Muzzles get a bad rap - but they are a super valuable tool and any/all dogs could use this skill! So I don’t always teach them for a specific reason. Sometimes it’s just a good thing to do! Lots of people will say “my dog would never bite” Guess what - every dog can bite under the right circumstances. And maybe not humans but other dogs. For the vet, for the groomer, for the trainer or a safe way to introduce dogs that may be dog selective, reactive etc.
This is not a perfect video - but you get the point! The steps I took:
1. Lured her first into the muzzle and fed through the muzzle. I did this for two meals to get her used to putting her face into it.
2. Moved to waiting for her to interact with the muzzle in her own (even if she booped it) click and reward.
3. Waited her out longer until she put her whole snout into the muzzle, click and reward! (As seen in video)
Now I’ll start working on duration and clasping the straps together and then releasing. Muzzle conditioning is best done slow and steady! Fern is suuuuper smart.

Do you know the difference between your terminal, duration & release markers? What do you see here, tell me in the comments!⬇️
⬇️Teaching your dog new behaviours⬇️
Don’t jump ahead! It sounds simple - but we see it often, people often say they can’t get their dog to do this or that. Often your dog just needs you to help them understand! Break down the behaviour into small, easy steps that your dog can understand. You can use luring with food to help your dog’s motivation to do the behaviour and guide them into it with the lure. Reward for the small successes! Dogs will get frustrated and so will you if you move too quickly and don’t reward enough. You can use your body language to help as well, and eventually fade this away.
This goes for any behaviour, and once your dog has it 100% then you need to generalize it to different environments and situations. Just because your dog can do it at home, doesn’t mean they know how to do it elsewhere!
Good luck🤗
