Marty 🤎
His mom contacted me when Marty stopped acting like his usual self.
He’d gotten a new buddy, Molly, about 6 months prior. Then seemingly overnight, Marty changed.
He stopped playing, no more bedtime snuggles, he was eating less and hiding a lot. Often times he would survey the area on top of the stacked washer/dryer.
After recommending a thorough vet check to make sure there was nothing physically wrong with Marty, I went in to assess what was going on in the home.
Marty appeared stressed and depressed.
Molly was taking over everything and their resources were shared.
I worked with their person to move some things around.
1. Move food and water away from the litter boxes. Nobody wants to eat where they p**p, right 💩😉
2. Separate food bowls so they aren’t side by side.
Cats like to have their own spaces and resources. Having their food side by side makes them feel like they need to share.
3. Have a second bowl/fountain for water and make sure they are at least 4’ away from their food.
Cats instinctually avoid drinking near their food.
This behaviour is thought to stem from their wild ancestors, who would naturally eat away from their water source to prevent contamination. Some cats also don’t like smelling their food while drinking and having their food further away, keeps their water dish cleaner.
4. Add a separate litter box in a different space.
5. Try different toys and other enrichments to peak his interest. We all get bored of playing or watching with the same things over and over again.
So, change it up, add a new toy, rotate toys and offer enrichments that allow them to dig, forage, hide, climb, etc.
6. Get them a cat tree!
After making these changes and gradually adding to the toy repertoire, I’m happy to report that Marty is back to his usual self.
He’s playing, eating what he should, has night time cuddles with his person and sometimes, their human catches him and Molly just chilling out together!
