Annual blood parasite testing.💚Ensure your pet is on tick prevention whenever the weather is above 4oC. In Ontario, we recommend year round tick prevention for pets.💚Check your dog daily for ticks. If you find a tick, remove the tick using a tick twister to ensure the tick is properly removed.💚Ask your veterinarian about the Lyme vaccine for your dog.💚Don’t forget about cats! If your cat goes outside, make sure your cat is on prevention.💚Check out the Public Health Ontario Lyme Disease Map to see which locations in Ontario are risk areas for Lyme disease.

We need your help to make your pet’s visit with us as Fear Free as possible and this starts BEFORE their vet visit. Ensuring your pet arrives at the hospital in a calm state of mind can set the foundation for a positive vet visit:🌟Your pet should voluntarily go into a carrier or crate, or wear a seatbelt harness. If your pet is not comfortable with this, practice before the appointment date.🌟Give Pre - visit calming medication appropriately, as prescribed by your veterinarian.🌟Cats and small dogs should be resting comfortably in the carrier before being transferred to the car.🌟When transporting your pet in a carrier, minimize movement. Support the carrier from the bottom.🌟Apply calming pheromones and/or scents in the car 20-30 minutes before your pet enters the vehicle.🌟Play calming music in the car and warm or cool your vehicle to a comfortable temperature before getting inside.🌟Secure the carrier in the car to keep it from moving around while driving.🌟Avoid feeling rushed. If you are stressed, so is your pet.🌟Avoid accelerating and decelerating quickly, and take turns slow and controlled to prevent car sickness. Visit our website www.macvets.com to learn about the Fear Free Veterinary visit.

How often should I be brushing my pet’s teeth? 🦷 Just like humans, the gold standard is to be brushing your pet’s teeth at least once a day.At minimum you should brush your pet’s teeth at least every other day. Anything less than that is less effective against preventing periodontal disease.
