The dog people think I have vs. the dog I actually have 😂

Fun fact - I met my beautiful wife Betty when she hired me as her dog trainer over 25 years ago!!! ❤️ While I love all dog breeds and have had many dogs - big and small - our little Ginny has just been the sweetest addition to our family. I'm a lucky fellow!

Sometimes people assume that enrolling in a training program is more important for larger dogs, but as an experienced trainer, learning the language of our dogs is the secret of living a great life together!

Breed of the week...the German Shepherd! 🐾 I've had the pleasure of working with hundreds of these amazing dogs over the last 30 years as a dog trainer and they're one of my favourite breeds. A well-trained German Shepherd can excel at almost anything they're trained to do...from guide and service dogs, search and rescue, not to mention they're a wonderful, faithful and loyal family companion. Here are a couple of my buddies at our training facility in Ottawa's west end - you can see how focused they are!

Meet Kim! Kim is here to provide you with information, answer all of your questions, and schedule your dog’s evaluation and training appointments. She keeps everything here at Canadian Canine Training Academy running like a well-oiled machine! Isabelle is a 3 year old German Shepherd that was recently adopted from the Ottawa SPCA. She is extremely aggressive towards other dogs and strangers. She was abandoned by her previous owners and was hit by a car. The SPCA provided the medical treatment and surgery that left her with a steel plate in her hip. She has serious trust issues due to her previous experience and has learned to use her aggression as her first line of defense to anything she perceives as a threat. In doing so, has injured the 75 year old owner causing injury to her hand while lunging on the leash and had caused the lady to fall sustaining head injuries and a black eye. The prognosis looks very promising after todays first lesson.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our pack to yours!

Just a heads up.....we've had word from a local vet that ALL THREE EMERGENCY VETS IN OTTAWA ARE CLOSED DUE TO COVID! Pets are now being diverted to Kingston and Montreal for emergencies. Please do your best to be extra vigilant with keeping your pets safe including keeping chocolate and potential foreign objects out of reach.

Another dose of Sherlock tonight.

Remember little Sherlock from puppy class? He was 68 lbs at 18 weeks. He is now in Basic obedience at 10 months old and his owner says he is around 140 lbs. I think he is bigger than that.

Harley is out of control!

This is Harley. A very aggressive 16 month old Border Collie that the owner has lost control of. He started his first lesson tonight and is doing better already. Here are some comments from his owner. "He's hyper-reactive to other dogs, people, and bicycles, so it's impossible to take him on walks. He barks and jumps when we both leave the house (so something like separation anxiety). Being reactive to both dogs and people. Separation means he can't really be kenneled while we're away for, say, a week. We're very fond of him, but he's missing out on walks and trips and fun. (We tried individual sessions with another dog school for 2+ months; he learned some basic skills, but no real improvement with behavior problems.)" One thing he is going to need is a lot more exercise. The owners will be able to do that once we have control of his aggressive behaviour. I will follow up with some video of him around other dogs and people soon. Thanks for watching.
