Dr. Gumley is the king of dad jokes. Here he is with our Vet Assistant, Cheyanne, who is holding the “pickle tree” she made for our holiday potluck today, and Dr. Gumley’s ingenious “pickle-toe” (mistletoe). He has been laughing about this all morning 🤣🤣🤣

It has been such a privilege and honour to work with The HolliBell Foundation this year!

11/29/2024

Let's talk HolliBell Foundation and spay and neuter.

What do we provide and how do we do it?

So our mission as most know is - Promoting the welfare of animals through the spaying and neutering of domestic pets, feral, or stray animals to better the community.

How do we accomplish this?

We first work at finding affordable options.

We then advertise those affordable options OR we send it to many caseworkers and organizations who have reached out to us to help with residents in their housing areas.

We create a waitlist of owners and requests (cats and dogs). Never ending ;)

We then work to fill spots we have available. It is almost like a puzzle, who can go to which spot based on many different factors! Good thing I like puzzles!!

Some options mean owners take their own pets to the clinic and we pay a portion of the cost. So once we have booked them into a "take your pet" spot, we pass the lists off to the clinics and receive a bill at the end of the day. **if someone cannot fulfill their appointment, we usually have a waitlist to replace them.

Some options mean owners also require transportation. This is achieved in a couple ways.
- Transport days like this past Tuesday (more to come on that one) where 33 cats were taken to the clinic with the help of several volunteers.
- Transport from home like one coming this Friday, which supports our most vulnerable.

Some times people just need a point in the right direction and don't need the sponsorship price.

We are working with some City councilors to help find more options, open more talks and really bring a focus to the fact that whether we are looking at normal cost, affordable costs or 100% sponsored spot, there simply are NOT enough spots for those waiting for spay and neuter for their pets.

We provide a kind word and supportive process to get pets spayed and neutered because there is no judgment. Just spay and neuter!

We work with some fabulous clinics. Our primary one Lanark Leeds & Grenville Spay Neuter Clinic has been with us since their day 1 and we are SO GRATEFUL for their support. *it can be tricky to work with so many moving parts.

We are also so grateful to Cedarview Animal Hospital and Valley Veterinary Clinic who have come on board to help offer some affordable days. ***ANY OTHER CLINIC out there interested in working with us - let's talk.

We were blessed with some days with the Ottawa Humane Society which helped clear some extra families off our waitlist.

But we need more.

But how do we pay for all this you ask?? (well maybe you didn't ask but we will tell you)

YOU

All our supporters who share, like, donate items or monetary gifts, who support our fundraisers, who spread our message. You are the reason we can do this.

Money is raised through events like our current
12 Days of Christmas auction - www.32auctions.com/12daysofchristmas24
Purdy Chocolate orders, garage sale, book sales, paint nights, trivia nights, cookies Easter hunt, walk a thon, all our bake sales and .... of course our Signature event Cupcakes for a Cause - stay tune... more coming for this delicious event (Feb 2025) :)

Of course as a registered Charity you can simply make a donation to receive a tax receipt **Good ideas this Holiday season ;) but we feel our group works extremely hard to earn all $$ coming in to support our mission.

We may be a small group, but we feel we are mighty!

With 618 families/individuals helped last year, I think we have proven that we are doing a great job.

Will we break this record amount in 2025? We shall see.

No Judgement. Just spay and neuter. Together we are a team!

*special thank you to our volunteers behind the scenes - Ashlee, Debbie, Heidi, Lyndsay, Lynn, Amanda, Carol-Lynne, Marg, Diane, Margot, Sandra, Louise, Sorina, Tania, Desiree.

Thank you from one of our kitties who was spayed on Tuesday Transport.

Today, on Remembrance Day, our clinic will be observing a moment of silence from 11:00am to 11:02am. Our doors will be closed and our phones off from 10:55am to 11:05am.

We ask any clients in our hospital at that time to join us in the solemn observance if they wish.

We remember and recognize those who have served and our currently serving, including the many working dogs that work alongside our soldiers and veterans.

We would also like to highlight the Canadian Veteran Service Dog Unit that provides support and care to veterans living with PTSD or physical injuries: https://cvsdu.ca/

Happy Halloween!

A few safety tips for today:

1. Remember to keep your pets in a separate, closed room during Trick-or-Treat hours so your pet cannot escape out the front door!

2. Keep candies and chocolate away from curious cats and dogs.

3. Keep in mind that costumes can be frightening for dogs and cats that experience fear and anxiety.

Have a safe an fun day!

Happy 15th Birthday to !!! We have had the privilege of being a part of Crusoe's care team over the past several years, and we wanted to share his super cool fundraiser for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in partnership with Cornell University. IVDD is a disease that affects 25% of dachshunds including Crusoe himself. He is using his platform to raise money towards ongoing research and clinic trials at the University of Cornell to improve treatment options for dogs affected by this disease.

