The sparkling gourami, Trichopsis pumila, are native to Southeast Asia. They can reach a length of 1.6 inches and have red, green and blue iridescent colouring. Their colouring will change depending on how the light is hitting as they swim in your aquarium.

They’re a beautiful fish, especially for dark water tanks, and are considered a peaceful community fish. It’s recommended to keep them in schools of 6 or more. These fish can also produce audible croaking noises when they’re sparring, breeding or are just generally excited. Come get yours today!

Gold Rams, also known as Gold Ram Cichlids, are a stunning colour variant of the German Blue Ram. True to their name, they’re gold and sometimes sport typical German Blue markings.

These fish are native to the Orinoco River basin in South America, where they inhabit slow-moving streams and rivers. In the aquarium hobby, these fish thrive in well-planted tanks with soft, slightly acidic water. Maintaining a temperature range between 78-85°F (26-29°C) and a pH range of 5.5-7 is crucial for their well-being and longevity. They should be kept in 20+ gallon tanks.

Gold rams will eat a variety of foods, including flake and pellets as well as frozen foods. They’re great in community tanks with smaller fish like corydoras, tetras and rasboras. This group came in looking incredible. Come and get yours today!!

We’ve got an early fish profile this week - the Black Emperor Tetra. These are a popular colour morph of the Emperor Tetra, Nematobrycon palmeri, which is endemic to the Atrato and San Juan river basins in Columbia.

Fun fact: The easiest way to tell males and females apart is their eye colour! Males have blue eyes while the females have green eyes.

It’s recommended to keep a school of 6+ for them to thrive. To promote optimal fish keeping practices, we offer 10% for 6 and 20% if you buy 12. Your fish will appreciate it and you’ll see the difference that having a school of these fish makes!

They thrive in warmer temperatures , 73-80°F (23-27°C), and slightly acidic to neutral water, pH 5.5-7.5.

This Friday fish profile features a breeding pair of Kribensis cichlids celebrating Valentine’s Day. The females develop a deep cherry-red belly during breeding. She has also cleaned up her coconut cave by moving sand and piling it out front.

These fish form monogamous pairs, with the female depositing eggs in the cave, the male fertilizing them and both parents guarding the eggs/fry.

They are a hardy fish with a wide pH range 5-8 and temperature preferences between 75–82°F (24–28°C). It is recommended to keep a pair in a 20+ gallon tank.

The betta boys have arrived. These solitary gentlemen like to be the ONLY betta in their aquarium. They can be kept with other community fish as long as they don’t have large/colourful fins that they could mistake for potential rivals.

A tip to anyone that has bought an especially feisty betta is to put it in a breeder box inside the tank. This helps acclimate them to the new tank without putting other fish at risk. I’ve had great results when introducing them to community tanks using this method . After a few days, if they aren’t flaring their gills, you can safely remove them from the breeder box and let them join the rest of your community.

Tank Parameter Recommendations:

Temperature: 24-29° C (76-85° F)
Tank size: 5+ gallons recommended
pH range: 6.5-7.5

Cherry shrimp originate from China and Taiwan. Their natural colouration is green-brown but through selective breeding a wide variety of colour morphs exist.

This colour variant is called ‘Yellow’ or ‘Yellow Laser’ because of the solid yellow line that stretches along the back of their bodies.

A colony of these dwarf shrimp should be kept in a 5+ gallon tank as they reach roughly 1.6 inches when fully grown and breed readily in good conditions. They’re a hardy shrimp that is perfect for beginners as they tolerate a wide temperature (18-29°C) and pH range (6.2-8).

This week’s belated Friday fish, the Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, is endemic to the Mamberamo River basin in West Papua, Indonesia. They are one of the most popular rainbowfish in the aquarium hobby.

This species reaches 2 inches inches in length, on average, with males tending to be brighter in colour. Their bodies are an iridescent bright blue with males sporting red fins while the females sport yellow fins.

It is recommended to keep these fish in a tank size of 15+ gallons as they’re best kept in groups of 6 or more with a female to male ratio of 2:1. This ratio is recommended to limit infighting and avoid any aggression from the males.

