Happy's Place needs your help. Alittle goes along ways to helping Senior and Palliative dogs.

With 17 new senior dogs joining us here this past week and the others on their way into care tomorrow and this weekend too, (as well as all of the others currently already in care) we are officially saying CLOSED for any new intakes for a bit. We started out with room for 20 dogs when we opened in 2019, increased it to 25 in 2020 and currently will have 43 senior dogs in 2023 in our care as of this weekend- all off of euthanasia lists and tucked safely into foster homes.

Without even counting any dental surgeries, spays/neuters, x-rays, and other surgeries (we've got bladder stones to remove, masses of all sorts to remove, and specialized services to do), the intakes alone for these 17 dogs will run us around $6000.00 (4dx, bloodwork, head to tail checks, urinalysis, vaccines, and more).

We are very full right now and just trying to keep our heads above water. The demands on rescue and of dogs at risk of euthanasia- I've never seen anything like this before. We are all trying our best.

To be responsible, we need to just put a pause on intake related things so that we can be sure to properly vet and provide medical for the ones currently in care.

PS- senior dogs are EXPENSIVE to get ready for adoption. Our fee to adopt is a mere $450.00 which is a drop in the bucket of what it costs to get them ready. We receive no government funding and are all 100% volunteer run.

So how can you help? Share our posts, host a fundraiser for us, make a donation, and attend our own fundraisers too. We've got some really cool things coming up over the next few months and we hope you'll join us too.

Take a look at our most current fundraiser happening right NOW!

We've joined forces with our friends over at Heart & Hygge Jewelry Co. to create EXCLUSIVE Happy's Place Keychains available by online purchase from April 27-May 8 only. Once the sale closes- they're gone! So get yours today.

Please share this post, it explains why hot days can be fatal to dogs!
When you read or hear about the bulldog-type, short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds having more trouble with the heat, you may wonder why. On a good day, with moderate temperatures, they have a much more difficult time moving air to their lungs because of their anatomy.
This picture shows the back of the mouth of a long-nosed dog on the left (a collie-retriever cross) and a short-nosed dog on the right (a pug). You can see that this area is compressed and limited in the pug. Pugs, Bulldogs (all types), Bostons, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese, etc. all have this anatomy. The space is even more limited when they are overweight or obese.
When it is hot, dogs can only cool themselves by panting. Excessive panting leads to swelling in the back of the mouth and throat. This swelling makes it even more difficult for the brachycephalic breeds to breath and they can suffocate.
In fact, any dog can succumb to heat stroke or compromised breathing so PLEASE DO NOT exercise or leave dogs outside in the sun or in cars when it is hot. They trust us to make good choices and take care of them!

“So this happened in Montana. I'm on my way to go to my interview this morning when I get pulled over by a police officer.

I am native American and my friend that was with me is black. Just saying.

Both brake lights decided to go out this time.

As he walked to the car and I was pulling out my stuff, he quickly said,

"Don't worry about pulling anything out. I just want you to know that your brake lights are out."

So I'm immediately upset, because I just got them replaced like last month.

So I explained to him how Firestone wants to charge me $600 just to run a test on the wiring of the car.

He looked at me like 😨 and told me to pop the trunk.

He checked the lights in the trunk and tapped them, but they didn't come on.

So he told me to pop the hood to check the relay box then asked me to get out to check the other one.

Then worked on the wiring under the dash.

He could've easily given me a ticket, but Officer Jenkins stepped out of officer role, and into mechanic role, and human role to make sure I was straight.

By the way HE FIXED THEM."

Anchovies: Small but Pack a Nutritional Punch! 🐟🥊⭐

When buying anchovies for your pet, look for uncured and unsalted anchovies – they’re the healthiest. 👍 If you can only find canned anchovies, opt for those packed in water or olive oil, with no added salt

Check out today’s free pet blog on our new website (link in the comments) to learn more about how to choose correct anchovies for pets.

The severely matted pet. Professional groomers see these cases more often than we would like. They can be heartbreaking because we understand the pain and disease that often accompany these cases. Here are a few things to understand about matted coats:

1. Severely matted coats cannot simply be 'brushed out'. Yes, a few matts that are not matted to skin can be brushed out, but sever matting means shaving. There is not an option to 'leave the coat fluffy' because clipper blades must pass under matts not through them. This often means a very short shave.
2. When the coat is severely matted, often referred to as pelted, the coat cannot properly regulate body temperature. Both canines and felines use thermoregulation to keep the body cool or warm depending on the weather. This means the body struggles much harder to maintain normal temperature.
3. Matted coats are almost always accompanied by some type of skin disease. Matting holds excess moisture and bacteria and/or fungus near the skin. As the natural microbiome is decreased, the skin becomes susceptible to infection from these diseases.
4. Matted coats are painful and that's a fact. The extra weight pulls on the skin causing discomfort. When matting is present around legs, ears, or tail, proper movement can become impeded and painful. This is why we term this 'neglectful abuse'. This type of matting does not occur overnight.

If your pet's coat has gotten out of control, contact your professional groomer NOW. The longer you wait, the worse it will be and the more the pet suffers.

I am getting alot of "OMG my dog/cat has been sprayed by a skunk.... I only let it out for a minute (at 11 pm)...what do I do"? So... here it is again. NAIL THIS TO YOUR FRIG AND MAKE SURE YOU READ IT!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone

Every year around this time, for whatever reason, skunks start moving around more. Therefore, more dogs get nailed by that ‘eau de peppy la pew’ perfume. The skunk’s spray is an oil which can be absorbed quickly by the dogs skin. Water and oil do not mix! Never EVER put water on a dog that has been sprayed by a skunk!

