Reposting this again. Angela Martin was my roomie when I went to Kansas many years ago to study animal chiropractic and has captured so well how I feel about my job. Couldn't possibly say it better. I am so blessed to do the work that I do. Thanks Ange. ❤️❤️❤️

I am your … I drive backroads every weekend searching for your barn to care for your horses. I rarely get lost, but get messed up by the GPS lady about which turns to make, how far to drive, where to go next. Scheduling the route is a hidden talent of mine.

I touch hundreds of horses and I love each one of them. This chiro thing is much more than my job, it's my life. I do more than crack backs and realign spines. I soothe them, help them be confident and relax under pressure, trust and assure them life will be okay.

I am the one who is often called last for complicated cases, for no-one-can-find-it unsoundness, for recoveries that aren’t all there yet and for creaky old mares. The last line of defence … and I almost always deliver. But I should be in your starting line up for movement, health and performance. I want to help to make your horse and you comfortable, sound, and happy for all your days.

I pet your dogs, play with your kids, help you fix your barn. I’ve helped you catch horses, worm them, and even deliver a foal or two and not once did I charge your for these little extras. I'm happy to help.

My hands are sore and swollen each day, yet gentle and kind. Many times I hurt for you. My feet ache from the steel toes that protect me but don’t flex when I jump from floor to base and back again 30 plus times a day and yet you never know I hurt or how sore and stiff and tired I am. I will endure the pain because this is more than my job or my work, it's who I am. It fulfills me.

I see happy, well cared for horses with bright sunny stalls and I see horses mired in muck and urine. I work with healthy, happy horses and horses who have given every ounce of their heart and soul for your pleasure. I rarely see horses that, through ignorance or neglect, are misused, abused and unhappy … but when I do it’s because someone with a heart wants to change that life story to love, respect and joy and has rescued them from a dark place.

It is my greatest joy to return a broken being back to happy and whole.
I wish more people could see that’s what I really do…

I am your animal chiropractor. I’ve watched your kids grow, I’ve seen your life bloom. I’ve been there when tragedy struck and when you experienced the happiness I wish for you always.

A warm or cool dry place with level ground is all I ask for most of the time. For your horses to stand quietly and to be paid on time.
When you think of me, think of the long hours, the hot days, the rain and snow, think of the good things I’ve done with you and your horse.

Think of me as a professional. Think of me as a caring, sincere person who truly wants the best for you and your horse.

You've never paid me for the adjustments my hands give or the muscles I’ve relaxed, you pay me for the wisdom and experience I have. I thirst for that wisdom and I hunger to share it with you.

I am proud of what I do and my promise to you is this, I will do my best to help your horse and be honest with how I can. I may not be the perfect solution or the most cost-effective in the short term. But for life-long investment, I am your animal chiropractor and you always get my heart’s care along with my magic hands.

Love a happy ending!!! Looks like Flex is safe and home with his loving family.

After a days-long search spanning kilometres around Bragg Creek, Alta., a championship endurance horse was reunited with his family.

I love this so much. And its relevant to every horse sport and every interaction we have with horses. How lucky are those of us who get to interact this them?

Imagine you’re assigned a partner project in school. Only one of you gets to read the directions for the assignment, and then you have to explain it to your partner in a language that is secondary to both of you. You’d expect some miscommunications and misunderstandings, right?

That’s basically what’s happening while riding a horse. Whether in a lesson or a ride of your own direction, you as the rider are the only one who knows the assignment. It’s then your responsibility to relay that information to your horse, speaking through intention and cues that are a second language to both you and your horse. Your horse doesn’t understand what your trainer is saying he’s supposed to do - he’s relying on you to tell him.

Keep this in mind any time you’re riding and you feel like your horse isn’t listening, or you get frustrated with a missed distance or a sloppy transition. Remember that you’re the only member of this team who knows the assignment, and your horse is relying on you to tell him the game plan. Sometimes we make mistakes in our cues or our timing, we start thinking too many steps ahead or we forget to clue him into the next movement in time. Sometimes the horse is a little distracted, or tired, or not feeling it today. But most of the time, he’s doing his best he can with the information you’re giving him!

Dogs (or one very special dog) also play a very important role on the human side of my clinic. Kanga is a Certified Therapy Dog who works alongside Alison Varga Ali Varga in some of her sessions as our amazing Psychologist. And Kanga is my (not-so-secret) favourite practitioner in the clinic. Today also happens to be Kanga's 10th birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the bestest girl ❤️❤️❤️

Kanga is a certified therapy dog and ABHC’s most loved practitioner! You may have seen her at the clinic with Alison, our Registered Provisional Psychologist and Counselling Therapist. Happy birthday to Kanga from all of us at ABHC.
