“You’re here because your dog is unsettled?”

Yesterday morning within minutes of getting up I noticed Massey was off. She was hiccuping and reverse sneezing. Frantically trying to eat ANYTHING within eyesight (sock, bookmark, plastic etc.). I put her outside and noticed the weird behaviour persisted.
I took my dog to the vets because she seemed “unsettled”. It turns out my instinct was right, my dog was bloating.

While, fortunately, this was a very minor case of gas bloat, bloat can turn fatal quickly. I’d like to use this to remind everyone to go over the signs of GDV, abdominal swelling is not always the first indicator.

This was a complete fluke, but here are some things you can do to prevent GDV, no exercise before or after eating, limit water after meals, use slow feeders.

Why feed in the crate? Avoids conflict, easier clean up, less movement pre/post ingestion to avoid bloat.
All dogs also get individual water as to avoid the spread of bacteria and illness.