They’re great tank mates for any type of community freshwater fish and thrive in temperatures between 23–28° C (72–82° F) and a pH of 6.8-7.5.

The first and second pictures respectively display a male and female dwarf neon rainbowfish. The third and fourth pictures are a group of them feeding on some tubifex worms.

Today’s fish profile features a pair of new parents, some Lake Turkana Jewel Cichlids, Rubricatochromis exsul. From what I’ve seen so far, they both make wonderful parents and rear their fry together.

These ruby-peach coloured fish have black fins spangled with metallic blue. Unlike other jewel cichlids, these fish are considered MUCH more peaceful and only grow to 3-4 inches. Adequate territory is necessary if you would like to attempt to breed these fish, since they will become more aggressive when attempting to breed. For that reason, a 29+ gallon tank is recommended for them. These little cichlids love a sand or gravel substrate with lots of hiding places, like rocks or caves, that mimic their natural habitat.

They can be kept in community tanks with similarly sized tetras, danios, African cichlids, rainbowfish and synodontis catfish. Water temperatures between 23-28°C (73–82°F) and a pH between 7-8 are recommended for these fish to thrive.

Pterophyllum scalare, the freshwater Angelfish, come from the Amazon basin in Brazil, Columbia and Peru. This profile features the Tri-Colour or Koi Angelfish, which is just one of over 20 colour variations! These beautiful fish are arrowhead shaped with triangular dorsal and pelvic fins. In the shop, you’ll see them at a size of 2-3 inches in diameter but be aware that they grow to 6” tall and 4” wide and require a tank size of 20+ gallons for a pair of adults.

They are a relatively peaceful fish that are best kept with other South American fish like Corydoras, Neon Tetras, Plecostomus and Discus. Angelfish are happiest in temperatures between 75°F-84°F (24-29°C) with pH 6.5-7.5.

When they reach maturity, angelfish form monogamous pairs. They’re known to form long-term relationships and are great parents.

The first two pictures are our stocked Koi angelfish ($11.99) and the third picture is an angelfish guarding their fry (baby fish).

Meet the adorable, little, AGGRESSIVE and TERRITORIAL Pea Pufferfish! The all-caps text is there for a reason. These little beasts are best kept in a species-only tank, as they’re known to try taking a bite of just about everything that swims their way. Also known as the Indian dwarf puffer, dwarf pea puffer, Malabar or Pygmy puffer; they only grow to one inch in size making them the worlds smallest pufferfish!

This oddball species is recommended for intermediate fish keepers because it’s species-only designation and its strictly carnivorous diet requires frozen or live foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

They can be kept in 5 gallon tanks but you should upgrade the size if you want to keep a group of them. They prefer a temperature between 74-80 °F (23-28 °C) and a pH of 6.8-7.8.

They can puff up when stressed, however, it’s not recommended to stress them out to the point where they puff up. No one wants a stressed out pet!

Happy Fish Friday!

Today’s profile features the Blue-Eyed Lemon Bristlenose Plecostomus, L144a.  Luckily the hardest thing about keeping these fish is remembering their full name. Plecostomus, or Plecos, are also known as sucker-mouth catfish. Originating in South America, they sport a yellow-coloured body with blue eyes and grow bristle’s around their mouth when they reach adulthood. These peaceful catfish are a great addition to any community tank of 30+ gallons.

Lemon Blue-Eyes are omnivores and will feed on uneaten fish food, algae/algae wafers and even certain vegetables! They get to a maximum size of 4-5 inches, prefer a water temperature of 22° - 26° C (72° - 79° F) and slightly acidic pH of 6.5-7.5.

The first two pictures are our current stock and the adult pictures are courtesy of Aquatic Arts based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

It’s Fish Friday again! But did you know we also sell invertebrates? This is the Gold Mystery snail, also known as the spike-topped apple snail. They’re native to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru. Mystery snails love to cruise around on your glass, cleaning algae along the way. Some fun facts about them: They can regenerate their eyes and they also possess gills AND lungs, which allow them to breathe in and out of water. Come on down and grab one of these little speedsters today 🐌
