Meet the new essentials group class crew!

Ryker - General - Dexter - (not pictured) Nallie and Felix

We had no reactions from any of the pups even though some are reactive (thanks to the engagement game) but lots of pulling and some excitement, so I’m looking forward to see how this class progresses!

I haven’t made an official post on working hours so here it is!

All work communications and emails will be responded to from Monday- Thursday 9am-4pm. After 4pm and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays I’ll be logged off of my phone for work unless something needs more immediate attention such as emails regarding my group classes!

Julie my assistant may respond to or send emails and invoices on the “days off” but please remember that it’s extremely unlikely you will hear from me during off-work hours so keep this in mind if you haven’t received a message back in a couple days!

If there are any urgent issues with current clients - Please call me and leave a voicemail if I don’t pick up, I’ll call back as soon as I can!

I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding!

We tested out where everyone was at with different textures, things that move and taught 2 paws and the nose touch for the next class activities!

We also started beginning stages of box feeding! Everyone did really well with this so I’m excited to see how everyone progresses over the next 4 weeks!

It’s time for miss Carmella’s intro post, She’s here for a 6 week B&T!

We will be working on Carmella’s anxiety/fearfulness when in new places, to people and to sudden sounds/movement, reactivity inside and outside, resource guarding to dogs, overall impulse control/ obedience and recall!

Carmella is the sweetest thing and today we had a big milestone as she got a bit silly and jumped on me in an exciting way to initiate engagement when we went outside! It was the cutest thing and although I didn’t get it on camera, I know I’ll see it more and more as time goes on!

I’m really looking forward to seeing her grow and come it off her shell even more!

Meet Mango and Stuki who you have probably seen many times before as they have been a boarding client for a long time!

Both are here for a 3 week board and train to work on reactivity, overall manners and confidence building!

They both are a great example of how dogs learn at different speeds and requires different training plansto help them reach their full potential! Stuki isn’t as eager to work and a much less confident dog her progress has been moving fairly slow whereas mango is always ready to learn and is much more confident so she has been making great strides so far!

It’s been a very long time since I have introduced myself on here and with many new followers I figured it’s time!

My name is Malasia and I started Tuckered out training in 2022 officially!

I named my business after Tucker (sable cardigan corgi) who was my first dog that I got on my own (with my partner Trevor) in 2021. I was working in a doggy day care at the time and I brought tucker to work with me everyday since he was a tiny pup. This among many other things led to his reactivity to dogs and some strangers (specifically men)

During that time I got my animal behaviour college dog trainer certification and started researching a tone about behaviour, dog body language, proper socialization and more.

As my knowledge grew, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to dogs and learn to be the best trainer and handler not only so I can help people and there dogs but also for my own dogs too.

Since then Tucker, my partner Trevor and I grew from a family of 3 to 7, we have moved many times but are now in a beautiful home with 30 acres and have fostered over 10 dogs! I recently finished a mentorship program with Walk with me Ottawa where I learned a lot more on a deeper level, I do many different sports with my dogs such as agility, dock diving, scent, ratting and competitive obedience and I plan on getting another dog in the near future for PSA!

Our life has changed so much in the last 3 going onto 4 years and when I said a long time ago that I knew I was going to dedicate my life to dogs.. well I wasn’t kidding! but I wouldn’t have it any other way, (other then the never ending fur.. I’d be okay without that lol)

I continue to learn and grow as time goes on and I’m forever grateful for everything that’s come my way and to all my amazing clients who’s helped me live out my dream of working with dogs!

Many know Ireland as she’s been a regular for a very long time but I’d now like to also introduce her mom Julie!

Julie is officially my assistant and I couldn’t be more excited to have her on my team! She started earlier this week and has already been an incredible help!

Julie has a large passion for rescue dogs and has spent many years fostering and being a co-president for a volunteer based rescue in Ottawa! She has 2 rescue dogs herself, Ireland (in the photo), and Peanut who’s a little terrier mix!

Moving forward she will slowly be taking over more admin jobs so that I can do what I do best and that’s working, caring and playing with dogs!

Miss clover and I joined a drop In class and held!

It’s one of my favourite things as a dog trainer to go back to just being the “client”, having guidance through drills and not having to think but just do and enjoy my dog!

With the busy life of owning a business plus being the only trainer/care taker, my time gets taken up very quickly and making time for my own 5 dogs is often a struggle!

In the new year my goal is to make a large effort in prioritizing them a bit more and having a better work/life balance!

Miss clover did great and although started off unsure, she became a very confident girl around the other dogs/handlers!

Let’s talk about on leash greetings!

It’s believed by many that to socialize your dog you should meet lots of people and dogs, which is usually done on leash.

It’s normal nowadays for most people to assume every person and their dog wants to say hello so these greetings are often forced.

The issue with this is, most dogs either don’t want to say hello or they are so excited to say hello that they are dragging their owner over to go smother the other dog. This isn’t beneficial for anyone!

No matter which end of the spectrum your dog leans towards… it’s bound to create behaviour problems.

To dog handlers - Vouch for your dog even if you don’t have the confidence to do so, fake it till you make it because your dog counts on you to look out for them. Do your best to stay calm and prevent the interaction which will not only strengthen your relationship with your dog but also keep them safe and confident.

Now this all brings me to Dorris, the dog in the photo. During an outing on their street a while back, a person came over quickly and reached out to Dorris unexpectedly, Dorris reacted and nipped (no blood drawn). She’s not a dog who wants to bite or that I’d consider aggressive, she only reacted because her space wasn’t respected and this person was very close in proximity which caused the nip to make contact.

Her owners are putting in a huge amount of work and Dorris has made incredible strides. However, she would be so much further if it was widely recognized that we should mind our business and respect the space of unknown dogs, by leaving them be.

Dorris still has some progress to go, but I’m SO proud of the work her owners have put in! Today we went to the carps market, sat outside of it and just watched people/ dogs/ kids go by. She did really well!!
