Right now, seven precious puppies - just eight weeks old - are fighting for their lives.
As you may know from our email on April 8th, these orphaned puppies were given their health exams, deworming and their first set of vaccines. All appeared to be going smoothly.
But then, things changed, fast!
The puppies began to decline. Lethargy; vomiting; severe diarrhea. Tests confirmed what we feared most. They had become seriously ill with Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) a highly contagious, at times fatal disease, most often seen in puppies and young unvaccinated dogs.
We acted immediately.
The puppies received treatment—antibiotics, anti-nausea medication and subcutaneous fluids multiple times a day and were closely monitored by a veterinarian and our team of Registered Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Attendants.
Despite the outpatient treatment, five of the puppies declined further and stopped eating entirely. Needing immediate hospitalization with aggressive care, they were admitted to three different emergency veterinary hospitals over the Easter long weekend.
Two of these five puppies became so weak they required feeding tubes to deliver nutrition directly to their stomachs.
The cost of this life-saving care? $15,000.
Without immediate intervention, these puppies would not have survived. And while they’ve made it this far, they are not out of danger yet.
But there is hope. With your support, we can continue to provide life-saving care not only to these puppies, but to all the other animals at OMHS who rely on us.
OMHS relies entirely on donations to provide the care, comfort and medical treatment animals need. Your compassionate support gives these seven puppies, and so many others, a real chance to heal, grow and find the safe and loving homes they deserve. Thank you to those who gave so generously to our last appeal, and to those who will now dramatically change the course of these puppies’ lives for the better.
Donate now at omhs.ca/care to raise funds for the life-saving care of these puppies and so many other vulnerable animals in need.
