This during and Animal Pain Awareness Month, we are bringing attention to recognizing pain in small mammal species. Exotics are known to hide signs of discomfort and illness so identifying any kind of behaviour change may be life-saving. Lethargy and decreased appetite are most commonly seen, but changes in personality, teeth grinding and self-mutilation can be noticed as well.

Early detection of sickness in exotic mammals is crucial. Regular observation and knowledge of your pet’s normal behavior and appearance are key. If you notice any of these signs, or any other unusual symptoms, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms - surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as β€œgetting old” or β€œslowing down.” Old age is NOT a disease, but pain is. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including oral and injectable pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage.
Speak with one of our veterinarians to learn more about options that would be best for your pets!

First human case of Rabies in Ontario since 1967 was identified recently via direct contact with a bat. Bats in all areas of Ontario are known to carry Rabies.

You can check your pets' Rabies vaccination status on the PetDesk app or contact us if you are unsure of your pets' Rabies vaccination status.

The Health Unit offered up these tips to keep yourself and your pets safe:

- Under law, people must keep their pets and livestock rabies vaccinations up to date.
- Do not touch unfamiliar animals.
- Keep pets away from wildlife.
- Supervise children when they are around animals.
- Don't let pets roam free outdoors.
- Feed pets inside as food outdoors can attract unwanted animals.

If anyone comes into direct contact with a bat or an animal known to carry rabies and if that animal bites or scratches a person, they are warned to immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention.

Stay safe!

Oh look, it's dental disease! How often do you lift up your pets' gums to evaluate the health of their gums and teeth? Early dental dental disease can be reversed with diligent at-home care and routine cleaning, but more chronic or severe cases with bone loss may require extraction of the affected teeth.

Starting today, these are the new requirements for bringing dogs into the United States:
1. The dog must be at least 6 months old at the time of entry
2. The dog must have a microchip that can be read by a universal scanner to identify them
3. The dog must appear healthy upon arrival
4. The dog owner must complete the new online CDC Dog Import Form for each dog. It is free.

Notably, there isΒ no longer any requirement for proof of rabies vaccination for dogs travelling from low-risk countries, but remember that proof of current rabies vaccination is still required for dogsΒ returningΒ to Canada from the US.

More information is available from the CDC at https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html and from the CFIA at https://inspection.canada.ca/en/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/exports/pets/dogs-usa

One more reason to keep your pets up to date on their Rabies vaccinations. Stay safe this summer if you're out and about and be wary of the wildlife. πŸ¦‡

A Little Brown from has tested positive for after the creature was submitted for testing on Wednesday, July 24, as part of an investigation into a potential human exposure.

The person involved is receiving post-exposure treatment, which will prevent a rabies infection.

This animal rabies case is the first in Grey Bruce this year. We're advising the public to remain vigilant about the risk of rabies:

βœ… Always refrain from touching, petting, or handling
βœ… Avoid approaching or feeding wild animals.
βœ… Keep pets away from wild animals and do not let roam unsupervised; and have your pets vaccinated for rabies
βœ… Wildlife-proof homes, , and yards.
βœ… Do not disturb baby animals.
βœ… Warn children to stay away from wild or stray animals.
βœ… Do not trap and transport wild animals to a new location.
