We are so honored!! Thanks to everyone who voted for us πŸ™β€οΈ.
We just hit the 5 year mark since starting our business and this means a lot! This is more of an appreciation post than anything.

We want to thank every person and dog that we have had a chance to work with this far. To the clients who leave reviews and recommend us on facebook or in person, that means the world to us!! Which helps our small business grow but also allows others to see us and trust us. It makes my day every single time, pushes me to keep going when I'm exhausted and burnt out from working 7days a week and makes me think maybe just maybe I'm doing something right 😜.

As the sole trainer, PR person, secretary and boarding staff / self proclaimed professional photographer (I'm better at some of those jobs than others) there are many that help us in the background from little things like reminding me to eat breakfast πŸ˜… to big things like helping me achieve my dream/ Mentors that have helped me along the way .I have a great support system that allows me to do what I do and call this my job.

At the beginning of starting our business I wrote down some goals 1-5 years and have checked all of them off the list. 2024 was such an amazing year for Kanata K9 but 2025 will be even bigger.

I will continue to further my education and just keep adding to the knowledge/ hands on I've accumulated one of the most difficult in dog training being "training the husband" πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

But seriously appreciate you πŸ™. If you read this you have probably played a more than you think important part of where I am today!

Chito- A 2.5 year old Malinos/ Dutch shepherd mix is here for a board and train.
Too much to list in terms of behavioral problems but I'll list the main ones here.

- Resource guarding ( both mom and sons arms were covered in scars and fresh wounds) COVERED. If he gets something or has a bone and you approach he would do some damage for sure.

- Car reactivity, he has actually busted out the front door and ran in front a car only to get hit pretty bad but luckily survived.

- Dragging the owner on walks not the average puller , very chaotic. So bad the owner hasn't needed to trim his nails more than a few times in his life. He grinds them down just from regular walks.

- Basically bulldozing through doors and crates, running into walls

- Has destroyed many couches and furniture, digging holes, stealing food

-No recall

- Extremely anxious in car

- Not socialized with dogs

After a very rough first few days of conflict and trying to drag me everywhere/ use his teeth to control. We now have more of an understanding of the role between us. Being as firm as I need to be but also a big softie in the right moments. We are at the halfway point in the bnt and am so happy with the transformation that we've already achieved and will continue to push and generalize . Giving Chito and his owner a new start with a much bigger world.

King- a little overdue. An American bully mix, he struggles with reactivity towards people, dogs and noises . When we first started King took the opportunity to muzzle punch me multiple times. One thing I appreciate is when a dog comes wearing a muzzle for safety, sign of a responsible owner when there is so much stigma around them. We have been working on building confidence in those areas and day by day we are getting closer to the goal.

Thankful, another year of doing what I love.

Cali, is here for a board and train. She is a roughly 2 year old standard poodle. We are at week three now. I'm just behind and too busy to post. She is a fearful girl who struggles with new people, especially males, other dogs that she doesn't know or when she is on leash. She was refusing to eat and was constantly trying to run away from me when I was around or she was on the leash for the first week.

She is a dog who is constantly going into flight as the first option so we have been utilizing a leash preventing the habit and building good ones. She would bark at every little noise in the home or if ppl/ dogs were passing the house.

We have also been cleaning up the communication so she can be guided through her fears making leash walking enjoyable again. We did Carp market that was busy with dogs yesterday and she did great! And have a test for her later this evening with some guests:) We have a busy last week planned for her.

Thankful

Teddy- A coonhound mix is a big barker like a big one and LOUD. His owner owns a store so there is a good amount of visitors everyday. Teddy can also be a big puller on leash and especially when he sees other dogs or people he wants to get to. Recall and overall obedience is also the goal, the last two visits have gone much better and no barking, so is the walking but he has still got a ton of un tapped potential.

