Little Miss jumped off a chair and broke three of the little bones in her forelimb (swipe right to see her x-rays). Luckily puppies can heal incredibly quickly and with weekly splint applications she healed great! Check her out walking after her final x-ray in her puffy winter coat 😂

Give Louis some love - he’s finished chemo and in remission! This little guy has been in cancer treatment since spring of 2024 when he had surgery to remove the primary mass followed by chemotherapy. Cancer can be a scary diagnosis, but our treatments have come such a long way to help patients beat this disease. Considering aggressive surgical treatment and chemotherapy is a very personal decision for caregivers. In Louis’ case he was a perfect candidate and had very minimal side effects from his chemo. We’re so excited to see him healthy and happy!

October is RVT (registered veterinary technician) month. We are celebrating our wonderful RVTs Michelle, Katharine, and Sarah, who are such assets to our hospital. They all have been a part of our team since they graduated their veterinary technician program. Michelle has been on our team since 2010, Katharine since 2017 and Sarah since 2020. We are grateful for all that you do! 🙌🏼🫶🏻💕

Over the years, we have had many students come through our doors as part of their high school co-op program. Many of these students are interested in becoming a veterinarian or veterinary technician or have interest in another profession in the healthcare field. It is such a great way for students to see hands-on what it is like in the day of a veterinary hospital. They learn proper patient handling and restraint, they get the opportunity to observe surgeries and dentistries, learn about common diseases and unique cases, and hospital maintenance. This semester we are lucky to have Sabrina and Kerry from Oakville Trafalgar High School and Carter from Blakelock High School!

Meet Mia the mini Australian Shepherd who had her first litter of puppies this summer. In preparation for her labour we performed x-rays to determine how many puppies she was expecting. Determining the number of expected puppies helps her family and our team know if labour has stalled and when medical intervention might be necessary. Luckily Mia had a smooth labour and all her puppies were born healthy.

Can you tell how many puppies Mia was expecting? (Swipe to see her with two of her puppies R2 and Leia at their first puppy visit)

Winston, a sweet 8 moon old miniature dachshund, came in recently to remove a persistent deciduous canine tooth, and our lovely RVT Sarah, was there to cuddle him during his recovery.

Persistent deciduous teeth 🦷are teeth that do not fall out when the permanent adult tooth erupts. They can cause crowding, and food and debris can become trapped between the teeth which will lead to tartar accumulation, gingivitis, and eventually periodontitis of the adult tooth. It is best to remove them promptly to ensure optimal health of the permanent tooth!

Ollie vs. Porcupine. Sadly, this is not Ollie’s first encounter with porcupines! He was such a good boy and feeling MUCH better after the quills were removed.

If your dog is quilled by a porcupine, minimize their movements and prevent them from rubbing their face if there are quills there. Go to a veterinarian as quickly as possible! Porcupine quills can embed into tissues and migrate deeper into the body and potentially pierce and damage not only vital organs but blood vessels. Do NOT attempt to remove them yourselves, as it is painful and they can break off in your dog’s skin and may end up with an abscess. It is extremely painful for the dog to have quills removed and it requires general anesthesia and pain relief.

Do dogs learn from their mistakes and avoid porcupines in the future? Unfortunately not! It is best to prevent your dog from roaming at dusk or after dark and going into areas with known porcupines dens.

🎉🎉We’re so proud of our staff members Meghan and Stephanie who have been accepted into the Ontario Veterinary College Class of 2028! 🎉🎉

We’ve watched these awesome women grow from high school volunteers into full time staff members and seen their passion for animals every day. They have worked so hard and will be amazing veterinarians. Congratulations Meg and Steph!

Toulouse was feeling pretty sassy with a sore belly when he came to see us. His owners found pieces of a towel missing when they woke up in the morning and rushed Toulouse in for x-rays. We could see pieces of fabric in his stomach (swipe right) and despite attempts to make him vomit the towel it wouldn’t come up. Dr. Waters went to surgery to remove the offending towel and Toulouse is feeling MUCH better (see last pic).

Congratulations to our biggest losers Gus and Ellie . This dynamic duo has been on a weight loss plan over the last six months and together they’ve lost 24lbs! Kudos to Gus and Ellie’s family for implementing the diet changes necessary to make this a reality. Weight gain can affect so many parts of our pets lives - from osteoarthritis and mobility to overall longevity. We are so proud of this family for the work they’ve done to help these two live their happiest and healthiest lives!
