Friday's bonded pair have been in care 464 days. Siblings of Lux and Lennox, hi-lited yesterday they are cared for in another foster home. Exhibiting the same traits they to deserve the best home with an adopter who will work with their timeline. This pair is $500.00. As with all our bonded pairs they are not 'on sale' We just want them to stay together.
***AVAILABLE****
Name: Laurel, Louis
Gender: F, M
Breed: DMH, DSH
Est. DOB: July 1, 2023
Good with cats: yes
Good with kids: older cat savvy
Good with dogs: unknown
Litter trained: yes
It was a big adventure last week. They went to the vet for their annual check-up and vaccinations. Certified health and Laurel slightly plump. Their foster Mom was so proud of them. They were so well behaved. Playful and affectionate they now seek out belly rubs and pets. Louis is happiest in a lap where he can be brushed and adored. He will look up and give the tiniest of meows waiting to be picked up. Since the vet visit, inside of regressing Laurel seems less hesitant. Maybe she realizes there is nothing to be scared of 'out there' They will always have a home with OKR but adopted is always so much better than fostered.
Could you win them over? Ready for a challenge? Check out our pinned adoption post.

WOOHOO! The recent adoption of another pair of bonded cat siblings is cause for celebration. They were in care for a long time just like me and my sister. We have been in care 463 days. It gives us hope that our forever person is out there too!
I'm Lennox and my gorgeous gray sister is Lux. Maybe you've read about us week after week and followed our journey since we came in from the cold in October 2023. That's right, I said 2023!
We are now content house cats who enjoy human company. I like to use my peeping voice to get your attention. Lux usually just flops down belly up for attention, but she has started using her voice too. She thinks she knows everything (like all sisters), but maybe she is learning something from me after all.
If we're being totally honest, it's hard not to get down sometimes and wonder why we haven't been adopted. Our foster parents shower us with love, but a rescue's goal is to find us a great home and then help other cats in need. We are so ready for that HOME! The ending to our own rescue success story needs to be written!! If you would like to meet Lux and Lennox fill check out our adoption process post and complete and application.

Remember our little boy Gizmo posted yesterday? He is being fostered with this lovely trio. He could be adopted with any one of these little ladies. In a perfect world they would be adopted as two pairs. We dare to dream.

This sister trio was born outside last year and are now lovely, easy indoor kitties (although still getting used to household noises/activity). All are spayed vaccinated, microchipped and healthy. They all have very dense fur they like their foster to brush, and large golden eyes. You might only hear adorable tiny little peeps and meeps from them! They all get along (playing, playfighting and grooming) but no bonded pairs are evident.
FOSTER UPDATE: The Winter Spice sisters continue to blossom! They've now met their co-foster boyfriend Gizmo without issue.
NUTMEG- grey tabby
This petite girl is the most confident and friendly in the family. She headbutts for pets and sometimes drools a tiny bit when she purrs and makes biscuits. She loves to chase and jump (impressively high and far) after wand toys!
CLOVE - black
The smallest of the two black cats has adorable spiked ear tips. She's shyer and more reserved than her tabby sister but once she trusts you, she loves getting pet all over and purrs and drools in delight.
ANISE - black
Anise was the last sister to be brought indoors and is a bit larger than Clove. She's an intriguing blend of confident and careful! She’s curious about new things and comes up to play or snooze near her trusted humans. She now comes up to you, rubs herself on items near you, and gives in to pets!

This is a long one

After Christmas, we received a desperate plea from another rescue for help with a cat facing imminent euthanasia due to a foreign body obstruction. Although we were already stretched thin financially from recent owner surrenders, we couldn’t ignore her situation. We were told she had only three hours before she would be put down. By the time we got back to them, the rescue had, luckily, already agreed to take her so that she wouldn’t be euthanized. We collectively decided to transfer her to our rescue, and she was moved to another hospital for more intensive care. Thankfully, in Ottawa, many rescues work closely together to make sure cats get the help they need. We work with this rescue often, helping each other out.

Our co-founder rushed to pick her up to transfer her to the hospital, as we were told she was in critical condition. She was very dehydrated, covered in green vomit all over her legs, very dull, and her blood values were not normal. She was immediately hospitalized for several days, receiving intravenous fluids and the life-saving care she needed. Thankfully, thanks to the intervention of our team and the amazing staff at Capital City, she was able to pass the obstruction without the need for surgery. This took several days of intensive care and medical intervention, and the ICU bills added up quickly. But we are so thankful that this care gave this kitten a chance at life!

After posting an update about her progress, we were shocked to learn that her previous owners now wanted her back. Despite their initial decision to surrender her, as they were going to euthanize her otherwise, they now claimed she was healthy and should be returned. They have made no mention of thanking us for saving her life and have instead issued several negative comments about our rescue. More troublingly, they are now threatening us, demanding the cat’s return without addressing the significant medical bills we incurred to save her—bills that remain unpaid.

In response to the owners' comments, we made the difficult decision to remove the social media posts we had shared about her recovery. This was done to protect the cat’s privacy and avoid further harassment. However, the situation remains difficult as the owners continue to misinterpret our efforts and ignore the fact that their decision to surrender her was based on the clear need for medical intervention.

As a rescue, we hesitate to accept owner surrenders because of situations like this. Ultimately, when we are asked to help or when a pet will be euthanized, we try everything in our power to save them, accepting the financial risk and the fact that they may or may not make it. We try to help out when we can, and it’s disheartening when our kindness in preventing the euthanasia of a pet is met with this kind of response.