What do I do then?

Well, if the dog gets sprayed then he will want to come in immediately, very panicky and upset. DON’T LET HIM IN.

Take the time to get yourself organized to deal with the situation first. If you allow them in you will have a bigger mess on your hands then you can possibly imagine.

Decide where you are going to bathe him?

What are you going to use?

Where are the towels, garbage bags?

Where is the bottle of Natural Tears to put in his eyes to help with the stinging?

Are you wearing clothes you can throw out?
In other words, get your game plan together FIRST, before you go get the dog. Yes he is freaking out but he’s not rubbing all the oil onto your carpet, bed spread and anything else he can find.

Also, put all food in the frig, leave nothing out on the counters as it will absorb the smell and will then have to be thrown out.

If there is snow on the grown, flip a coin to decide who is going to go and put a leash around the dog so he doesn’t rub in the snow. SNOW IS WATER.

If you have a bottle of SKUNK OFF, you are ready to go.

If you have the mixture recipe of Dawn, Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda, go get it ready.

In a pail mix:
• 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide variety)
• ¼ cup baking soda
• 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid
If you have a large breed dog, you may need to double, triple or even quadruple the mixture.
Wear dishwashing or other household gloves if you like during the whole de-skunking process.
Don't wet down your pet. Apply the mixture to his/her dry coat from the collar back toward the tail. Use a sponge when washing the face as to not get it in their eyes.
Lather the mixture into their coat and skin. Rub the solution around for about five minutes or until the skunk smell starts to dissipate.
If the front of your pet is as stinky as the back, use a sponge to apply the solution to your pet's chin, cheeks, forehead and ears, being very careful not to go near the eyes. When you rinse the head area, tilt your pet's chin downward so the solution does not run into the eyes. You may need to repeat the lather and rinse process up to three times, but it's a very effective method for removing the skunk smell from your pet.
Do a diluted vinegar rinse once the smell starts to decrease, then repeat the entire process again.
Make sure to completely rinse the solution off your pet. Your final rinse should be very thorough.
You can't prepare this solution ahead of time and store it – it won't be effective when you need it. It must be made fresh, right before you apply it to your pet. So it pays to make sure you have all the ingredients ahead of time!

PRINT THIS OFF AND HAVE IT HANDY – LIKE ON THE FRIG!

BE PREPARED!!!!!

As we enter the season of Spring and one day soon....warm weather, everything is going to begin thawing. This means alot of puddles, standing water etc. This water is runoff and contains everything from animal/dog urine and f***s to chemicals from the lawns to garbage and god knows what else. Try if you can, to deter your dog from drinking out of these puddles. For the most part their gut can sort all the bacteria and everything else out itself but for some it can cause serious illness resulting in a trip to the vet. Now as I write this I am watching Charlotte, who walked right past a beautiful clean bowl of water on her way to drink from a puddle. For everyone who knows Charlotte, she is 14 and hasn't been sick a day in her life. Maybe she's got it right and I don't know what I'm talking about...but maybe...she's the exception!

WANT TO HELP YOUR DOG LIVE LONGER? TRY THIS!🍵🐶

When designing our blueprint📝 on how-to raise the oldest dogs in the world for our new book, The Forever Dog, we focused our research heavily on science-based longevity foods, herbs & supplements that can be added to your dog’s diet. Foods that could not only help delay canine aging, but can help nourish and bullet-proof💥 your dog against disease!

No matter which longevity scientist we interviewed, the one suggestion that made every researcher’s top 10 list of what to add to a dog’s bowl was “camellia sinensis,” aka Green Tea!🍃

In fact, the latest study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows people who drink green tea at least three times a week can live longer and suffer a lower risk of cardiovascular disease!

That’s because Green Tea is rich in polyphenols, and contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which are found to help prevent cell damage, reduce inflammation and can help fight cancer while providing other health benefits, of course.

But what about dogs? Are there any studies? Shockingly, we found a bunch!
The most recent showed that Green Tea🍵 acts as a therapeutic agent for obesity, liver inflammation, and fat degeneration in dogs!

While many of us make juices or smoothies, most of us don’t think about using concentrated medicinal infusions in our food. But in the dog world, medicinal teas make inexpensive, polyphenol-rich toppers (“gravies”) that infuse longevity benefits into every meal. So, it should come as no surprise that green tea has been used in pet food for quite some time, but not in quantities to confer health benefits, so why not add some at home?

All teas can be steeped as usual, then cooled off prior to adding to your dog’s food. Green teas should be decaffeinated, and preferably organic.

Alternatively, add warm tea to your dog’s dry food and allow the therapeutic brew to marinate with the kibble prior to feeding, creating a super-saucy gravy and adding hydration (dogs aren’t designed to eat low-moisture, dried food their whole lives; teas help!). If you feed dehydrated or freeze-dried dog food, reconstitute them prior to feeding with tea!

Recipe for Organic Decaf Green Tea🍵 for Pets🐾:

1.Combine 3 cups of purified water and 1 tea bag or 1 tablespoon of loose tea leaves🫖
2.Steep for 15 minutes
3.Remove the tea bag or use a strainer to remove the tea leaves🍃
4.Store the tea in a covered, preferably glass pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days

Add the following amounts of decaf green tea to your pet’s morning and evening meal:

• Cats — 1 tablespoon
• Small dogs — 1/8th cup
• Medium dogs — ¼ to ½ cup
• Large dogs — ½ to 1 cup

This is one simple and powerful way to add longevity benefits to your dog’s bowl! Looking for more ideas or recipes? Check out our new book with dozens of other suggestions in the Forever Fluids section of our book, available for pre-order now by clicking here: www.foreverdog.com/book