Poncho- this boy started our program after there was a big change in the household, he was using his mouth on the owner when she was just trying to sit and relax for the night. It was becoming a battle and a nightly routine. He also had a hard time with guests coming over, he would jump all over them sometimes for 15 minutes at a time and he is a fairly big boy. He was constantly stimulated which made him go from a 1 to 10 real quick. Some history of being off-leash and disappearing , running up to dogs etc.

The owner wanted to change the habits since this was like a new beginning for him without inconsistencies of someone who wasn't on the same page. This boy and his owner have come so far! The other day was one of the first times he was able to start to settle with multiple visitors, one of them being one of his favorite people that he had a history of non stop jumping and over excitement towards.

I'm very proud of them both , it's so much nicer when you don't have to crate a dog when guests come over and have them listen to commands and directions. Yay Poncho.

Tuner has started our behavioural modification program. He is a young boarder collie living in the city which can cause obstacles since it's not really their element or breed purpose. He and his owner have done some great work with a good trainer at a facility.

They have since moved to a much busier area where he is quite reactive to vehicles (not uncommon for herding breeds) , reactive towards people and dogs. The downtown streets are very narrow so do not allow for much space unlike how most people can cross a street in their neighborhood to avoid these things.

We are off to a good start with making sure a few of the things we cover are 1. Specific breed fulfilment( not completely possible) unless there are places that offer herding nearby. 2. A confident leader who holds the dog accountable and is clear in their communication system. 3. A healthy relationship -Structure, rules , impulses and affection and at the correct/ appropriate time . Anyone who has dealt with reactivity knows how it can be to see a dog and remain calm and not anticipate a reaction. Just as much as the dog needs to learn to trust the process so does the human.

Afterall for the dog to not react even when another dog is trying to pull or lunge towards them there has to be trust that the owner is in control and can advocate for their space and be that "bring brother/sister" a younger sibling feels.

Board and train GUNNY- he's a young American bully who was attacked at a young age and changed the way he felt about dogs. He became extremely reactive and has not interacted with a dog since. At our consultation he was exploding at the reflection of himself in my truck numerous times. We have already done some private lessons and although it did get better the owners were having a hard time with him especially because of the busy area they live.

The goal is to have Gunny be able to control his emotions around dogs, owners be able to control him on walks but also get back to being able to play and interact with dogs in a positive manner. He is the type that needs more training and outlets than the average pooch. We have already made so much progress and we are now at one week today . Patience will be an important skill we teach and get him closer to the zen mindset instead of always being at level 10 and ready to roll.

Sasha is here for a short board and train! She is one of the more fearful dogs I've worked with. She pooped herself at dropoff due to stress. She has had issues with panicking over everything ever since moving to Ottawa from Montreal. She was a fearful pup from a young age but got to the point where her owners couldn't walk her for years. We had a lesson before this and she just darts for her house any chance she can , she is constantly in flight mode even going outside at her home with nothing even around her she constantly looks for exits. In the home it is the same deal if guests she doesn't know well come over.

She is a good dog, but she can't cope with anything strange , noises, new people or anything that causes her to think she needs to get to safety. My heart breaks for her but all we can do is move forward ,create a trust in me to help work her through things that scare her , predictability in everything we do, prepare her to deal with stress(life) and much more....

Looking forward to seeing her be her bravest self!

Timber- a husky/ shepherd pup who needs some help with potty training and the typical northern breed behavior ( being vocal, unruly, pulling, testing the owner with EVERYTHING) He has a ton of energy that has lately become reactivity on leash due to some leash greetings and now has become frustration. I love my northern breeds❀️ I love how when you are clear and give these guys boundaries, a purpose and proper exercise they thrive! πŸ›·

Whiskey is a larger Husky Mix- the goals were working on are reactivity towards other dogs(lunging, standing on hind legs ,etc) non stop barking at people who come into the house, nipping people, jumping and demand barking/ barking at 4am everyday to be let out.

His owners have a GSD so already have knowledge of training a dog which means whiskey is a lucky pup and will thrive in his new home :) He and his owners are doing so well with training and already have a different/improved dog than when we started!
