GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING…Meet Hope, the bravest little chihuahua! Hope saw Dr. Waters after her owner noticed that she seemed painful. Dr. Waters found wounds on her side and was worried she had been bitten by another dog. Hope was x-rayed to investigate the extent of her wounds.

Hope’s x-rays (swipe right) showed that her abdominal wall had been punctured and her intestines were protruding through this hole. This type of injury (called a traumatic abdominal wall hernia) can cause damage to the intestinal tract that can be life threatening.

Dr. Waters and Dr. Baird went to surgery right away to gently move Hope’s intestines back into her abdomen and close the hole in her abdominal wall (third photo). Luckily there was no damage to any of Hope’s internal organs. Her bite wounds were treated and closed and Hope stayed in hospital for a couple of days for us to monitor her recovery.

She is now three weeks post surgery, her wounds have healed and she has completely recovered! What a champ!

Holiday plants like holly and mistletoe can be concerning to pets. Ingestion of holly leaves or berries may cause gastrointestinal upset and lethargy if ingested by a dogs other symptoms include drooling, lip smacking and head shaking.
Mistletoe is generally hung high enough that it is out of our pet’s reach. There are two main types of mistletoe commonly used, and thankfully the American mistletoe causes mild signs of gastrointestinal irritation if ingested. However if a large amount of American mistletoe is ingested or any amount of European mistletoe is consumed, an abnormal heart rate and high blood pressure may develop

Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is highly toxic to pets even in small amounts. Pets are attracted to it by its sweet smell and taste. Some snow globes can also contajn ethylene glycol. Intact snow globes are perfectly safe, but if a snow globe is broken, ingestion of the liquid by a pet may lead to severe kidney damage and may be fatal.

With all the exciting new toys and electronics being unwrapped over the next week, be sure to keep batteries away from your pets, especially dogs. When chewed on or punctured, alkaline batteries leak a caustic substance that can burn your pet’s mouth, esophagus, or stomach. If your pet swallows a portion of a battery or a whole battery, it may also cause an obstruction or an intestinal blockage. Small disc batteries can also get lodged in your pet’s esophagus and cause burns if not punctured.

Sugar-free sweeteners: During the holidays, the presence or sugar-free sweeteners like xylitol in festive treats poses a significant danger to pets, particularly dogs. Accidental ingestion of xylitol-laden items can swiftly lead to a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels and potentially fatal complications. Symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs are associated with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) such as decreased activity, weakness, staggering, incoordination, collapse and seizures

Essential oils and potpourri: Essential oils pose a risk, as ingestion of them can cause oral irritation, ulcers or chemical burns, as well as difficulty breathing. If you do not want to use diffusers, limit them to large, well-ventilated rooms and out of reach from your pets. Dried potpourri can also be toxic depending on the types of plants that are in the potpourri. Even if the potpourri is not made of any toxic plants, the oil and plants that make up the potpourri, if ingested, may cause issues.

Lilies: You may receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers over the holidays, but be cautious about any that contain lilies, especially if you have a cat at home. Lilies are extremely toxic to cats - just a nibble of the leaves or petals, pollen, or ingestion of the water from the vase can cause acute kidney failure and may even be fatal.

Tinsel and other holiday decorations: Tinsel, yarn or ribbon, and string tied around the turkey are hazardous to pets that ingest them. Cats especially like to play with long stringy objects and their spiky tongues latch onto these items and do not let go. When ingested, one end can be anchored in the upper digestive tract, while the other end keeps trying to pass, bunching in the intestines. Some signs of a linear foreign body may include: vomiting, dehydration, decreased appetite, hiding, abdominal pain, and lethargy.

Turkey 🍗: It may be tempting to give your pet a taste of a holiday meal, but a rich fatty meal can cause vomiting and diarrhea and may cause pancreatitis. Pancreatitis cases are increased when turkey scraps are given to pets, especially to breeds predisposed to pancreatitis including Shetland Sheepdogs, Miniature Schnauzers, and Yorkshire Terriers. Bones should also be advoided, especialyl turkey bones. Poultry bones can easily splinter and may cause intestinal blockages or perforations.

We will be posting 12 days of holiday pet hazards to avoid in your pets these next few weeks leading up to Christmas!

Chocolate🍫: As the holiday season approaches, chocolate can be harmful for pets. Dogs are four times more likely to suffer from chocolate toxicity this time of the year. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is in higher levels in darker chocolate or baking chocolate. Symptoms can include vomiting, increased heart rate, sometimes agitation and restlessness. In high amounts it may cause seizures and it can also be fatal. It is also a concern if a dog ingests not only a large amount of chocolate, but also the chocolate wrappers that can act as a potential foreign body on the stomach.

Stay tuned for more holiday hazards!
