Less is more! The less you talk to your dog, the more your dog will listen to you. I’m not saying that you can’t ask a dog about their day or tell them about yours; this is in regard to commands. We need to keep those commands meaningful and not water them down. The biggest one being “Come”. It could potentially save your dog's life, so it’s important to keep it full of meaning.
Here are the four commands that I use when on an off-leash hike:
“Hey” - slow up or pause
“Leave it” - step away from the coyote poop
“Come” - I like to use "come" within a hike when a dog hits a 30-foot radius from me, I ask for a recall so they’ll eventually stay at that radius (for life)
“On trail” - when a dog ventures off the trail into the woods and I don’t want to deal with porcupine quills.

Once a dog gets used to absorbing sounds smells and movement without reacting to them inside the house they become more compose dog outside.
Your relationship with your dog starts inside the house and then translates out 💙

If you have a dog that gets anxious or nervous in certain situations, it's important to advocate for their personal space. You should try to create some distance between your dog and whatever is causing them to feel uneasy, and only move closer when they seem more comfortable. It's never a good idea to leave it up to your dog to handle difficult situations on their own. By taking charge and handling the situation for them, you'll help build their confidence and let them know you have their back.