This particular situation is even more disheartening because, as a third party in the surrender, we had no direct communication with the clinic or the owners. The surrender form was signed, and it was made clear that the cat’s survival depended on immediate medical intervention. To be threatened and criticized by those who had previously decided they could not care for her is beyond our comprehension.

We stand by our decision to help this cat, and we will not back down in the face of unfair demands. We are not a risk or loan service that takes on the emotional and mental stress of helping pets through illness or injury, with no certainty of the outcome. Many rescues shy away from owner surrenders for reasons like this, but we continue to step in when we can because we know that without intervention, many lives would be lost.

We are grateful for the ongoing support from our community and remain committed to saving as many lives as possible, no matter the challenges we face. We have been able to save many lives and help many people with owner surrenders. We often receive heartfelt thanks from very grateful individuals. We do not expect gratitude, but we do expect not to be made out to be the bad guys after saving a cat that the family decided to surrender so they wouldn’t have to euthanize her.

If you’ve stayed this long, thank you for reading and for your continued support. We do not tolerate harassment or slander and folks who choose to do so will be blocked.

Gizmo has now met his co-fostered girlfriends, the Winter Spices!😻 He loves exploring their cat room, playing tag and just being around them. He's mostly respectful but can get carried away (like many young males😹), so he's likely best with cats that are confident and can put him in his place when he's too eager.😉
He's a delightful, silly boy who could play for hours with toys (and non-toys). He loves humans—headbutting and flopping when he wants pets, following them around, playing hide and seek and tag (less-so now that he has cat friends). Once he's tired, he'll chill out pretty much anywhere, including near you for some pets (sometimes for a while, sometimes not).
He’s never ever aggressive but can give tiny love bites—he is still young and learning! He likes to show off his unique meow which sounds like a croak which is so cute!☺️

Mama Janice and her boys. Austin and Pablo did some training with their amateur wrestling team (tackled whichever kittens crossed their path, usually each other), and Tyrone enjoyed some indoor rock-climbing. .and Janice nurtured her love for tailoring! (started jumping on our laps and trying to groom our pants for some reason?)
Now that they're refreshed and motivated .the Backyardigans can bring their best selves to the office. Janice is friendly, curious, and a quick learner. Tyrone has grown to be energetic and brave, albeit a little dense. Pablo has learned to share with his coworkers, and Austin is just happy to go with the flow.
The Backyardigans are soaring to new heights (really tall cat trees), and are looking for their next career move soon! If you or someone you know has a job opening for them, please reach out!

While we breathe a sigh of relief that Roxy is home we must admit we are in a bit of a panic regarding our mounting vet bills. Whilst our veterinary partners are amazing and patient they have their own bills to pay and can't increase our credit limit. We understand that all of these plea posts can be annoying and that you would help if able. Please do not feel you have to just keep us in mind when you do have a few dollars you would like to contribute to our rescue.

Thank you for caring and thank you to those that have and will donate. Know that every penny flows right through to pay our bills.

UPDATE: Roxy has been discharged. Her foster tells us that she brought home a different cat - she is feeling so much better! 🙂. She complained on the drive home and is bright eyed, alert and playful. As a bonus she had a perfect bowel movement this morning. She has some healing to do and we will keep you in the loop. Thank you City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital for taking care of her 💗

Roxy did well overnight 💗 a nerf toy was removed. These are an incredibly common foreign object that causes a lot of issues in cats.
Please try to keep these out of your house if you have cats and especially ones that like to play with them

Roxy is not yet eating on her own and receiving her nutrients through the tube. This tube is also being used to check the fluid buildup in her stomach as this is an issue after removal of a foreign object.

We hope that she continues to improve throughout the day 💗

If you are able to help towards her life saving care we would be very grateful. Her invoice is going to be upwards of $5000 and we need all the help we can get as we are still paying off multiple other emergency bills 😓

While we wait for an update on our tabby girl we would like to formerly introduce Noah. A month ago he was in a dire situation. His owner surrendered him in the hope that he could be saved. Well look at him now. He is ready for his next life. Smart cat wrote his own bio!

Hi, I’m Noah! I’m a playful and loving guy who loves to chase toys—especially those bouncy spring ones. When I’m not zooming around, I’m all about cuddling and snuggling on your lap, soaking up pets and attention. I’m very affectionate, but sometimes I get a little overstimulated and might give a “love bite” to let you know I need a break. Because of this, I’d do best in a home with older kids.
If you’re looking for a sweet and playful companion, I could be the perfect fit for you!
Noah previously had a urinary obstruction. To reduce the likelihood of him obstructing again he will have to be remain on a vet prescribed wet food diet.

Ottawa Kitten Rescue

We welcome you all in support of our new feline rescue, Ottawa Kitten Rescue. For those that know us, it comes as no surprise that we would join forces to save the lives of kittens and cats in need.

Given we both have such a strong passion for helping animals, we felt there no better way to honour this passion than to start a rescue. And so, we introduce, with so much love and excitement in our hearts: Ottawa Kitten Rescue.

Ottawa Kitten Rescue will focus its efforts primarily on rescuing abandoned neonatal kittens and will extend care and support to pregnant cats and moms with kittens.

We would like to thank everyone for their support in our efforts and we can’t wait to begin this journey with you all❤️
