Last but not least, we are featuring Natalie this week for ! She has been a Registered Veterinary Technician for 6 years and has worked with a variety of animals including birds, reptiles and wildlife! Her special interests include exotic companion animal care, nutrition and performing dental cleanings.

"RVTs have a unique career pathway that is different from the role of the veterinarian. It allows us to perform a variety of roles in the vet clinic. In addition to being a nurse, we are also surgical technicians, anesthesiologists, x-ray technicians, phlebotomists, lab technicians & more! RVTs can advance their careers & acquire a veterinary technician specialty (VTS) in fields such as dentistry, nutrition, behaviour & others. "

This week for RVT month, we are shining the spotlight on Michelle, our lead Registered Veterinary Technician! She has been for 6 years, with a passion and special interest in anesthesia and pain management in pets. 🐢🐱🐰

"Being a Registered Veterinary Technicians is important to me as it recognizes the hard work and dedication to practicing the best standard of medicine. Being an RVT means that you have completed the 2 year college degree as well as passing a national exam. To keep up with registration, we must complete continuing education and stay up to date with the latest studies and information."

October is RVT month, where we celebrate the role Registered Veterinary Technicians play in taking care of your pets! We are highlighting one of our RVTs each week, starting with Lindsay! She was a tech student with us before officially joining the team following graduation from Georgian College.

"One of my favourite parts about being a vet tech is being a part of surgeries and seeing pets' lives improve afterwards. For example, performing dental cleanings and radiographs and hearing that pets are eating better, are more energetic and have an improved lifestyle following the procedure 🦷πŸͺ₯⭐️❀️"

This during and Animal Pain Awareness Month, we are bringing attention to recognizing pain in small mammal species. Exotics are known to hide signs of discomfort and illness so identifying any kind of behaviour change may be life-saving. Lethargy and decreased appetite are most commonly seen, but changes in personality, teeth grinding and self-mutilation can be noticed as well.

Early detection of sickness in exotic mammals is crucial. Regular observation and knowledge of your pet’s normal behavior and appearance are key. If you notice any of these signs, or any other unusual symptoms, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms - surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as β€œgetting old” or β€œslowing down.” Old age is NOT a disease, but pain is. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including oral and injectable pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage.
Speak with one of our veterinarians to learn more about options that would be best for your pets!