Magnum has been found!!! ❤🐾

You may recall that we shared back in September that some of our dear clients lost their dog Magnum after a terrible car accident. After several weeks of being missing, we are so happy to share that Magnum has been found and reunited with his family!

We are very grateful to everyone that shared the initial post from the OPP and reached out to us and the family with sightings and information.

Here are some photos from today when Magnum came in for a visit!

As we reach the final day of Tech Week, we'd like to introduce you to the final two members of our tech and assistant team:

1. Mary - Mary is an RVT (and soon to be mama!) who joined us right out of college. She quickly learned the ropes at our hospital and has been a wonderful addition to our team. She currently works in team medicine with Dr. Julia Irwin and is quickly proving her skills in client education and patient care. Mary was one of the top students in her class and we are fortunate that she chose our hospital to work for!

2. Evalyn - Evalyn is a part-time Veterinary Assistant and currently enrolled in the Veterinary Technician Program at Algonquin College. She started with us in a co-op placement and became an important part of our Vet Assistant team. Evalyn is quick to help with literally any job at the hospital, and is one of the kindest, sweetest people you will ever meet.

THANK YOU, to our incredible technicians and assistants!!!

Day 4 of meet our Techs and Assistants!

First up is Sarah - our first technician ever hired at Cedarview, who has been a part of the team since the clinic opened in 2009! Sarah initially held the role of Head Technician before transitioning to managing our Rehabilitation and Reproduction departments. Sarah is a Certified Veterinary Dental Technician and Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinary Technician. She sees her own appointments for rehab therapy following consultation with one of our certified rehab veterinarians.
Next we have Cheyanne! Cheyanne is another one of our previous co-op placements that we hired because she is so awesome! She initially worked as a Vet Assistant in the Rehab department, and then transitioned to working in GP. Cheyanne can often be found snuggling with our hospitalized patients during her breaks, and comforting anxious and nervous patients. In terms of patient care, nothing fazes Cheyanne, and you can always count on her to jump in to help with a challenging situation.
Finally, today we introduce you to Melanie. Mel is our current Rehab Veterinary Assistant and works alongside Caitlin and Sarah in the Rehab department. She monitors our patients undergoing underwater treadmill therapy, and ensures that the treadmill is maintained and cleaned after each use. She helps to hold patients during therapy and assists with various administrative tasks in the Rehab department.

Today we'd like to introduce you to...

1. Katie! Katie is a technician that joined our team right in the middle of the pandemic. She quickly adapted to the unique challenges that time period posed in veterinary medicine, and somehow managed to keep maintain her infectious positivity throughout it all. Katie is the first of our technicians to undergo additional training in laparoscopic surgery and will also be pursuing training in canine reproduction in the new year!

2. Lili! We are looking forward to welcoming Lili back from maternity leave this month. Lili is our Feline Advocate and has a special interest in feline medicine and improving the care and experience of cats when they visit our hospital. She was instrumental in helping our clinic obtain it's certification as a Feline Friendly Practice, and will be working towards obtaining specialization in feline medicine.

3. Kristin! Kristin is another one of our technicians with training and experience in emergency medicine. She is an avid conference goer, and always has a pulse on the newest veterinary technologies. Outside of small animal medicine, Kristin is very involved in the equine community and regularly participates in horse shows and events. She is always smiling, and is always up for a laugh!

Meet our technicians and assistants, Part 2!

First up is Taylor, one of our amazing Vet Assistants. Taylor first started with us while she was in high school, and quickly proved herself an invaluable member of the team. In her role, Taylor assists our veterinarians and technicians in providing excellent patient care. She is extremely organized, and runs a tight ship in surgical pack/prep! She has used her talents to create highly detailed training manuals and guides for other vet assistants in the hospital!
Next, we have Lisa, who is one of our RVTs! Lisa works in team medicine with Dr. Sparks, and has completed advanced training in laparoscopic surgery. She manages our in-house lab machines, and is also very good at impromptu IT troubleshooting. Did we mention she is also an Excel wizard?!
Next, please meet Emma! Emma is an experienced technician that joined our team following a position in one of Ottawa’s emergency veterinary hospitals. She is remarkably calm and focused during an emergency, and very experienced at handling urgent cases. Emma cares for our inpatient pets, surgical cases and runs our lab. Our Story

Since opening its doors in the summer of 2009, Cedarview Animal Hospital has been providing a range of veterinary services and health care for Ottawa pet owners’ dog and cat companions.

We’re pet owners too, so we know how important your connection is with your pet. We emphasize prevention and early detection as well as healthy nutrition and exercise, and we are certified in sports medicine, rehabilitation and pain management.

Our clinic focuses exclusively on dogs and cats. We provide a variety of services throughout the life journey of dog and cat companion animals, from the tiniest kitten to the tallest Great Dane, from Siamese, Persians and tabbies to Chihuahuas, retrievers and mutts—and everything in between.

Our goal is to help all pet owners continue to enjoy the laughter and love that our dog and cat companions bring home to us.
